Rating: Summary: One of my all time favorites Review: I discovered this title back in 1977 in a Library on Kodiak Island (Alaska). I was so delighted and entertained that I spent the whole day in the Coast Guard Base library so I could finish it before I had to depart back to the mainland. Since that time I've owned a number of copies. I usually end up rereading it every year of so. It's vintage Heinlein. I just wish some publisher would market an acid-free paper, hardbound edition so I wouldn't need to keep buying the soft cover editions
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: This was the first Heinlein I ever read, and in my opinion one of his best. This is definitely a Heinlein classic. Unlike his later books, this one is "tight" all the way through, with surprises and clever plot twists throughout. If you have never read Heinlein before, read "Door". No one can be called a true Heinlein fan if they haven't read this book
Rating: Summary: This is my #1 favorite book, I've reread it many times. Review: This is Heinlein at his best. A wonderful story filled with time travel, cats, images of the future and characters only found in a Heinlein book. Lots of fun
Rating: Summary: Heinlein's best book Review: This is my favorite Heinlein book. I believe I read it when I was 10. It taught me to love cats. The "Door" into summer is about love and happiness. There is a cat - Petronious Arbiter (PETE) who is convinced that even in the dead of winter that one door (to the outside) will lead him to summer where he can be safe and warm. You can tell the book is old (details); but it is a story of one man and his eventual success (ah -- love requited) after his "trials and tribulations" (Belle Darkin - a fiance and Miles - a supposed friend and business partner). If you like Robert's works - this is a Must Read!!!!!
Rating: Summary: A timeless classic! Review: "The Door into Summer" is Heinlein's best and one of my top favorites. I cannot remember how many times I have reread this book, even if not from page 1 till the end, but definitely chapters of it. Besides an amazing plot, the characters have depth and of course the cat with a mind of his own. Heinlein is definitely a great story teller when he sets his mind to it. Our hero's narration of his misfortunes and ultimate revenge and reward is simply delightful reading, with never a dull moment. There are even some sweet moments which are touching. One cannot help but wish the best for our hero and his cat. And this story remains one of the best about time travelling though "Replay" by Ken Grimwood comes a close second. The Door into Summer is simply timeless and will always remain in the front row of my favorite books.
Rating: Summary: The book that may have created the Personal Cumputer Review: I love this book! When I read below reviewers complaining about the dated technology... Hello! The book was writen a half a century before the technology existed. The mechanical drawing software, robo vacuums etc. They are here now but then...
Read the copyright date then enjoy the book as a prophesy of the late twentieth century. Great book!
Rating: Summary: good read Review: Very well written. The context and technology described was of course a little of date since it was written in the 50's, but it is literary art none the less.
Rating: Summary: The greatest SF book I've ever read. Review: This book is slow to begin, but once you get rolling -- get through the first chapter -- and it will hold you to the end. It is absolutely and utterly spellbinding. Best of all, in my opinion, is that there are little twists of the plot so that when you reach the end of the book, everything is tied up neatly and ended. There are no loose ends, no plot loops that are left unaddressed. It's really a masterful work.
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable Review: While the technology surrounding the robot invention is dated (mid-50's), and the subject of time travel is always a bit gimmicky, this is a fun book to read. I found the characters interesting, and the main character's plight especially so. I also thought the cat's role in the book was well-written and interesting. The idea of suspended animation is well done, and thankfully the subject of time-travel is not overdone. If the robot technology wasn't so lame, and the book was longer, it could have rated 4 stars.
Rating: Summary: Very dissapointing, extremely dated...LIMP Review: Heinlein cannot turn a phrase anywhere near as well as Frederic Brown or Cornell Woolrich, and I'm sorry folks, when you boil this SF caper down to its core that's what kind of book we're looking at. The author spends more time going into the minutia of legal contracts and stock options for a fictitious company than he does imparting a sense of wonder about the future! And the cat bit...was such a juvenile attempt at character motivation. There is some decent plotting and a couple of twists, but nothing to support a story of 160 pages. My advice: stay away.
