Rating: Summary: I found it very funny and I just couldn't put it down. Review: It was excellent. I found it refreshing to be able to root for the bad guys. They were evil, yet likable. I loved the humor.
Rating: Summary: Only flaw is no sequel thus far Review: Shakes head and cannot understand how anyone could give this book a negative review. This book is brilliant. It's an inversion of the heroes saving the world theme. It's a lampoon of fantasy cliches. It's also perhaps the only book I've read where you almost hear the dice roll on a table surrounded by d&d books, yet is enjoyable to read. It is in no way a final discussion of what is good or evil. It is a thoughtful comedic book; to say the characters aren't evil enough is ... a bit odd to me. Ms. Forward is a gifted writer with a great imagination. Her characters are wonderful, interesting, you are sad to see them go at the end of the book. I read it through without any pause; it seemed to lag a bit after about the midway point as someone mentioned previously. Curiously though, when reread in several sessions, it seemed to flow smoothly. I'd love to see a sequel to this book. "The Wheel of Endless, Interminable, Time" syndrome is nothing to be wished on any author or reader, regardless of sales, but this book absolutely screams for a sequel. This book was printed in 1995. Her other book "The Animist," which I also enjoyed greatly was published in 2001 or 2002. Unless she publishes under another name, her output doesn't seem to bode well for a sequel. Oh well. Ms. Forward if you happen to read this, please get a sequel out. I'd love to see our "heroes" and the White Tigers again. Fenwick must die a horrible, horrible death and be served up to Valerie with an apple in his mouth. Oh, and her new love Tesubar must be at her side. The dialogue in that romance must see print one day. But if it never happens, thanks for a great book anyway.
Rating: Summary: Plot line good, but contained offensive material Review: The plotline of this book was very enjoyable, and would infact, rate higher on my list if not for one detail. There is a rapescene in this book that's kind of graphic and it really wasn't necessary for it to be there. I was very much enjoying the book until that portion. All in all, the author lowered the value of this book by putting it there.
Rating: Summary: So Close Review: This book comes so close that it's almost painful. Eve Forward takes an excellent concept - that of having villains be protagonists - and almost manages to pull it off. The problem is that ultimately her villains aren't really villains; they're just good guys plying villainous trades. (Note that Samalander rescues a girl from being raped despite there being no benefit to him and considerable danger.) Even Valerie, a truly intriguing character, is not really a villain; she's simply a remnant of a race that heroic society had deemed villainous. If you want to see how a villain can be compellingly portrayed as a protagonist, I *strongly* recommend C. S. Friedman's Coldfire trilogy. One thing that Forward does well in this effort is portray the harmfullness of compelling people to meet arbitary standards of behaviour. Mizzamir is by far the most evil character in the book, and is an important warning of the dangers of enforced behavioural patterns. Free-will includes the ability to choose to be a jerk.
Rating: Summary: She tried hard Review: This book had a lot of potential. It was unsual in that villains were the protagonists. However, for this sort of thing to succeed, the villains must be both bad and sympathetic. Unfortunately, Forward succeeded only in the latter. I was expecting the main characters to break out into song about getting along at several points in the novel. The good guys (antagonists in the book) are more evil than the villains! The premise is good, that too much good destroys the world's balance and threatens to destroy everyone. However, the book does not live up to expectations.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Ever Review: This book is a classic, a must read for any fantasy fan with a well designed twist on the stereotypical fantasy/Dungons and Dragons line. Keep an eye open for it on ebay as you can get a good deal sometimes if you watch carefully.
Rating: Summary: Good/Bad it's all fun! Review: This book is by far one of the best I have read, I unbelievably rate it upthere with Eddings' Bellgaraid/Mallorean. Forward has put together a remarkable storyline that has a real cool look about being bad and the use of it. I love it!
