Rating: Summary: Well developed with some hanging outages. Review: I agree that this is one of his best books to date. A couple of questions to be explored. Why did the native Americans get sick when exposed to 20th century ills and not the bronze age Britons?A possible line: what replaced the "current island" in the 20th cent? Look forward to the next 2 in the series.
Rating: Summary: The best time travel and alternate history story ever. Review: As the story begins, Nantucket is thrown back to 1250 BC, the Bronze Age, from 1998 AD, the Information Age. The story then spirals into gripping subplots involving ambition, love, and survival. The characters are realistic. The writing is descriptive, expressive, and concise. "Island in the Sea of Time" is a great novel, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading fiction.
Rating: Summary: Best Stirling novel to date Review: This book is absolutely fantastic! I am a long-standing fan of Stirling's work, but this novel easily tops anything he has written to date. I was especially impressed with the characterizations of the Nantucketeers, being a native of that region, they really rang true. I will definitely be first in line to buy the sequel whenever it appears on the local shelves!
Rating: Summary: I don't like having to wait for the sequel! Review: There were a couple of paragraphs that I feel shouldn't have been included, so, I skimmed past them. They didn't make the rest of the story bad, and I'm surprised by how much weight the other reviewers gave to them. What I felt that material detracted from the story was easily made up by how great the rest of it is.
Rating: Summary: I found this book to answer a number of my childhood dreams Review: From the begining I could not stop reading this novel. The characters made you want to root for them thru the book. The first thing I did after finishing the book (2pm last night) was look up Stirling and the book on the net to find a sequel. he left it wide open for many further adventures. HURRY up with the rest of the story.
Rating: Summary: An absolutely great story Review: One of the best, most intelligently crafted novels I have read in a long time. I absolutely loved it. Nantucket was very well described, the characters were compelling, and the premise of the book enthralled me. I loved that a heroic gay black woman was a leading character--and seeing the Bronze Age through her very contemporary eyes was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed.
Rating: Summary: "Page-turner" is the best cliche to describe this novel! Review: I've been a fan of fantasy/sci fi since the mid seventies. This is the kind of novel a reader like myself hopes to find. There is the rough beginning: "Ooh... a rip in the space-time blah-blah-blah..." Once you've read the first few dozen pages, you find that you've forgotten your initial skeptism, and have at some point become engrossed in the characters, and their attempts to get over The Event. I stayed up later than I normally do, to read "...just one more chapter." I found myself getting up earlier than I needed to, to find out what was going to happen next. I was enchanted by the vivid details, and the well-defined characters, that Mr. Stirling described and developed so well. I was simultaneously eager to devour more of the book, and reluctant to finish it. I wanted more. If Mr. Stirling decides to continue the adventure he started in this novel (and believe me, brother, he left this sucker HANGING!), this is sure to become every bit! as much a classic as his Drakon series, and The General series.
Rating: Summary: Liked the story -- sex was too graphic for my tastes Review: The story was interesting, though I too could have used some attempt to explain why they ended up in the past. I thought he went into WAY too much deatil on the lesbian relationship. Can't strong female characters be straight as well? Then there was the jaguar sacrifice scene...
Rating: Summary: WOW WHERE IS THE SEQUEL???? ONE OF THE BEST Review: I felt that this was an excellant book. It was as thorough as history can be in representing the Bronze Age, clan structure and surrounding events. I felt the characters were enjoyable and well thought out. It was an all around wonderful experience reading this book. I am very picky in my reading selections and have reread this book twice.
Rating: Summary: Not what it could be Review: The jacket blurb was intriquing, the story had a lot of promise, *sigh* too bad it didn't live up to its potential. Leave out all the sex and the book would have been great. We all know that sex sells but what sells more is a great story. I would like to read the next books but I don't think I will bother to do so. I just wish I hadn't spent money on this one. REMEMBER!! The public library is a great place to visit!
