Summary: What happened in this book?
Review: This book taught me a valuable lesson; trust the general consensus of the other Reviewers. I purchased this book despite the fact that there were soooo many negative reviews. I figured I liked the 1st 2 books so much, that I would give this one a try. The first 1/2 of the book is interesting, but doesn't really pertain to the overall story. The second half of the book stunk, and made me wonder if there really was any point to the book. I hope someone can someday pick-up the Ringworld concept, and run with it. There are so many interesting story lines to follow, but this book did not do that. Oh well, onto the next book.

Summary: I thought it would never end
Review: Ringworld and Ringworld Engineers were each a triumph of science fiction, earning Larry Niven the awards and accolades of his peers and fans. Ringworld Throne was not even a whipping of the proverbial dead horse, as the Ringworld concept is still as fresh and untapped as it was over 20 years ago. It was simply a very bad book.

Characters from the first two books put in an almost secondary appearance, being overshadowed by poorly developed and disinteresting new characters. Plot lines were introduced and abandoned, while miniscule issues were examined in nauseating detail. While I thought the book would never end, it eventually did, leaving the "main" characters in the exact same situation the book started in. Niven apparantly didn't want to close any opportunities for cranking out additional books.

As Larry Niven has been a favorite author of mine since I was literally a child, I have eagerly awaited each and every new novel he has published. I therefore feel qualified to state that the quality of his writing has been on a steady downward spiral for about a decade, culminating with the latest "Destiny's Road", a truly abysmal book.

One more thing Larry: The incessant oversexing of every character has become tedious in the extreme. If you want to write eroticism, go ahead, but the ad nauseum "and then they had sex" plot developoments isn't winning any praise.

Summary: Avoid this book...
Review: I have enjoyed a number of Niven's books, but this one was essentially a waste of time that went nowhere. Particularly in the second half, at times the writing was so sketchy that i was not sure what he was trying to say!

Unless you are reading it to fill out your list of Niven's books, i suggest reading something else!

Summary: Satisfaction;Yes and no.
Review: While some might berate Mr. Niven's writing style and say that age has made him sloppy, after re-reading the entire back catalogue of the Ringworld Universe stories(!!!), I find that RWT is actually quit consistent with said Universe. Please remember that these stories encourage collaberative effort by other established authors, and (if you've every been to a SCI-FICON you'll know what I mean.) FANS. This creative/collaborative effect is even more evident when playing Chaosium's RINGWORLD ROLE PLAYING GAME (Oh gawd, not another RPG'er!) Well, that was the warm fuzzy, now for the cold prickly. However, as some other reviewers have previously noted, some promising plot elements were simply allowed to wither away and characters that I was just getting to know were never developed to my liking. In closing I would like to ask Mr. Niven to consider sanctioning other authors to "play god" on the Ringworld, much as he has done with the excellent MAN/KZIN WARS SERIES. LONG LIVE LOUIS WU!!!!

Summary: Try Weekly World News instead
Review: Niven exhausted his ideas on Ringworld a book and a half ago. What a shame, because the notion of a "planet" with 600 million times the surface of earth could have so much potential - you'd think the stories could never run dry.

What luck that my cat wizzed on my copy halfway through - I tossed it out and never looked back.

Summary: Total waste of time and $7
Review: What an awful book. The first two in the series were classics. They haven't gotten any worse with age. Even the science seems mostly realistic (the man created such a timeless future that 1970 ideas seem no less believable today).

While the first two aged well, the author hasn't. This book is 400 pages about interspecies sex and not much else. Save your money and buy the "Protector" which is a WONDERFUL book with a very silly cover.

Summary: Don't bother with this one...
Review: I had expected so much more of Larry Niven. Unfortunately, this book seemed like it wanted to reach a destination without caring about the ride. Yes, it did answer a couple of my questions, but he could have done that in about 10 pages.

I very quickly got sick of one-dimensional, eight-sylable-named, over-sexed, and boring charactors. This book is like junk-food; it's something to read, but it's going to leave you unsatisfied.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Disappointed
Review: This book seems to suffer from the same problem as the rest of Niven's more recent work--a lot of things happen in sequence and are more or less connected, but Niven forgot to make a *story* out of them. I found it disjointed and pointless.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Not up to par
Review: I reread the first two before I read this, I'm sure that helped some. But I was still quite disappointed with this. It was not up to the standards of the first two. I would also say that this is one of Niven's worst books. The first half of the book and the second half are only slightly related. I got tired of hearing about rishing all of the time and there were enough 8 syllable names of extra characters that I just didn't bother trying to keep track. If your a serious Niven fan then you may want to read it for curiousity. Otherwise, skip it.
