Rating: Summary: PLEASANT BUT AVERAGE Review: THE INVISIBLE RING is a nice adventure/love story expanding on Anne Bishop's BLACK JEWELS world. It's a fairly pleasant but average story about a slave, male, being used as a pleasure slave who 's journey it is to regain his honor and self respect, oh and yes find true love on the way.The story itself is fairly pedestrian but the world Ms. Bishop has created is anything but. It's a fascinating mixture of magic, caste social structure and firm if not unbreakable gender roles. The characters are interesting and well developed, the plot somewhat predictable but with enough twists and turns to make it interesting. This is a good story but not a great one. But so what. How many really great stories are there? It is not the caliber as her Tir Alainn books but still not bad. It's a relatively short, pleasant read and I certainly RECOMMEND it.
Rating: Summary: READ THIS FIRST Review: The Invisible Ring is a very good introduction book to Anne Bishop's trilogy. If you read the trilogy first, this book will be weird, in that the time Invisible Ring is set in is already past in the trilogy. If you read this book, read it either first, or after the first book. Don't read it after you've already finished the entire trilogy because then everything just seems out of order. The basic concepts that flow through all of her books--the jewels, the rings, the Queens, the Princes, etc.--are introduced in this book. The plot is slightly flatter than I would have hoped for, but compared to other books I've read overall, this one isn't bad, though not outstandingly good either. The trilogy, though, is a must read. Those three books I vouch for with five stars!
Rating: Summary: I enjoyed it but Review: The Invisible Ring is an enjoyable book and I advise anyone who enjoyed the Jewels trilogy to buy it. But the story is told through the eyes of the hero and I never got a chance to really know any of the other characters. And since the males in the first series had so much power, Jared seemed a bit of a weeny. My only serious problem was that I felt too much time was wasted on the bad guys. The same thing bothered me about the other Jewel books. I hope Ms. Bishop continues to write stories in this world she's created.
Rating: Summary: Not her best, but still a good read Review: This book can't compare to the Blood Jewels trilogy, but the author's writing is just as good and the world just as interesting. Don't expect the depth and complexity of the trilogy-- how can we expect the author to cram 3 books worth of plot development into 1-- but do look forward to spending more time among the Blood and reading a decent story. As a standalone book (reading this one before the trilogy), it seems fairly strong. I actually learned more about the typical male-female relations in this book than in the trilogy (where relations are anything but typical). You shouldn't have any trouble understanding what's going on if this is your first introduction to the Blood.
Rating: Summary: good follow-up to series or stand alone Review: This book is a nice follow-up to Bishop's first three books. I liked that Daemon made a couple of cameo appearances in this book. As I had already read the first three, I understood a lot more about what that character was about and about Bishop's style. This also helped me to understand the protagonists of this book. The plot was predictable, mostly because book 3 of the series hints at it. That's okay, though. I prefer a book that I can count on to take me where I expect the story to go. In comparison to the other three, this book discusses more "average" characters, while the series discussed characters of extraordinary ability. I found their lack of abilities and having to resort to their wits on occasion to be refreshing. I will be looking for future books by Anne Bishop and I hope she writes more books about Daemon's and Lucivar's adventures - pre-Janelle or post-Janelle. By the way, Anne Bishop's strength is her character development. They are all outstandingly written and now that I'm finished reading all the books, I am finding that I miss the characters.
Rating: Summary: Kinky... Review: This book is good, but the beginning is a little sexual, just a little! :) it wears off towards the end, but it was definetly made for a mature audience. the book is about this "pleasure" slave, and how he was made to do all this stuff to his former Queen "masters". Then he gets bought buy the infamous GrayLady, and he thinks his luck might be beginning to change. The book is about him and the Graylady going back to her Territory. Its a cute love story, and the fantasy is good too. there's some AWESOME plot twists that really got to me, but it worked out very much for the best. the ending was cute, and i can hardly wait to get my hands on the next three books in the series. aparently this one is the prequel. *shrugs* go figure, its good enough to stand on its own. but i will certainly check out the rest, this world that Anne Bishop created is interesting, and the Jewel heirarchy is very cool too.
Rating: Summary: First Time Bishop-er Review: This is the first Anne Bishop book that I've read, but I thought it was fabulous! One of the other reviewers made a comment calling her Eddings' daughter, but I feel that statement to be more of a compliment than anything else. These authors are rare. They involve un in a universe where the author actually likes his or her characters. We are immersed into a world where I really want to know Jared or Garion. The plot may have been a little thin, but I really enjoyed the read.
Rating: Summary: The Invisible Ring Review: This is the fourth book I've read by Anne Bishop, and I swear her writing keeps getting better. If you liked the Black Jewels trilogy, you'll enjoy this book. It introduces a lot of very memorable new characters, plus gives you some background on a few of the main characters from the trilogy. Overall, a fabulous read!
Rating: Summary: Falls short of the Black Jewels trilogy, but still good Review: This novel is set in the realms of the Blood, the world of Anne Bishop's phenomenal Black Jewels trilogy, and it takes place before the events of those books. While it does not live up to the standard set by the trilogy, it is a worthwhile read, and a welcome opportunity to return to a world that I fell in love with, as so many others did. If you have not read the Black Jewels trilogy, so much the better. Read this first. The trilogy paints a darker picture of the world, its characters are better developed and more intriguing, it is grander in scope, and its plot is not nearly so straightforward. Those of us who have read the trilogy will notice the step down in quality. But those of you who haven't will enjoy this book more since Bishop starts from a clean slate, and then you'll enjoy the step up when you get to the trilogy. Plus you'll have a nice introduction to the realms of the Blood when the events of the trilogy begin to unfold. As I said, for its faults, this is still a good book that I'd recommend to any fans of fantasy. "The Invisible Ring" gets three stars if you've already read the Black Jewels trilogy, and four stars if you have not.
Rating: Summary: she's a great writer, and blessed be, she tries hard on this Review: well, eddings daughter did it again. she may not be their biological daughter, but in all aspects she is, in the dark jewels, she discribes luthvian as polgara, but in this one belarr, and belar? come on, you're showing your roots. but just like david eddings, in this book it took you 100 pages just to clear your throat. I loved her previous series, and had high expectations, especially after reading the online preview. i'm not saying that i didn't like it, it had it's moments, but it could have been alot better. unfortunately, i think it was more editors than writer who changed this one to what it was. give it 100 pages, it might grab you again around page 90. may the darkness guide, protect and keep you
