Rating: Summary: A Fun Read Review: I really enjoyed this books. Its not nearly as complicated as a Jordan novel, lighter and faster paced, more like one of the Recluce novels. Lots of action (the entire book covers only 4 days) and an interesting magic system. If you like a magic system that's explained, you'll really like this book. While this book is a complete story, its obviously the first in a series, and I'm certainly looking forward to more!
Rating: Summary: Very enjoyable, despite some flaws. Review: It's not perfect (I had some problems with certain characters). But overall its a unique and, at many times, gripping story. I look forward to the next one in the series.
Rating: Summary: So So book, but I would pass on it. Review: I read it due to all of the previous comments, but I have to admit I was really disappointed. It started out fine, but I was bored by the middle and count not even finish it. Maybe I'm "too" used to George R. R. Martin, Stephen Donaldson and Robert Jordan, who have well developed characters and plots. This book was just too light and shallow for my preference.
Rating: Summary: Do not expect too much Review: this novel's storyline is exceptional. however, if you go into reading it, expecting a 5-star read that will leave you breathless, you will be sorely disappointed. Although the author has a certain flair and imagination that is great admired, there seems to be parts in the book where he could have spent more effort in to spin a more "solid" fantasy. Overall, The Runelords is an above average book. Buy the hardcover only if you have the spare cash. Else, be advised to wait eargerly for the paperback version.
Rating: Summary: A very competent, and somewhat refreshing, novel. Review: The idea behind a race of super-men who gained their powers in some sort of symbiotic vampiric fashion, was original in my eyes. At first glance I wondered if I was reading a testosterone induced "conan" book, but a certain voice regarding the morality and ethics present in the world comes to light about midway through. In fact, I was somewhat reminded of LE Modesitt Jr. or Orson Scott Card in how it deals with the "big" topics of "good" and "evil" and all the grey areas in between. My biggest complaint about this work is that it looks to be another first novel in an indeffinately long "cycle" of books, and I'll probably stop caring about it somwhere in the middle and start reading something that ENDS. Don't authors today realize that stories need an ending? I could be wrong, this might go 3-5 volumes, but I wouldn't be surprised if the demon that possesed Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind has grabbed hold of this David Farland as well. To all you authors out there, learn the timing of an ending. These sprawling works are nonsensical.
Rating: Summary: This is a good read.. Review: I'm glad I bought this. It had such good reviews, I figured I'd take a chance - on a whim. I really like the books of Jordan and Goodkind and this was similar in quality to their best. A very, very good book. I look forward to the next one in the series.
Rating: Summary: Great book-READ IT! Review: This book was one of the best fantasy novels I have read in a long time. I like the idea of endowments This is obviously an epic story, but it's not all spelled out what the hero is going to do. It's easy to understand and follow. It was very similar to Robert Jordan's "the wheel of time" series, only it doesn't have a glossary and long introduction. You get in the action the minute you start reading. My only question is: When is the next one going to come out?
Rating: Summary: This is really his first book Review: The Runelords is easily the best book I have ever read. There are a ridiculous amount of fantasy books out there and none of the many I've read can come close to "The Runelords." I couldn't predict half of the plot changes in this book. I have never read any book twice except for "The Runelords" which I read 4 times. You have to read this book if you have even thought about reading a fantasy book before.
Rating: Summary: Mr. Farland has given me a reason to read once more! Review: I must say that after having read this book I was actually crying. The world that Mr. Farland has created seems so real and alive. As I read the book I found myself wishing to visit the places that the characters visited. His story is woven in such rich detail that it is hard to believe that such a world did not exist as well as the people that live in his world. I found myself laughing, crying, and praying with each character time and time again. The sadness I felt for each person that died was genuine and hard to accept. The plot twists that I encountered provided much suprise, and anger, but each twist enhanced the story and filled in gaps without revealing too much. His writing style was very subtle but, at the same time, riveting. I look forward anxiously to the next installment! (Really this is a 6 star but...)
Rating: Summary: The best book I've read this year Review: I was able to get a preview addition and when I started to read I was unable to put it down and if I had not have to work I would have read it from cover to cover. The fight scenes were so vivid that I felt the character pains as they were my own. Good job David keep up the great work
