Rating: Summary: Anne McCaffrey's latest pern story Review: I thought this book helped explain alot of things - especially the reason for the noticeable difference in cultures between "Dragonsdawn" & "Dragonflight". I spoke to Anne herself and she has said that "MasterHarper of Pern" will be out in the states in January 1998. I believe it is to be a follow-on from "Dragonseye". Please note here that "Dragonseye" is called "Red Star Rising" in the UK, Australia & New Zealand! I nearly bought another copy via the web but luckily thought to read the review beforehand!
Rating: Summary: Each trip back paints a more detailed portriat of Pern Review: I have found myself captivated by the world of Pern since first reading the trilogy The Dragonriders of Pern. From the first flight against the thread to the last I have enjoyed the lives and history of Pern. I read this book while in England and it was published under the title of " Red Star Rising" , I loved reading about the early years of the weyrs. Anne MacCaffrey has a unique way of allowing you to step into the world of Pern and live in the weyrs, fly dragon back and fight the politics of Pern. It is another thread in the continuing tapestry of Pern and a thrilling ride
Rating: Summary: Diversity Review: Hey, GREAT BOOK but leave off with the griping about the way the dragon looks on the cover. What about allowing for healthy genetic variation in physical shape. There must be a large draconic gene pool. A short stocky dragon could be stronger, more manouverable, maybe suited to a lifestyle the long elegant dragons would find uncomfortable. Maybe a Miner Craft dragon. Michael Whelan is a great dragon artist, give the new person a chance too.
Rating: Summary: Love the book, hate the cover! Review: I thought the book was great, but Anne McCaffrey really,REALLYshould have stuck with the illustrator from The Dolphins Of Pern.(Thedragon on the cover looks like it has a bad toothache) But it had a good storyline and it was over too soon. I liked the way it filled in the gaps of the history of Pern. It even explains how AIVAS was lost with the other high tech stuff. One of the best of Anne McCaffrey's works so far. I'm waiting for the next in the series!
Rating: Summary: Worth reading to Fans but not as stirring as Dragonsdawn etc Review: `Dragonseye` happens chronologically after `Dragonsdawn` and`First Fall` but before the `Dragonriders of Pern` trilogy andadroitly fills in more of the timeline and answers more of the `how did they lose this` type questions. I have particularly enjoyed the way that all of the books overlap and drop hints about adjacent stories or characters and about events past and future. As is common in many of Ms. M's books we have an oppressed young woman rising if not to heroism at least to independence and I would like to read more of the story of Green rider Debera and her artist love Iantine. Having read all of the other stories first this one's storyline was somewhat predictable but as usual the characters are very realistic and interesting. As one of the other reviews mentions I don't understand the reference at the end of Chapter 4 about the AIVAS having turned itself off. It was left behind during the Second Crossing but was apparently on "standby" pending the clearing of the solar panels and ready to complete work on its primary objective in `All the Weyrs`. Dragonseye` is definately worth reading to any PERN` addict but I would recommend reading the other books first. I would also recommend that they be read in the order in which they are listed in the cover except that I would read `The Renegades of Pern` before `All the Weyrs of Pern` and I would read `The Dolphins of Pern` before `The Chronicles of Pern: First Fall`. This order seemed to maximize the element of discovery for me.
Rating: Summary: Excellent PreQuel for The Pern Series Review: I enjoyed this work as I have all of this authorsworks in the Pern series. They are fighting with how to educate theirchildren, and how to pass down history of this planet. They also are looking for a more accurate way to predict the next Fall, that their descendents will have to fight and live through. It relates well to the other books in the series.
Rating: Summary: Loved the book but had it under another title Review: I loved this the first and second time I read it. I had itunder the title "Red Star Rising" I was disappointed as Ithought I had found another new book in the series. Where possible it might be best to list retitles somewhere. I thought the summary was familiar but didn't have access to the book to check.
Rating: Summary: Horrible Cover!!!!!!! (Can I rate the book an 11?) Review: This is the best Pern book yet! The charictorization isincredible! (Yes, I do have my own opinion and I know it.) It reallyfilled in a blank spot in Pern history. I CAN'T WAIT 'TILL THE NEXT PERN BOOK!!!!
Rating: Summary: The Dragonlady returns! Review: I eagerly awaited a chance to get my paws on thisbook. I have always been a fan of Anne's and thisbook is no exception. With her usual easy, taletelling style, Anne takes you back to the days before there were reliable ways of telling a Pass, and details the ideas and people it took to design and install the Star Stones any Pern reader recognizes. Besides clearing up this mystery for me, she delightfully fills in some of the many details of daily life in Hold, Hall, and Weyr. Though the cover was not up to the usual style, the pages inside more than made up for that minor disappointment. This book again showed me the wonderful style of a true author.
Rating: Summary: It was a disgrace to the writing ability of Anne McCaffery Review: I have read almost every one of Anne McCaffery's books and haveloved all of them very much, but I really really dislikedDragonseye. It was one of the worst books I have ever read. It was well written and all that, but it felt like nothing happened. If you liked Anne McCaffery's other books like I did, you will probably agree with me.
