Rating: Summary: Where are the Chararcters? Review: One dimensional characters, chatting away in contemporary cynical Nort-American Humor. What is the point of this book? Too bad I can't give it zero stars.
Rating: Summary: Average Review: I agree with another reviewer above that Eddings is hardly an 'A' list author. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the series, especially the Belgariad, but my criticisms are listed below. The dialogue in his books is terrible, why does everybody have to say 'dear' in just about sentence, and why are the characters all the same? Why does belgarath always say "One of these days I must sit down and have a long chat with . . . ." Why do they only appear to be able to use sorcery in certain situations, (for instance "that doesn't work on Grolims" from Demon lord of Karanda) Why not?
Rating: Summary: More more more! Review: READ THE BELGARIAD FIRST! Your enjoyment of these books will be greatly enhanced if you do. This series took me back with my old friends that I had come to know and love. Some say that Eddings stretches out his plot over too many books, but when you get attached to the characters like you will in this series, you could read on and on and on...... the more, the better. These characters have become family to me, and I never tire of watching their ups and downs. These books will hook you and not let you go. Do yourself a favor, go ahead and buy them ALL now. You'll finish them entirely too fast to want to wait for the next one!
Rating: Summary: A great storyteller tells another great story Review: I would never place David Eddings high on my list of literary classic authors. Although his characters are well-defined, they are superficial and two-dimensional. Like an earlier reviewer, I have a problem with the fact that all his characters have exactly the same sense of humour and the same style of speech. The impression this gives is that the writing is fundamentally naive. That being said, however, I don't read David Eddings' books in order to be intellectually stimulated. He works the stories well, and makes it interesting and fun to read, even with predictable plots. He is a master storyteller and provides book after book of compelling, emotional and sometimes hilarious adventure. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending it to someone as a form of the storyteller's art where reading is pure enjoyment. Just don't expect any great level of sophistication!
Rating: Summary: a really, really good book Review: this is one of the best books i have ever read. i think it is much better if you read the belgariad first. you would be really lost if you dont. i would recomend this book to anyone that is interested in fantasy and magic.
Rating: Summary: Wahoo! Review: This is a fantastic book that reunites us with some of our most beloved friends. The grand storyline of the Belgariad is continued in this, the first book of the Mallorean. Fans and newbies alike will treasure the time spent in the world of Eddings creation
Rating: Summary: An engrossing read Review: I found the prologue so confusing, I almost put the book aside, but I'm glad I didn't! Eddings tends to be a little repetitive with his descriptions, and all his characters have the same brand of humour, but it still comes across well. The entire series is great, one of those ones you pick up and just don't put it down 'till you've raged through all five books. While slightly weak in spots, I'd still recommend it fairly highly.
Rating: Summary: wonderfully written!!! Review: i picked this book up and was at once taken to a different place, with sorcery and prophecy. i love the way Ce'Nedra, Polgara, and Liselle can deflate any of the men's egos at any given time! i liked this book so much that i went out and bought the rest of the series, and have read the Mallorean at least three times by now...and i still find it to be good reading. highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: Great book, Great sequel Review: There are some people who say this series is just re-hash, but I prefer to call it comfterbale, it's less a sequal than a continuance, the plot may be a little familiar but the story's different. a great read.
Rating: Summary: its nice that theres another series but its all the same Review: it is too much like the old series, david eddings could have been a little more creative instead of a dark vs. light thing again. but this series does have some good parts in it and i always love reading books by david eddings.
