Rating: Summary: Not worth the wait Review: A great disappointment compared to the last four books. Seem to me T.G. has spent more time on the marketing plan for his books than on putting thought into writing them. It's a great story and deserves better.
Rating: Summary: BRILLIANT!!! Review: This book is, perhaps, the best of the series. Yes, it was a departure from the author's usual telling. I enjoyed this story forthe political intrigue offered, the fact that the story remained focused primarily on exposing one culture rather than the pursuits of war and strife and the joining of nations. Yet, Anderith IS one object of consolidation and the story line remains true to the objective. Yes, the story is absent of conquest and ballyhoo. We, as readers, are raised (if you allow it) from the baser campaigns of war and conflict to a more intellectual pursuit of the machinations of man and his intent to bring dominion over all he surveys. I especially relished in that aspect of the story where magic (and the use of magic) was not prevalent. The fact that the story revolves around magic (and the saving of magic) rather than the wielding of magic was, in a word, refreshing. It brings us closer to the real conflict in the story: life as we know it. Imagine your life, how dependent you are on the fabric of things only to have it ripped asunder. Consider, too, that there are those among you who would willingly invite its demise. What, then, would be the essense of your life? For example, call the internet magic, what would your life be like without it? Did anyone notice that Richard was less consumed with his magic and lack of ability to use it and followed more the guidance of his heart to achieve what he must? I think the chap is coming into his own. This was a powerful story as told. The carrot at the end of the stick was mighty tasty. I can't wait for the next installment. It will be told as only Goodkind can tell it, with lavish detail and scope, it will be - without question - brilliant and thrilling. If the storyline remains true with the ending, I look forward to Richard's homecoming, arriving full circle where this story started. Figure, too, the reunion of most of the central characters in this place, a place where the end of this compelling saga will be launched in an all-out crushing conclusion that will leave us all in awe of the powerful way this story was told. And do you know what? I hope it takes four more books to end. Thank you, Terry Goodkind, for a masterful tale.
Rating: Summary: Where is the magic??? Review: I was waiting so eagerly, and it is such an anticlimax!I love high fantasy, all the paraphernalia of the fight between the Light and the Dark, where are they? It seems to me that although the story revolves around magic/magical beings, it only treats them marginally. Where is the inventiveness of the first two books, I don't want Richard to turn into Rand, who performs one feat of magic per book, and the rest of the time is busy suffering introverted martyrdom for humanity. Please may I have some heroic deeds, even if accidental, victories over the evil, the satisfaction of the hero doing a good job, teaching the Dark a few lessons? Not some long-drawn out sociologic parables, which although perhaps interesting, should only form a marginal part of a story like that!!! It was such a long way coming to the crucial point of Richard defeating the chimes, with no spellbinding magical encounters on the way, and the deed itself so short and unsatisfactory. The chimes were not even as good as skrin, as far as I am concerned!I know I will look forward to the sixth part, but with anxiety.
Rating: Summary: GREAT BOOK! Goodkind really outdid hinself this time! Review: What a great book. It is second in the series only to the first, Wizard's First Rule. I do not want to spoil the series, but i would recommend you read all of the books and in order. The Soul of the Fire is a great ending to the series, maybe. The book had a rather slow beginning, but being himself, Goodkind could not have a had a better ending! This book deserved the four stars I give it!
Rating: Summary: Awesome!!!! I loved this book!!! Review: Some of these people griping are starting to piss me off! I loved this book, and i loved reading about the land of Anderith. The chimes creeped me out. I thought the ending was great. Sort of a cliffhanger but it makes me want the next installment in the series. Cant wait till the next book. I want Richard to get jagang so bad. I love Jagang as a bad guy. But his time is coming. HEHEHEHEH!!!! I cant wait for Richard to pull the sword of truth and kill Jagang. We will have to see what happens. Keep up the excellent work Mr. Goodkind.
Rating: Summary: Dull and Dry Review: 140 dollars for a leather bound edition?! I never thought this book was THAT good, it was quite dull, well, considering how it was written.
Rating: Summary: This is a Great Continuation of the Series! Review: After reading the Temple of the Winds, I thought the series was over and done with. I was pleasantly surprised to find yet another book has been written. This book is great and it kept me reading for hours at a time!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing versus the previous volumes in the series. Review: I found this disappointing versus the previous books in the series. It starts well, but bogs down in the middle with too much talk, some of which is even repetitive. The end ties up lots of things in just a few pages. There was plenty of potential for spending less time meandering in the middle and using that time to add drama and color to the end.
Rating: Summary: Unspectacular installation in an excellent series Review: I was very disappointed by this novel. The first and second books were great, in fact some of the finest fantasy that I have read. The next two books were mediocre; and, to put it mildly, the current one is a disaster. It is incredibly boring!! The plot is lame and very linear, whatever happened to that good old "ten different sub-plots running along in parallel" formula? It worked so well in the beginning! I would not even recommend this novel to die-hard Richard fans because it is such a letdown =(
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Terry--listen, I know the moneys good, but don't do this! Finish this series with some dignity--go out on top--you can start a new series--PLEASE don't pull a Jordan and make this a never-ending series of disappointing books. The one thing I could count on you for was that each book would explore and resolve the problem by end of book. It would be self-contained and not leave you hanging. Now, admittedly, you solved the chimes problem, but really, what kind of a problem was that? The real problem was Jagang--how long are you going to drag that out?? This could have been a great book--instead, I couldn't believe how CONTRIVED the whole thing was. You could see the setups and foreshadowing a mile away. And where there were opportunities to have fun things happen, fights, magic, some *ACTION* --> Nothing happened. In fact, if the book I bought didn't have a cover from TOR on it, I would have said some Internet stooge was passing around a phony Goodkind book. What is one of the main things (besides great characters) that has made this book so much fun?? THE MAGICAL POWERS AND EVENTS--so here's an idea--let's write a book that has virtually no magic in it--will fill it up instead with a boring soap opera about characters nobody cares about--no one, Haken or Ander, evoked any sympathy or compassion, or interest--and come on, a VOTE?? how stupid is that? And then Richard loses, and decides to abandon the whole city--even the Children, who don't understand or know any better. This was like the Bizarro World version of the Sword of Truth!
