Rating: Summary: Cool! Review: I really liked this book, and it was a GREAT sequal to Daughter of the Forest. However, I have one and only one complaint. Liadan was too perfect. In the next book, Child of the Prophecy, Fianne makes mistakes. She doesn't always turn the right way. Liadan always does. Her only mistake is in saving Evan, the smith, and that she couldn't prevent. I now know Dog, Snake, Spider, and Rat very well and must admit that they steal the show from Liadan. I LOVE them!
Rating: Summary: Beautiful continuation Review: While this was for the most part an exceptional book, it did drag in places. The writing was smooth and melodic, easily a match for what was found in _Daughter of the Forest_, but in places the story seemed to lose its forward momentum. This book lacked the urgency that was such a part of _Daughter_, almost dragging you from page to page. Instead _Son_ was a book that seemed to be containing the parts of at least two shorter novels, one for Liadan, and one for the events at Sevenwaters. The bridges between the two seemed to drift and twist. The main story between Liadan and Bran was beautifully told, and that story would have made a rich novel all on its own. This book suffered, as many middle books of trilogies do, by trying to set the stage for the next novel in addition to telling its own story. If you have read and enjoyed _Daughter_ then this is definately a book that you should read. If you haven't I would recomend you read _Daughter_ first as many of the events in this novel presume a knowledge by the reader of the the previous book.
Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD!! Review: i am 13 years of age and this book inspired me to become a fantasy writer!!! I have a long way to go but this is truley beautifuly woven with excitement, torment and love.! i highly reccommend this book for yearning readers!!!
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: This book was probably the most descriptive I've ever read. It made me feel as if I was almost into the book. It's writer is obviously very talented. It kept the pages turning.
Rating: Summary: A Great Sequel Review: After reading the previous book, i was very excited to read the next book. I loved the first one and hoped the next one would be just as appealing. I did not expect that SON OF THE SHADOWS would be even better than i expected. The villians in this book were not as open in the first. I did not even suspect them being the "bad guy" until they turned on Liadan. Liadan and Bran's love was very intense. I loved this book and i can't wait to read the next one!
Rating: Summary: The Best Book in the Trilogy! Review: Son of the Shadows is the second book in the Sevenwaters Trilogy and after reading all of them, I decided, though a hard choice, that this was my favourite. The book is about a young woman called Liadan and her family in Sevenwaters. Life is good for her as a healer like her mother. That is until a horrifying discovery which leads the family into terror and suspicion. Liadan is kidnapped and her world is turned upside down. She comes into the hands of the Painted Man and his clan, feared throughout the lands. The whole book is full of surprises and intrigue, romance and adventure and I absoulutely loved it! I recommend it to any fantasy lover!
Rating: Summary: Back to Sevenwaters Review: With this novel, Juliet Marillier returns to the Celtic world of her first novel, the fantastic _Daughter of the Forest_, about eighteen years later. Sorcha and Hugh have lived happily together, and have three children, Niamh, Sean, and Liadan. Niamh is a restless beauty with a case of wanderlust; Sean is a future leader growing up in his uncle Liam's mold; and Liadan is her mother's successor, a storyteller and healer. But Liadan is not Sorcha; having grown up in a loving environment, Liadan is well-aware of her own worth, and acts with more confidence and defiance than Sorcha did. In some ways I like Liadan better; in some ways I prefer Sorcha. But both are ever engaging. The "son of the shadows" of the title is Ciaran, a young druid who falls in star-crossed love with Niamh. (Now, those of you who have read _Daughter of the Forest_ know there is a problem with this!) Ciaran strikes off on his own after Niamh is forbidden to him; he is torn between love and honor, and between the disciplined magic of the druids and the darker sorcery inherited from his mother. I am very interested in what happens to him, and to Niamh; I just hope Marillier deals with them in book three, as they are almost peripheral to this book, despite the title. This is Liadan's story. Liadan thinks she knows exactly what kind of life lies before her, until she falls in love with the leader of an outlaw band. She spends the rest of the book using magic, wit, and courage to try and keep her family and her lover from killing one another--a Herculanean task--while also rebelling against the Fair Folk's desire to use her as a pawn in their plots. This is the biggest difference between Sorcha and Liadan; Liadan never seems to obey anyone if she can help it. Sorcha was more willing to submit to the Fair Folk's plans. _Son of the Shadows_ is a well-written and emotionally engaging story. It feels bloodier and less magical than _Daughter_, but it's pretty good anyway, and even as it ends, we feel the storms brewing that will need to be dealt with in _Child of the Prophecy_. This story ain't pver yet, not by a long shot. I eagerly await the third book, and the final resolution to all this turmoil.
Rating: Summary: satisfying, but not as good as the first Review: I enjoyed this book very much, it had an intriuging plot and great characters, but it just didn't have the magic and truth of the first book. I thought that the good and evil in the magic were not very well defined. The Ones who were the truth of the first book were disregarded and disobeyed in this book. This seemed somewhat contradictory. Also, this book seemed more like a romance novel, more carnal and less ethereal than the first, although they both have a very real, human feel that I do like. Besides this I found the book facinating, I loved the mystery and drama of the story. I enjoyed seeing how the characters of the first book kept their distict personalities as they grew into adulthood.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ!!! Review: I randomly picked up The Daughter of the Forest at the book store and was intrigued, as soon as I finished it, I ran to the store to buy this one. I was delighted to find it to be even better than the first! It is so captivating and Liadan is the perfect defiant-woman character. The Son of the Shadows has just the right recipe for a great novel, with just enough fantasy elements to make believable and plenty of well-devoted romance that makes you wich you were in Ireland with the characters. Marillier is an awesome writer that can weave a perfect story that makes you laugh and cry. A must read for anyone!!!!! (...)
Rating: Summary: Even better than the first Review: Juliet Marillier has improved her writing and still delivered a tight, character-driven tale. I found this book more of a page-turner than the last, with fewer awkward moments. While she could have given the supporting characters more depth, it didn't really detract. It was also a delight that she didn't forget the last book's loose ends. This book left me searching for the final book in the trilogy, and disappointed that it has been delayed.
