Rating: Summary: One of the Best! Review: I read this book about 25 years ago. I never forgot the world that Mary Stewart created for me. Like "The Mists of Avalon," she puts her players into real life, not just fantasy! Loved it.
Rating: Summary: The Coming of the Great Adviser Review: Mary Stewart makes Merlin's life story in the book the Crystal caves. The book starts with a quite boy named Merlin. Merlin liked to listen in on conversations, and sneak around the castle. But because his father was unknown he was called the dark prince. Eventually Merlin developed a power to see the future, but he does not no how to control it not only does he not no how to control it he cant quit be shore who to tell. This book is about Merlin and how he becomes a magician. I would recommend this book to high schoolars or older because of its ideas and length. This was a great book because you never knew what was going to happen next.
Rating: Summary: Believable Camelot Review: I read this triogy of Merlin's Camelot about 20 years ago and it remains 3 of the top 10 books I have ever read. We have often read and seen accounts on TV of life in Camelot but have seldom read anything about Merlin's life as a boy or his humble beginnings in the realm of King Arthur and this book transports the reader to early life in England and the trials of placing a true King on the throne of England. I will read these books again and again throughout my life and enjoy them like I'm reading them for the first time..highly recommended!!!
Rating: Summary: The Empress of Story-telling and Description Review: This trilogy (and Mary Stewart's other Arthurian books)have to be the most exquisite, compelling, and utterly believable recreation of Arthurian times ever written. One is gripped by the story and quality of writing from the first page of the first book, right through to the very last word of all. No one writes a better description than this author, and in The Crystal Cave I defy anyone to find anything more spine-chillingly awesome than the chapters dealing with the young Merlin's discovery of the terrible rituals on the island. This is writing of rare quality, and story-telling of breathtaking brilliance. I cannot recommend these books enough. To read them is to leave the present day far behind, become a different person, and return to a world that was wild, magical, bloody, and filled with wonder.
Rating: Summary: Perfect Review: Once I read this trilogy I could no longer read any other books about Merlin or King Arthur. For me, Mary Stewart's version is now 'The Truth', and all others seem cheap (and incorrect!) imitations. I have read this trilogy about 14 times, and just reviewing it here makes me want to go and start it again. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Rating: Summary: A good book, NOT a masterpiece Review: For over a year now I have been reading arthurian novels. some better then others. I was startled to see a book with such good rating being as it is that my favorit book in the subject has four stars and a half, and so naturally I bought this book. I must admit it is very fluentlly written and has a nice concept. Yet there is a very big distance from that to a five star book, yes this is a nice book, but no it is not a book that you feel is calling you whenever you don't read it and no, not a book you feel very sorry and reluctant to finish. The beginig of the book drags on and the author tends to get swept up in discriptions. I would however like to say it is a nice book to read if you have some spare time.
Rating: Summary: fascinated Review: The Chinese translated Crystal Cave was put on my shelf for over 10 years. Accidentially I picked it up and then I couldn't stop finished reading it. Mary gave Merlin a more humane desciption. And her ancient British world attracts me.
Rating: Summary: outstanding read! Review: I just discovered that the saga continues in a fourth book, and it's already on my wishlist.
Rating: Summary: Interesting Spin On An Ancient Legend Review: I bought the trilogy never having read anything on the Arthurian legend. These three books are an excellent attempt at recreating the story of Merlin and Arthur. Stewart uses great detail and adds her own twist to the legend. And for those real buffs of ancient lore, Stewart does not fail to mention certain parts of the tale that she has left out or altered; she even explains her reasons for doing so. These are a great read for anyone interested in the legend of Merlin/Arthur.
Rating: Summary: One of my all time favorites Review: I read this trilogy about 20 years ago and loved it. It was such a pleasure spending time in this magical world. I only wish there were more like it out there. Now I am buying it as a great gift for older kids who are enjoying the Harry Potter books.
