Rating: Summary: powerful debut Review: To be blunt, Firethorn is an amazing book. A assembly of well drawn characters, in a tapestry of a whole society, religion, customs, and a dramatic language that as a reader I came to feel and love. Wonderful descriptions: weather, weapons, lore, tourneys, camp life.
And Firethorn herself--well, what a creation she is! A red haired girl in a land where she stands out, independent and yet willing to be utterly vulnerable, kind yet sharp-tongued, committed and passionate, and yet she is yet only a teenager.
I doubt fiction has ever seen her like.
Rating: Summary: Smut-tastic Review: To be perfectly honest I never finished the book because the sexual references became so annoying in their frequency. The great majority of the time these references were neither necessary or enriching. To me they were nothing more than an annoyance.
Rating: Summary: Definitely worth the read! Review: When I first started Firethorn, I strongly doubted the five-starred reviews I came across on the internet. However, now that I have finished it, I have jumped on the bandwagon! This is a marvellous work of fantasy. Micklem weaves an intricate plot of lust, betrayal, revenge and love that I found so engrossing that the book stayed with me even when I wasn't reading it. I definitely recommend it!
