Rating: Summary: Awesome characters and story. Berek Lives again! Review: The characters, with their quirks and folklore
come alive to Thomas, as he is renewed in a new
world of magic and uncontrollable power. He is led to beleive (or not) that he is the re-
incarnation of a folklore hero who tried to destroy evil with the use of the ultimate power
in this new world. White Gold! He still wears his
white gold wedding ring from our world. I don't want to give away his plight or reason for being.
Read the Story! And the next Five books!
Rating: Summary: A masterfully crafted story with genuine power. Review: More than ten years ago, I picked up a copy of Lord Foul's Bane in a bookstore because I was drawn to the cover art. It took only a few pages before I was transported to The Land in the same mysterious fashion as Thomas Covenant. In fact, I wasn't reading the book so much as it was telling me the story. I recently re-read the novel, and I still believe it will take its place among the classics of Fantasy. Stephen Donaldson has created an enthralling trap for readers: the main character is the epitomy of the "anti-hero" and the reader spends most of the time despising him and his actions. However, the lush descriptions of the landscape, the vivid characterizations and the often-times beguiling language make up for the somewhat predictable plot and keep readers locked inside the story. As for comparisons to Tolkien--yes, there is a ring involved--but Bilbo and Frodo were nothing like Thomas Covenant. It's probably best that all main characters are a little more redeeming in their actions. Still, the storytelling is so alluring, that even when I wasn't actually reading it, I found myself thinking about it and wanting to be back within the pages. This is a wonderful way to launch into a masterful epic of fantasy
Rating: Summary: Prepare to lose yourself. Review: Sure, there will always be comparisons to Tolkien's books, but be assured that this series is one of the most moving, gut-wrenching and emotionally involving series to have ever come out of the genre. Donalson's characters are well developed and his style of writing brings you, the reader, right into the world. I swear, for weeks (months?) after reading these books I thought the Land actually existed. If you are a Fantasy buff, this is REQUIRED reading! Not since Dune or The Lord of the Rings have I ever been moved to tears, genuine tears, by a simple book. This series is extraordinary and will go down in history as one of the greats
Rating: Summary: Read it when published 13 years ago!The Un-believer Lives!!! Review: Simply perusing the shelves of Amazon, I ran across this book and was flooded with the memories of the Land. Wow!!! If you know anything about SF/Fantasy, or want to know more read this book.
Stephen Donaldson, Frank Herbert and Tolkein are all belong to the same club. I'm sure I could mention more, but this book exceeds all expectations
Rating: Summary: First-class science fiction fantasy Review: Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant is
the only books I've read THREE times.
A fantastic story, with great depth.
If you like Tolkein, this is a must-read
Rating: Summary: Stone and Sea! Review: Richly flavored, sweet, fine wine prose.
Parodoxical emotional distortions. love, hate,
joy, profound despair.
Pages fly through your fingers, time has no meaning.
From the joyus wonders of Amdelaine,
to the agony of Seareach and the plite of the beloved giants. .
From the Circle of Lords at Revelstone to the
Lair of Drool Rockworm.
Deprived of reality, you laugh, you cry, you go willingly, as Donaldson drags your soul deeper and deeper into the Land.
No book in the series is quite like the other.
your saddened by the passing of each book, as you would by that of a dear friend.
When the series ends... deep depression of a few
weeks is followed by a need which will not be denied. In despair, you will toss all other books aside.
It will not be of your own volition.
You will pick up the first book... again
*Warning*
You MUST get all six.
Rating: Summary: Tolkien-like in its implication to fantasy Review: This book is a marvel of ingenuity and is probably the best anti-hero story of all. Jordan? Where do you think the Aiels come from (Bloodguards?)? I compare this work with Elric and company...Very entertaining and will impact on the writing in the future (as is evident in Goodkind's harsh but charismatic story). And there is talk of a third and final series: The final chronicle of Thomas Convenant. I can't wai
Rating: Summary: I live my life by these books!! Review: On numerous occasions I have tried to explain to my friends the story of Thomas Covenant and halfway through I give up because I cant articulate all the nuances, the details, and the feelings that these books have. There are no other books that I have read that can make my heart rejoice while at the same time makes it break. No other novels mix joy and tradgedy like The Covenant books. The characters that Donaldson creates are the most amazing literary creations in history. If the people in our world today had half the dignity, unselfishness, integrity, and love that the people of the land have, we would not be in this social nightmare that we find ourselves in. Concerning the movie, Harrison Ford should not be Covenant, the role belongs to Tom Hanks! Scincerely, Jason
Rating: Summary: ADDICTING!!!! Review: I found this book (and the rest of the series) to best some ofthe best books I have ever read!!! I read all 6 books in successionin less than two weeks. I then found myself looking for more. Stephen R. Donaldson's talent for writing puts you right there in the middle of this mystical world. You don't have to imagine the scenery. He paints the picture so well that it automatically comes to you. I highly recommend this book and the remainder of the Thomas Covenent Chronicles to anyone who enjoys fantasy style books. You won't be disappointed!
Rating: Summary: The ONLY series that I read again, and again, and again... Review: Lord Foul's Bane (The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever, Book 1) by Stephen R. Donaldson is simply the BEST fantasy fiction ever written!!! Donaldson received the prized HUGO award for it!
There's no fence straddling here--you'll either love the books or hate them! The story is about Thomas Covenant, a simple man that has developed leprosy. To survive with this ailment, requires that he has aknowledged his impotence and his fraility. In the fantasy land he finds himself in, only he can save the inhabitants! They are depending on a man that can never permit himself the possible delusion of being powerful, hence his title "the Unbeliever!" For him to admit having power in the "Land" could very wll plunge him into the depts of dispair! To a leper, being powerful means being delusional means sure death!
The crux of the delimma is: does he remain impotent and save himself and damn the Land, or does he accept the Land and damn himself
