Summary: It is like nothing ever written before!
Review: I don't know how to describe the masterful job Mr. Donaldson did throughout the entire series. Everything echoes the human spirit in all of its complexities. Each character was a *real* person, not a two-dimesional "he hacks up the bad guys and lives happily ever after" character, which regretfully seems to have become the norm these days. The land itself is life-like, with mountains and oceans, peaceful plains and deadly bogs. And the language he uses... If you do not have a large vocabulary now, you will by the end of the book. And the suprising part is that the words *enhance* the story, and the emotions that are evoked. Never have I felt despair and joy, anger and helplessness in such amounts from one book. I was drawn through the good and the bad just as Covenant was compelled to save himself, and later, the land. It was as if I became Covenant, or in the second series Dr. Avery, as they sought for the truth of the Land. I definately recommend this book t! o all readers. Be forwarned, though. All other books will pale in comparison to this series of six facinating books. I first read the series when I was fifteen, and it has permanently etched itself into my mind. You will find yourself drawn to read the series repeatedly, too. Whether you are new to the fantasy genre or stout reader, read this series, and nothing will ever be the same again. And I mean that in a *very* positive manner.

Summary: I wouldn't recommend this series to all
Review: Although Donaldson is a great writer, if you like a good hero and fun reading, this is not the series for you. I've read hundreds of fantasy books and by the end of this series, I just wanted the main character to die and end all of the depressing reading. So don't say I didn't warn you.

Summary: Like wading thru cold maple syrup
Review: I will say that Donaldson's settings and concept were unique at the time of this series's conception. It might even be said that he revitalized an ailing genre with his well thought out epic. But be warned; this novel will leave intellectually spent. Covenant is perhaps the most indecisive, whiny fantasy "hero" I've ever read. I find him thorougly dislikable. He's the kind of guy you don't ask "how ya doing?" because he'll take an hour telling exactly what's wrong with his life.

Summary: Excellent - must read!
Review: When I first started this I wasn't too sure. The first couple of chapters are slow. But once you get into it, there's no mistake you HAVE to read on. Covenant I can relate to, he's not just your average hero, he's REAL. And guess what I'm back here to buy - yep, the next two in the trilogy!

Summary: BE WARNED
Review: Detractors of Mr. Donaldson's "Covenant" series, after numerous rereadings, will claim that it is just another "talisman-toting, confused heir-to-the-power-that'll-whip-evil" story. They'll even cite passages and page numbers for you. One thing is certain about the series. Once you begin to read it, you will do so until you're finished. You'll read all six. You may well read the first at your first sitting, since the pages MUST be turned... Then, after you've fallen in love with the notion of "Bloodguard," and hated Linden Avery even as you wanted her for Covenant... Even after you've dreamed of having white gold of your own... You'll spout off on one side or the other. Then, you'll reread...

Summary: It is a awsome book.
Review: The book is the best book I have ever read. From the peak of Kevin's Watch, to the Mithil Stonedown. I think Stephen Donaldson is a great author, and I enjoyed all of the other books in the Thomas Covenant series.

Summary: The worst fantasy novel ever? maybe.
Review: This book has the most masochistic following I've ever heard of. Lord Foul's Bane was pure, unadulterated torture to read. It had nothing to offer me. The world is boring , it is filled with boring creatures and characters, but the very worst part is the "anti-hero" Thomas Covenant. Don't be mislead by the term anti-hero when it is applied to Covenant. This is not some loosely moraled but otherwise entertaining character, nor is he the hardcore kill em all and take no prisoners hero/villain.He's more the wimpy, whiny, irritating, rape a girl who has designs on you anyway kind of anti-hero. Save yourself from some of the worst reading imaginable, pick up a copy of Game Of Thrones, Dune, Eye Of The World[series],Tolkien etc... Sit back and enjoy.

Summary: Why?
Review: Why the hell did the "hero" rape that girl. It doesn't jive with my idea of a heroic thing to do. I thought that aside from the rape, the book was well written and it was an interesting story. I would reccomend this book.

Summary: One of the best books ever.
Review: This book was one of the most interesting books I have ever read. The storyline was superb. I have read many books in my life, but few have I ever read twice. I read the whole series, then I read the SECOND chronicols of Thomas Covanant, THEN I read it all over again. This is a book I highly reccomend everyone read.

Summary: The Other Great Fantasy Series
Review: Truly a masterful book. I have read the first Trilogy three times now, at different times in my life, and each reading has revealed new thematic depths which had passed unnoticed previously. Never obvious, always compelling, and thoroghly well-written; never have I remained so focused on a book. Perhaps the universe of the Land lacks the depth of history and legend found in Middle-Earth, but for what it may lack there, it more than makes up for with its compelling presentation of the fundamental truths of service, power, and responsibility. Not for the faint of heart, distinctly heavier than Tolkien, and truly a demonstration of the power and worth of a much-abused genre.

These books, the first Thomas Covenant trilogy, are truly Donaldson's masterworks. Many of his other books are very, very good, but in my opinion he never equalled his achievement here.
