Rating: Summary: Some Nazi propaganda inside Review: The Witching Hour is a master piece. No doubt about it, I even presented it to someone I care. The supernatural story is so well written and so rich that you can't take your eyes off the 1000 pages book. But it has some genetic purism that sounds like nazism and becomes more clear in the second book - Lasher. Anyway it not waste of time read it, I would read it again.
Rating: Summary: the best trilogy of books i ever read Review: i've always been a huge fan of science fiction, but anne rice really turned me on to it. this book was so interesting that i couldn't put it down. i don't normally read that fast but i read this book in 2 days. if you read this book you have to complete the trilogy and read lasher and taltos also. you'll understand when you read this book. it's kind of like a soap opera and you can't wait to find out what happens. your emotions will go every which away. you'll be crying, laughing, jumping, and screaming right along with the characters. Anne Rice is a brilliant writer in my opinion and if you read her books then you'll come to the same conclusion. try it out!
Rating: Summary: A definite must read! Review: I had long been a Stephen King fan, well over 15 years, but the first time I picked up a Anne Rice novel...well, I was hooked. The Witching Hour was my first, and it remains my favorite. The imagery is so life-like that at times I thought I just had to be there with the characters...how else could I feel those New Orleans breezes? I became enthralled by the very idea that a "witch" could also be "human" that I sought out all the books I could find on that subject. Anne Rice certainly sold me on her opinions....maybe she can change your.
Rating: Summary: A Masterpiece! Patience is a virtue! Review: Yes, this book does have alot of setup, but its worth it! This is a chronical of works here! I enjoyed every page...Ms. Rice's writing is so encompassing that you feel as though you ARE a fly on the wall. The sights, sounds and smells of New Orleans are within reach while you read. I was absolutely addicted to this series and read one night for 9 hours straight. (bad move, I know) but I could not put the books down! Highly recommended. P.S.> If you have no imagination, MOVE ON!
Rating: Summary: Uncommon Rice Review: After having read other works by Rice, "Witching Hour" fits, and yet doesn't fit her usual style. The characters are as vivid as any of her other characters (from her early Vampire Chronicals), and her plot is as steeped in family secrets and history. Yet, after all the build up to bring the reader to the climax, Rice just seems to give up on the ending. After reading it, it is quite obvious that she purposly crafted the ending as she did so that a sequel would be possible. Too bad, I think the ending hurts the work. Then, when her characters and their sexual appetites are compared to her usual cannon of subjects, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that for the most part, her male characters of "Witching Hour" were not homosexual, nor did they have any strange sexual hang-ups (expect for the occasional male Mayfair ancestor)-- as was a common theme in her Vampire Chronicals. This was a nice, and welcome change from her almost common usage of homoerotic themes and sub-plots.
Rating: Summary: Southern Gothic at its Best Review: This was the first book I read by Anne Rice and was absolutely enthralled from the first chapter. Her voice is so delicious and contagious that once you've finished the novel it becomes surprisingly difficult to distinguish this novel from non-fiction. You feel pulled by an invisible force to visit New Orleans yourself to recount the steps taken by this family. You'll find yourself, once there, walking in the Garden District waiting to see Lasher at every turn. I can't wait to go back! Ms. Rice has an uncanny ability to draw her reader into a time warp where reality is blurred. I am ready for more of this family...I simply can't wait!
Rating: Summary: A very slow, methodical book Review: First Anne Rice book that I have read. I am unsure as to read her others. The book is as thick as Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, but lacks the tension so vital in holding a readers attention. Several times I put it down and read (and finished) something else. Some of the characters were extremely well developed to the point of boredom, others were so underdeveloped it was hard to grasp their significance or role in the story at all. The story zooms in and out, to nasueum. Rice, although having a poor sense of plot, and tension, has a fabulously rich vocabularily that is a pleasure to read. Characterization clearly is her strength. Plot is not.
Rating: Summary: For serious good book lovers Review: This was my first Anne Rice book and the best book I have read in years. It draws you in and captivates you making it difficult to put down. The geneology of the Mayfairs is long and tends to confuse, but once you figure it all out ( and it does require some memory and thinking) you will be amazed . Not to mention the lives of each individual character and their connections with each other. Unles you read it, it can not be explained. Although the ending is somewhat of a dissapointment, it still leaves you longing for more. I have read all 3 of the witch chronicles and still wanted more, in fact the second time around was just as captivating as the first reading. Please note that I did have to read The Witching Hour with the shades drawn, the character of Lasher made me a little paranoid as to what might be standing outside in the dark. Also this years family vacation will be to New Orleans. Thank you Anne Rice for introducing me to a society and culture that I really never paid much attention to.
Rating: Summary: Best Anne Rice novel published Review: This was the first book I read by Anne Rice, and I believe it is the best. Once you start reading it, you simply cannot put it down. Rice has a way of drawing you into her characters, and before you know it, you're hooked. I've read most of her vampire novels and other works, and in my opinion, The Witching Hour is the best.
Rating: Summary: The best yet Review: the first Anne Rice I read was Interview with the Vampire. That was pretty ok, but this is really good. The way Rice describes everything just takes you right to the particular scene, like you're there watching everything... like Lightner.
