Summary: More than just a fantasy book
Review: I have come back to this book ("Magician" - both Apprentice and Master in one edition), nearly 10 years after first reading it and recalling only the scene where Pug is standing on the top of the Assembly's tallest spire about to become a Black Robe.

I was astounded by the sheer depth of characters, cultures, plot and human aspects of this book. The story builds up slowly and the reader grows up with two boys, as good as brothers, whose fates are slowly uncovered. Swept along by circumstance, each boy finds himself in a situation at the very edge of his imagination. They, as well as others in the book, become the impetus for change in a world invaded by the alien Tsurani -- or so they believe. Until Marcos, a magician, enters the scene.

Raymond Feist obviously thought this book out well, despite this being his first professional effort and, by his own admission, "not really knowing what he was doing". The characters and events are carefully placed, tying in neatly not only with later developments, but also with the strange world of Kelewan and the Tsuranuanni (and the "Daughter of the Empire" series).

Imaginative, creative, entertaining and captivating. My only criticism would be that its characters are missing a bit of raw emotion and passion. Hence, the four stars.

Summary: The homogenization of myth and magic and fantasy.
Review: I really tried to read this book, and Feist in general, a couple of times because so many people like him. So, I am probably acting out of my own ignorance and predudices, but, I find the little work that I have read of Feist, cutesy cliche ridden tripe! A wizard with a pet dragon, how original! A protagonist named Pug, excuse me, I feel nauseous. A friend who gave me the book to read said "read this book, what a great wizard's duel at the end", I couldn't make it to the end, and if you are discriminating and like thought provoking ideas, wit and intelligence in your reading material, look elsewhere.

Summary: A Page Turner
Review: No, it's not the most well written book I've ever read but it's a page turner. On the critical side, there were quite a few places where I found myself re-reading sections because the language just wasn't put together well. It also seemed to be lacking a little in the depth of plot. It does make up for that with many good back stories that intertwine. It's just not as deep as I'd like it to be.

I really don't see why people are comparing this to Tolkien. It's not. The writing is different, the worlds are different and the story is different. Before I read this book heard the compairisons and had that in mind when I first started with it. It just didn't materialze.

Even with what I've mentioned above, the book was a good read. Feist is a great story teller, even if the story is lacking a little in depth. I'd personally rather have more depth and less bredth.. or have the book be longer.. or split into two books, but I'd still recomend it to anyone who's a Fantasy reader.

Summary: The Beginning of an Epic Tale
Review: In a day and age where chivalry is all but gone and common courtesy for one's fellow man is rare, a book like this helps you to remember that we are not alone in this world, we share it with others, and we need to think of them as well as ourselves.

I have read this book more times than I can count -- and every time, I find more to love about it!

This is the beginning of a story told in 9 books (I think -- it may be more) and you lose the flavor of the world if you don't start here.

Some of the things Feist writes about, you can imagine as if you were there. Others, you could swear you could hear what he was describing.

I've laughed at the humor in this series and cried when favorite characters died. I wanted to name my son Arutha, but my husband wouldn't let me! (You'll know what I mean if you read the series.)

This is a wonderful story! It's the kind of book that you want to finish so you can see what happens, but you don't want to finish it because you don't want the story to end. Thankfully, there are at least 8 more books to pick up... Make sure you read this series if you like Swords and Sorcery fantasy. No collection is complete without it!

Summary: Quite a Surprise
Review: MAGICIAN had been sitting on my "soon to be read" shelf for nearly four years, having been put off time and time again because I had a feeling it would be a Belgariad clone. Surprisingly, it was far superior.

I've seen dozens of fantasy epics featuring the "orphan kid who grows up to save the kingdom," but this one grabbed me right away and kept me glued with its steady flow of action.

The RIFTWAR SAGA, at first glance, seems to be your standard fantasy setting with elves, dwarves and the generic goblins and monsters... but Feist's interesting system of magic, and the idea of the "rifts" that allow the enemy to invade -bring new life to the formula making MAGICIAN very worth while.

-As someone else said- this is indeed a great introduction to fantasy reading!

Summary: I have read this book 9 TIMES and i want to read it again!
Review: I started reading fantasy books back in year 6. I was 11 years old and i was escaping to worlds i had previously only dreamed about. It was only year 7 when i discovered Magican. I was looking for something to read and was going through the bookshelf when mum came through and said to read it. I finished it 2 days later. The next books where finished just as quickly. All the way to The Kings Buccaneer. From then on i have bought the books on the day of their release here in Australia, and finished them in a day. Magican in a fabulous book that i highly recommend to anyone who is after a good read. A great tale of magic and friendship. I have given the book a 5 star rating, and some people won't agree. You can pick holes in the book and find things wrong, BUT only if you want to. Free your mind and make some time and sit down and relax and read. I'm sure you'll enjoy. Open you mind and travel to Midkemia.

Summary: Epic Fantasy Classic
Review: I read The Lord of the Rings many years ago and it is still one of my favorite works of fiction. Since then I have read many "epic fantasy" novels and I have learned not to expect much. There is a lot of junk out there, but there are also a lot of fun and entertaining books. Magician falls into the latter category. It will never be considered a literary classic, but in its genre it certainly stands out. It has the standard ingredients: good elves, bad elves, dwarves, goblins, etc. There are dragons, magicians and enchanted weapons. The twist here is that the enemy comes from another dimension. So, while it isn't the most original work of fiction, there is enough to make it interesting.

Feist tells a great story; it is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. It is light reading, the pages just melt away, but it doesn't insult the intelligence. For those who like imaginary world fantasy I highly recommend this one.

Summary: Great Fantasy Novel
Review: This is the story of an orphan named Pug, and the tale of his growing up in the fantasy setting of Midkemia. Midkemia is a typical fantasy world.. Dwarves, Elves, Dragons: However, the story mainly focuses on Pug and his friends, and their adventures in the small kingdom of Crydee.

Once Pug becomes an apprentice to Master Magician Kulgan, not long after that a strange series of events occurs.. Midkemia is invaded by outworlders - people from another world who enter it through a "Rift", a tearing in the space which connects both world. A great war starts between all the Midkemian races and the outworlders. I won't tell more not to ruin the fun! This is a really fun book, and while not "inventing the wheel", Raymond E. Feist weaves an engaging story. I found I really cared about all the characters by the time I reached the end of the book.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This Book has sexual overtones
Review: the first time i read this book i was taken into a world of magic and hierarchies, but now that i reread it i relize that this whole book is about BSDM. Like when Kulgan keeps Pug in his dungeon. Or when we hear about thomas running away with princess carline. He comes back with his "sword" all covered with gew and princess carline can't a that grin off her face.

Summary: Magician::Apprentice
Review: The book begins with an orphan named Pug, who was an apprentice to a master sorcerer Kulgan. Pug showed great power in times of stress, which puzzled Kulgan. Pug was then captured and enslaved by the Tsurani, who was invaders from another world. He earned a new name--Milamber, after the sorcerers there learned of his magic! After learning from the sorcerers, Pug soon discovered the hidden powers within him and how to control them. With that he then became the most powerful magician of both worlds. His adventures and feats are unbelieveable. Journey with him back to his world and experience his fight against the alien invaders of his world. Magician::Apprentice & Master are the two best books I have ever bought. I have read them at least a dozen times and each time is better than the last. Thanks to the writing of Raymond E. Feist, he brings the people to life in these books. If you are a person that loves magic, dragons, elves, etc.., AND a great story plot that will keep your attention, then this is the book for you. And you will find it very hard to put down.
