Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Average - doesn't stand up well for multiple reads Review: This was really the first fantasy book I ever read. I read it in junior high and couldn't put it down. However, I've recently re-read it, and compared with the Dragonlance and Salvatore's FR stuff, unfortunately it just doesn't hold up.For one thing, the story is light and wasn't entirely gripping. THe characters are okay, but not spectacular. I enjoyed Feist's writing style, descriptive but not too wordy. I think overall the story could have used more action. I haven't read the subsequent riftwar books, and I'm not sure if I'm going to.
Rating: ![2 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-2-0.gif) Summary: not so good Review: feist builds his characters nicely. a lot from the character's everyday life. the enemies come suddenly. the plot lacks something, something that would make it really interesting. we are not told enough about them, and there is not enough suspence here. nor are the moments of suspence well enough written. i don't know, but feist has never really convinced me. he makes everything seem like stereotypes. it's probably the way he describes people's reactions.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Great! Review: After reading Krondor the Betrayal ,I was certain that all of Feist's work was that poorly written. As soon as I began this ,I realized that I was wrong. The only action he put in was legitimate, there was not at all to much of it ,with the exception of the end.If there was such a rating as 4 and 1/2 ,I would have rated it that ,for the end is slightly monotenous on the action side. But five stars is the closest. Feist almost has as much magic detail as Terry Brooks ,and great cultural developement .He includes all the creatures a fantasy-attic can hope for:elves, dwarves, dragons, goblins, trolls, everything I could ask for. Pug is a young boy in the city of Crydee. On Choosing Day,he is surprised to be chosen by Kulgan, the Magician for an apprentice.Though he has made a couple magical achievments,Pug is not at ease with magic and its ways. But as soon as there is evidence of invaders from across the sea,Pug,Kulgan, and some others must embark on a quest to warn the Kingdom of invasion. P.S.Any Jordan fan is sure to like Feist's characters.

It the first book out of the Riftwarsaga and in my opinions the best Start a Saga ever could get! I really recommend this book to everybody who likes Fantasy!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: The Ugly Pugling Review: I can't wait to read the sequel! Raymond E. Feist's spellbinding tale of a hapless teenage misfit that blossoms from being a virtually "useless" servant to a trusted member of the royal court is artfully rendered. By its very nature, nothing about fantasy fiction is factual. However, Pug and the company of characters that surround him are portrayed with such understated warmth that the entire surreal world of Midkemia seems not only plausible... But, inviting. If such a world existed, I would be the first one in line for a prolonged visit. Unfortunately, I will have to content myself with a few hours here and there as I joyfully read my way through Magician: Master. If it is half as good as the original, I am in for a real treat!
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Great Story, Extremely poor proofwriting from publisher Review: I have purchased all of the Riftwar Saga Series and have enjoyed the story immensely. I first got turned on to the books due to a random pc game selection. It intriqued me enough to want to read the stories. There is ONE MAJOR disappointment with ALL the books and that is the publishing house evidently doesn't consider proofing their products important. For those of us who spend a lot of money on hardcover books, this is a major point of contention. It is equally frustrating at the current price of paperbacks as well. In most of the books there are minor mistakes like mis-spelled words, some of them quite short and in common everyday useage, and a great many punctuation errors which leave you having to reread sentences to understand the dialogue. In one later book in the series, there is a section where the character's names are reversed and it throws you into total confusion until you figure out that the names have been substituted for another character's. I contacted the publishing house and they aren't concerned at all that the books they publish are barely literate. A real shame for the author's contracted out with them. This may be a minor point to some people but for me it is a sore point of contention. If the people who publish the books can't spell and produce a quality product, illiteracy in this country can only increase. If you can get past the p*** poor publishing mistakes, the story is a great read. Sadly enough, the pc games aren't much better in the literacy department, but still a good time to be had overall. It is to be hoped that Mr. Feist will have more say in his books final printing before release frome here on out.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Magician: Apprentice Review: One of my high school teachers introduced me to this book after discussing the other types of books that I love to read. That was nearly seven years ago. I have read this book about seven times over and have found new things to enlighten my imagination. The detail in which Feist describes seens from the open page to the last does entitle him to be named one of Tolkein's successors. I hadn't read Tolkein until after I had read Feist and am suprised on how similar their writing styles are. If you like Tolkein, you would love any of Feist's masterpieces. Apprentice gives the foundation to the other 18 books that have come after it.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Mixed Feelings... Review: i've always been a fan of medieval fantasy. my sister's boyfriend was obsessed with the time period, and he gave me all of his old fantasy books. i remember glancing at the cover on this one (the old 80's cover, with the wizard and pug on the cover), and i thought it looked very interesting, and decided to give it a read. of course, i was only 10 years old at the time. last year, (i'm 16 now) i finally decided to give it another chance, because i had put down the book after the first page. after awhile, i couldn't believe how far along i had come with the book. i had fallen in love with all of the characters, it was basically just one big adventure. i had gotten through more than half of the book, when i all of a sudden could not tolerate it anymore. all it was, (well atleast it seemed like it to me, that is) basically just a long war that never ends. i guess i prefer action AND romance in the same thing, and we did see a little romance going on between pug and carline. but it wasn't enough to suit me. too much battle, not enough romance. but i guess that's my opinion, and me being a girl and all, i'm sure you can understand. i really had high hopes for this book. it could have been amazing if it just.....progressed a little more, instead of it being slow, relentless battle. but, since probably a lot of you are not like me, you'll love this book. read it, you'll enjoy it, even though i didn't as much as i thought i would...
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: absolutely the best book I have ever read. Review: I can't say anymore. If you buy this book you will not regret it! Great story and wonderful characters! One warning, if you buy this one, you will have to buy the rest of them!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Pure Entertainment. Review: Great writing. I love fantasy and sci-fi. But, sometimes the simplicity in the writing sort of makes it a struggle to get through some of the books out there. When I find one that is written well and has a great storyline...needless to say I'm thrilled. This was gripping pretty much all the way through. Entertainment from beginning to end.
