Summary: Fiest is a master of Character development
Review: I was first introduced to the Fiest magic through The Magician, and have read both series, he has the ability the draw you into the books in a way that hasn't been seen since Tolkin. a marvelous read, but beware once you enter his worlds you can never really leave.

Summary: It RULES!!!
Review: I got to know about Midkemia by downloading the computer role-playing game betrayal at krondor. It was really, REALLY good, but there were some things I didn't get. (The history, etc.) So I decided to read the Riftwar Saga, starting with Magician, and so far it rules! Fiest's books are a lot like Tolkien's

Summary: An excellent piece of Fantasy Fiction, Bold and Moving
Review: There are Fantasy books, and then there's Magician. Bold, Rich and Epic, Magician is a literary classic which does honor to the spirit of fantasy. Clever plots, real characters and eloquent yet clear narrative make this the best novel I have ever read before or since, and I sincerely recommend it to anyone and everyone.

Summary: The Universe and Two Worlds Within It
Review: The real magic of the entire Riftwar Saga, which begins with Magician:Apprentice, is in the intertwining of many cultures on one world (Midkemia) and an entire other world. Many authors have written about multiple worlds, but always with no historical authenticity outide of their purpose in the story. They throw a land, kingdom, world, etc. together just for the sake of their story. Raymond E. Feist has crafted a tale of worlds that could really exist; one that we can observe through his writing. No other author has ever come close to the incredibly authentic, richly detailed worlds in which Raymond Feist's chararcters pursue their destinies. The world of the Tsurani is idealogically opposite of that in which Pug and his contemporaries reside. And even in Midkemia, there are so many different cultures, The great kingdom of Kesh, for one, about which an entire series could be written. I still feel, 5 years after reading the series, an attachment to the Riftwar Saga that is hard to explain. From the creation of the universe to the struggles of everyday life on Midkemia/Tsuranuani, Raymond E. Feist has left a mark on the world of Fantasy that will not soon (if ever) be surpassed. Read it

Summary: Raymond E. Feist.....Where have you been all my life?
Review: Incredibly rich story line. Unbelievable plot. Godly characters. Raymond E. Feist is on a train to greatness. The story just pulls you into it. You almost feel like Pug's Jimminy Cricket. His conscious. Or you feel like you are standing next to him at all times. You WILL like this or you won't be allowed to read fantasy anymore

Summary: An amazingly rich adventure
Review: I have read only two negative reviews of this book. Those who wrote them obviously didn't grasp the true scope of this series. This book isn't trying to emulate Tolkien. I know talking about other books is taboo, but I believe those who wrote those reviews would have better understood what this book was all about had they read the rest of the Riftwar Saga. I find it hard to believe how a book involving two different worlds and hinting at the space between them can be compared with Tolkien. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, although broad in scope, involved only Middle Earth. If Midkemia is to be taken as Feist's Middle Earth counterpart, then what can be compared to Kelewan? Magician is a wonderful tale, painting vividly the picture of a war spanning two worlds. It should not be compared with Tolkien's works, but should be hallowed with them

Summary: Makes a great paperweight
Review: Better than Tolkien...uh-huh. Don`t make me laugh, guys. And what a coincidence it is that everyone who read this book has an inexplicable urge to compare it to Tolkien. It couldn`t possibly have anything to do with the fact that Midkemia bears an amazing resemblance to Middle-Earth. Nah. Never mind that one can easily interchange Mac Mordain Cadal for Moria, and Elvandar for Lorien. All right. Obviously, originality of SETTING is out of the question. But it could have been saved. The fact remains that original ideas and good characters can save the most pitiful fantasy. And an endless amount of ideas did come close: the rifts, the Valheru, the elves` Dark Brothers; all this might have contributed to making Midkemia into a rich, multilayered world. Only one slight problem: the characters were lousy. There was no development whatsoever, whether in terms of personality or relationships. As a classic example, Pug and Katala`s Great Romance was `developed` with a kick in the pants. Subtle. Naturally the moment Katala kicks Pug they realize they were always meant for each other. And then, practically the next page Tomas charms the widowed Queen Aglaranna ( who is obviously feeling very bereaved just then) and before you know it...ta da! Preeeesenting Great Romance II ! I am seriously inclined to think that this book appeals to people who wish it were all that easy. And Carline is exactly the type of princess who is always breathtakingly beautiful because if she wasn`t someone would give HER a kick -- out a ten-story window. Arutha is described as being a-brimful of irony, but overall comes across as a put-upon sourpuss. On the whole, after hearing how great this series is, I found it a major disappointment

Summary: A wonderful, masterful tale.....
Review: Characterization of unparalleled proportions, you feel each characters pains and joys as you get to know them a little better each page. This book, being the gateway into Midkemia and the Riftwar Saga, keeps you glued to the pages. Since reading this, I have read each subsequent entry into the Riftwar series and am currently enjoying A Darkness at Sethanon. This is truly dream-rendering material, for I have dreamt of Pug and his companions in the land of the Riftwar..... Raymond E. Feist grips a boys sense of adventure and heroics and weaves them into an interesting and always eventful plot. Thanks Raymond, for a truly wonderful tale.....
