Summary: A wonderful beginning to a most enjoyable series.
Review: Magician is a wonderful beginning to a most enjoyable series. Throughout the book, and indeed the series, Mr. Feist creates a captivating world of high adventure with truely likable characters. I found the book difficult to put down as I followed the two boyhood friends throughout their adventures. A must for Fantasy/Sci-Fi readers.

Summary: A worthwhile read.
Review: I've just read Magician (the single-volume edition) for the second time. The first time I read it was about 15 years ago, and again I found it to be an enjoyable read.

Feist has taken fairly stock fantasy elements and created something fun and interesting with them. I was not at all surprised to find out that the book originated from a fantasy rpg setting - it has that feel to it, as other gamers will have picked up.

Other readers have focussed on the book's good points, so I won't repeat them.

The characters are rather stereotyped. We have the elderly wizard, the taciturn woodsman, the impetuous princess, her brothers - one fair-haired and sunny-natured, the other dark and serious. But Feist makes an attempt to develop them further than that, and to create relationships between them.

Most of the characters are likeable. There are no real villains. Those responsible for the invasion are left mostly nameless and faceless. The Thieves Guild are a helpful bunch and even Black Guy is revealed to have a peculiar streak of honour.

I would have liked to see more prominent female characters. They're there, but as fringe characters, only defined by their relationships with the men. Even the elven queen succumbs to the charms of a male character and is helpless to resist him. Perhaps another indication that this sprung from the imagination of a role-player? ;)

I also found that the passage of time was handled rather clumsily. One moment we're getting a day-by-day account of events, next thing a year has passed. This can be done well, and has been in other books, but here it was confusing and irritating.

Another thing I found somewhat irritating was Feist's writing style. It's unfortunate that most writers either have great ideas, or a way with words, and there's a very small overlap between the two.

But all-in-all, a worthwhile read. I'm keen to read the follow-up books, and that's the best indication of how enjoyable it was.

Summary: Great book
Review: This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. Raymond E. Feist really brings the characters to life. This is a must read for all the fantasy lovers out there.

Summary: AWESOME!!!!
Review: I would like to sincerely thank Feist for writing this masterpiece. Magician (and the rest of his books) are definately some of the best books out there. The characters are so realistic and believable that you actually feel their pain and joy. I would venture to say that this book (and the entire Riftwar saga) is a must read for anyone who has even heard of Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

I don't think it is possible to read this book and not enjoy it. As soon as I finished reading it cover to cover(in a single afternoon), I flipped it over and read it again. If you haven't read this book yet, go down to the local bookstore and buy it today- you won't regret it.

Summary: The best fantasy book on the globe
Review: Magician is definetly the ultimate book in the fantasy world. It covers all the essential parts, that form a tremendous book. Magician has it all: thrilling battle scenes, a sensible love story and a gripping main story. The imagination of Feist is simply overwhelming. He really creates his own new world! The adventures in Midkemia and Kelewan are definetly worth reading. Both, for fantasy-enthuasiatics and newcomers to this genre.

Summary: An epic novel that captures the mind and engages the senses!
Review: In Magician: Apprentice, along with its continuation (read: sequel) Magician: Master, fantasy novelist Raymond Elias Feist has created nothing short of a modern epic, the only comparison that comes to mind being George Lucas' Star Wars trilogy.

Mr. Feist has crafted a captivating work that I for one found nearly impossible to put down. While it may seem to drag on a bit in some parts, I found it to be quite fulfilling, and an excellent investment of my time. However, it should be noted that to fully appreciate and comprehend the grand scale on which this novel works, the reader absolutely must read the other books in the Riftwar Saga, Silverthorn and the grand finale, A Darkness at Sethanon.

I highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for an engaging escape to a realm filled with wisdom and wonder, treachery and deceit. Your imagination will thank you!

Summary: This book is a serious page-turner.
Review: This book clearly shows the pure talent that Feist possesses, especially since he was inexperienced when he wrote it and free of professional "biases". The way it's presented is incredible, and very easy to relate to, due to Feist's devotion to "realism" in his fantasy world. A purely outstanding work of fiction.

Summary: THE GREATEST BOOK EVER!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Buy it! This is a great book and you won't be able to put it down! Also be sure to read the rest of the Riftwar series. Raymond E. Fiest is a GENIUS!
