Rating: Summary: One of the best fantasy books ever Review: This book has got to be one of the best fantasy books ever written. I couldn't put it down. I read the entire 800 or so pages in two sittings. The second sitting was around 12 hours...time just flew reading this book. It was impossible to find a place to stop. I just had to know what happened next. Make sure you have the time if you pick this up.
Rating: Summary: Robert Jordan's Evil Twin!! Review: Imagine if your Gym Teacher decided to write a fantasty novel...this is the outcome. Terry Goodkind obviously read the Wheel of Time series and decided, "Hey if he can write a book so can I! Jordan just has a beard, I have a beard and a pony tail!!" Goodkind obviously takes ideas from Jordan and puts his own horrible spin on it. My guess is that he was dropped on his head as a child several times, there is no other explanation for writing of such poor quality. I would suggest that those of you who like these novels go and ask your parents if maybe you slipped from their grasp as a child....
Rating: Summary: For most fantasy-fans, this one's for you. Review: I know this book has been heralded as everything from brilliant to engrossing, but to be brutally fair I found it neither. This is no novice reader talking. I know what Goodkind was trying to do, and, darnit!, he gave it a good shot, but he missed by about a barn's length. For those of you who don't mind stereotypical characters, overly-evil minions, and hero's that you just know are going to escape this one alive and with their sense of humor, then Wizard's First Rule is the right choice. It is also a lesson to aspiring writers of fantasy of how a good idea can get sidetracked and run afoul of a dozen no-no's. Although Goodkind has a lot of intersting stuff to say, stuff that its about time was said, he takes far too long to do it, almost as if he was trying to jam all of it into the first book, so his reader's would be hooked and buy the next. DON'T. This is one of the few times I have bought a book without first reading it in a library, for free, and has reinforced that personal preference a hundred-fold. For all of this, however, most people should get a kick out of reading it once, and the persistant (or stubborn) may even try it twice.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: Yes, it may be copying of certain things, but to say he is plaugerizing is silly. He is an excellent writer, and out of the 5 people in my class that read his book, we all loved it, and finished it in 2-5 days. If you aren't into fantasy then you might not like it but if you like fantasy stories, this rates in the top ten, he sequels are good too, but the main character gets a little too powerful, so do the enemies.Read it!
Rating: Summary: Great Book Its good but The Best Review: Ok This Book and the rest in the series were a very nice read. I agree that its hard to put down but i dont agree with some people stating its better then Tolkien. Its nice to see a book thats not a blue print of the rest.. ie right along the lines of Tolkien meaning group of 5 people go around the land killing nastys then going down into a Moria-like Cave system, attacked escape, then go kill some Thousand year old Bad Guy. Little over used, but Goodkind broke away from this mold somewhat which was very nice.
Rating: Summary: Passable - But hasn't it been done before and better? Review: Terry Goodkind really tried on this one....but it seems he fell extremely short. This book is the epitome of Fantasy 'been done before, should work again.' It is your typical hero, evil villian, 'oh, gee, if I don't save the world we'll all die'. <yawn> Besides that fact that the story line is tired, has anyone here read The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks? This Gookind drivel seems to be a sad, sorry re-write of the aforementioned book, which was written in the 1970's. Let's see, which came first? Gee....a wonder?
Rating: Summary: Terry Goodkind is amazing!!!! Review: One of my father's friends recommended the book to me, but at thetime I was busy reading Sci-fi. A month later, I saw it in the school Library, and was totally amazed. I thought that such works could only be produced by Tolkien, but I guess I was wrong. Two days after finishing the book, I bought Stone of Tears, then bought Wizards First Rule, then soon after, Blood of the Fold, (love the title). I then waited and waited until Temple of the Winds came out in paperback. I was lucky, I had just finished reading Blood when I saw that Temple of the Winds was out, I quickly bought it, and had it read by the end of the next day! If it wasn't the weekend, I know I would have missed school to read it!! Goodkind is the best new author I've read!
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Fantasy Books Ever! Review: Wizard's First Rule was one of the first fantasy books I ever read, and it set a high standard for all fantasy books I read after it. The Sword of Truth series can only be matched by the great classics of Fantasy, such as the Rings trilogy. I highly suggest this book for those beginning their trip into the world of fantasy, and for those that are seasoned vets.
Rating: Summary: Unreadable Review: I admit, I picked up my copy of WFR as "something to read between Jordan books." I was hoping to find at least a little bit of good reading in the meantime. Maybe I had Robert Jordan on the brain when I began reading because I was simply appaled by the sophmoric writing here. As a story-teller, Goodkind is passable. But as a writer, he is poor. Awful would be a better description, but I'm trying to be nice. Goodkind does not describe the events, he reports them. "He walked over to the table. He picked up the knife. It was a sharp knife. He walked over to the window, and looked out. It was dark." Writing like has no flow, no sweep. I find a choppy writing style unreadable. Here is the same group of sentences, but better. "Walking over to the table, he picked up the razor-shapr knife and peered out of the window into the darkness." It's difficult to comment on Goodkind's plot and characterization when he presents it so poorly. Therefor, I give this book an F-.
