Rating: Summary: Wow. Even more overrated than Jordan. Review: This book made me angry. Fifty pages in, I thought it might be good; three hundred pages in, I realized he doesn't write all that well; five hundred pages in, I realized there was no nuance nor shading to any of the principle characters, and that they were boring; six hundred pages in, I realized I was reading a sequence of disjointed scenes and passages that had no bearing on anything; eight hundred and twenty pages in I relaized what a sucker I was for wasting all this time.I think if a lot of the people below read books other than of the fantasy genre (and not Tom Clancy or John Grisham), they'd see there's not much to this guy.
Rating: Summary: This story could have been told in 10 pages Review: After finishing the last (dutch translated) Feist, a (former??) good friend of mine advised me to read this book. An outstanding book, he guarenteed me. How wrong he was indeed. The characters are flat, the story has been told dozens of times before. If this had been a short, conan like, story, it would heave been okay, not more, perhaps even less. I finish what I start and this is the sole reason why I finished the book. PLease terry pick up your former profession, whatever it was. I do have to admit that the Sid morth part was pretty kinky.
Rating: Summary: HARD TO PUT DOWN Review: I've just finished this book and had a hard time putting it down. excellent fantasy, It's hard to understand the extremes in reviews of Goodkinds work here, but thats what makes it an interesting world we live in. I've read some reviews of the books I haven't read yet and noticed some of the same people giving bad reviews to the sequels, question if there really that bad why are they reading the sequels. Anyway good stuff.
Rating: Summary: This book can be compared to the God of Fantasy..Tolken Review: I picked up this book on a very rainy morning. I needed a long book to sit down and relax with. When I got home I sat down and began reading, I scarcly got through the first chapter and I was completly hooked. I finished the book later on that evening. It was impossiable to put down. I can honestly say that I have never read anything so fasinating and exciting in a book. If you have not read this book then you have not truly lived. I feel that Terry Goodkind potrays his characters as people who you can relate to through feelings and emotions, through his writting he makes the words come alive as if by magic and it is as though you were living the story of Khalan and Richard. I have also read the following books in his series and I have to say each one just keeps getting better and better. Terry Goodkind you are a the master of fantasy, contuine in your great works.
Rating: Summary: A moderately enjoyable epic fantasy Review: Epic fantasy is not usually a genre I care for, but Wizard's First Rule was nonetheless enjoyable. Unlike other epic fantasies, the plot line is clear and relatively easy to follow, avoiding hoards of characters that mysteriously appear after prolonged absences and disappear just as sporadically. The protagonists Richard, Kahlan and Zedd are pleasant enough, despite the fact that they spend most of the book hiding their secrets from each other...Additionally, WFR has a very satisfactory conclusion with just enough loose ends to interest the reader in continuing the Sword of Truth series. Personally, I felt this was the best of the series as of yet. If you liked this, you might also try Wind from a Foreign Sky by Katya Reimann for some more good epic fantasy.
Rating: Summary: "Wizard's First Rule" is a miserable waste of paper. Review: Normally, if a book sucks, you can generally tell within the first few chapters. For some reason, I didn't realize how bad this one was until the very end. I finished it, sat back, picked up the sequel, and said, "What am I doing? This book was horrible! I don't want to read any sequels!" I suppose I hung on so long partly because it had been recommended to me by a fairly reliable source and partly because there was just enough promise to keep me hanging on. It was the bitter lack of that promise's fulfillment that makes me hate this book so much. There are only so many predictable, cheap, gratitous, space-wasting trashy fantasy standby scenes allowed in a book. "Wizard's First Rule" far exceeds its quota. It was terribly predictable and imitative. If you've read any fantasy at all, you've read this book. I think I've read better fantasy in "Conan the Barbarian" books. It comes nowhere near the Rings, or anything else. Avoid this miserable book. There is nothing to be gained by plowing through it.
Rating: Summary: Goodkind is a great story teller! Review: This is so filled with action I forgot it's not real
Rating: Summary: Dull, predictable, lousy characters, blah... Review: I am a well-read fantasy enthusiast, and I try not to be too critical of my favorite genre, but this story is downright lousy, and even worse it is extraordinarily long. Having read the Rings (which is of course my all-time favorite set), Terry Brooks, David Eddings, C.J. Cherryh, Steven Donaldson, and Robert Jordan, I have a deep love for imaginative fantasy. But what I detest are flat characters that do not truly change from one end of the book to the other. The dudly do-right, mr. naive character that has no inter-esting quirks or faults is boring to say the least. I don't like his exlanations of magic or his realm of the dead. The only thing that caught me was the Mord Sith episode, which did not fit with the rest... Yuk!
Rating: Summary: Simply amazing fantasy novel! Review: If you love epic fantasy series, this on is for you! The plots through the first 4 books are captavating! Unlike some other fantasy novels, this one doesn't gloss over the horrors of life. This series is full of torture, murder, and unfortunately even rape. I have read the first 7 books of Robert Jordan's Wheel of time (and not looking forward to the eighth.) Unlike Jordon's story, at the end of every one of Goodkind's books there is just _barely_ enough of a loose thread for the next book. Each book has a completely satisfying conclusion! The books have all of the depth of Jordan's WoT with a slightly better story. It's a little unnearving at first to notice about 600 parallels between the WoT series and Goodkind's Sword of Truth. But Goodkind does such a better job that you don't notice after a while. This book and the entire series all deserve 5 stars!
Rating: Summary: Nathan Bowie July 2nd 1999 Review: The book was great. Even though it was a really long book most of the time it was just impossible to put down. There is constant action and perfect characters. It is a simple story to tell, but if you want to tell about the story to make a reader eager you need to tell the whole story. But it's as simple as one man try to dominate all and conqueer the world buy using magic as his aid. When a young is searching for the man who killed his father he meets a very powerful woman. Since he doesn't know what he is getting into he joins in on the adventure and travels through a lot of trouble. This book is really much more interesting thatn i have told and it is fantasy so it has magic, wizards, dark wizards, and dragons. I recoomend that yyou read this because it is just a fantastic book. WARNING: the book is graphic but the gore and killings fit in perfect
