Rating: Summary: weak weak weak Review: A note I sent to a friend:I forgot to tell you how mad I became as I got into the new book that I am reading. You wouldn't believe how much Goodkind has "borrowed" from Jordan. I actually got out of bed to check the publishing dates on the books. 70% of Jordan's Wheel of Time series was published up to 4 years before Goodkind's Wizard's 1rst Rule. Anything good in Goodkind's book came from Jordan. You would think that I would be so disgusted that I would boycott Goodkind. Unfortunately, my irritation does not reach that far. It is like finishing up a bowl of BlueBell ice cream, wanting another but having no more BlueBell and so settling for the marshmallow imitation generic grocery brand - empty calories that are not nearly as satisfying. I am so weak...
Rating: Summary: Incredible Review: Let me sum this book up in one word..."Wow!" I haven't found a book of this caliber in over 13 years. As a general rule, I don't read fantasy books because they all follow the same mundane pattern. What makes this book pure genius is that the author doesn't hold your hand while you read it. A doorway to a magical world is opened and you are free to explore it with all of your imagination.
Rating: Summary: wizards first rule Review: Great reading with well developed characters , strong plot and gripping story
Rating: Summary: amazing-only way to describe it Review: this book was great. i read lots of books in this genre but this is by far teh best series. it totally hooked me and i read all the others as soon as possible. its a million times better than "The Lord of the Rings". a must read even if you're not a fan of fantasy novels.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant Review: When I first picked up Terry Goodkind's - Wizard's First Rule, I didn't know what to expect. I had never heard of Goodkind before. Once I started reading it I couldn't put the book down. I thought it was brilliant. I loved the characters and I loved the story. I thought it was very well written. It was like you were actually there traveling with Richard on his journey. The story was so exciting that after reading the first book I went out and bought the next four books. I read all four within two weeks. I had to force myself to put the book down. I am now awaiting book six-Faith of the Fallen. Anybody who loves to read about fantasy or is looking for a good adventure book should read Goodkind's-Wizard's First Rule. I guarantee you'll love it.
Rating: Summary: great book Review: this book was amazing. deffinately the best book i've ever read.
Rating: Summary: Best Novel Ever! Review: Im not gonna say alot here, except that this book is truly the best novel i have ever read. I have read all the subsequent installments in the series, all are amazing in themself, but this is where it all started, and it doesnt get any better... You dont have to be a fan of the fantasy genre to love this book, you just have to love reading a great story with incredible characters. So thats it, if you havent read it, do so immediately! Ive read tonnes of authors, in fantasy and other genres [king, koontz, easton ellis etc etc] alot are very good, but nothing compares to Terry Goodkind, and this is [in my opinion] his greatest work.
Rating: Summary: pretty good Review: This book had both good points, and some not so good points. As far as a writer goes, Goodkind is very good. He integrates craft into his writing effortlessly, and it pushes the story along very well. I liked the first half of this book much better than the second half. As any good writer should, Goodkind hides certain facts about the characters, compelling you to read further. But once the last big secret is revealed, the story fell apart. Toward the end I found myself shaking my head as the characters made choices that went against everything they had established so far. Some of the developments were simply absurd. This isn't to say that this book is all bad. There are likeable characters that (until the end) act more or less realistically. But as a whole it seems to be missing something; it doesn't even come close to comparing the the pinnacles of the genre, such as Martin's A song of Fire and Ice, and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. In short, if you're looking for some fantasy and you've already red LotR 20 million times, you may want to give this a try. recommended.
Rating: Summary: Terry Goodkind is a total genius. Review: Amazing. It's awesome.. so the terminology is a bit.. whacko, but the overall story is fantastic. It has a great start and continues like crazy. It's a truly amazing book, seriously, you won't be able to sleep at night because you'll wonder what happens next. While I was reading it, I didn't care if I was missing my favorite television shows to read it. I considered Wizard's first rule a perfect portable televsion: it's compact, there's never any reruns and no commercials. It's that gripping. However, there is too much major coincidence, which makes some of the story dead obvious, but there was something at the end which did manage to surprise.. And stun me with amazement at how small Terry Goodkind makes the world. It might as well be set in a city. Totally amazing book, I just can't emphasize that enough. In Wizard's First Rule, there's endless gore, charcters so evil it makes you wonder about the author, awesome suspense, great battle scenes... everything. It's perfect. Despite the fact that's it's a huge book, I wish it could be longer. Goodkind.. the guy's a genius.
Rating: Summary: The story goes TOO fast Review: I didn't like this book very much and I don't think I'll buy the next volumes of the series. The reason is only one: in my opinion, the story goes TOO fast and the characters are not well developed because they must keep up with it! So many things happen that you would expect the characters to be at least confused, but no! Richard discovers he is the wielder of the Sword and its power, he is going to be the strongest wizard in the world, he falls in love, his life changes completely... and all this he accepts in some ten pages and conforms to the changes without struggle! Maybe I was used to Jordan's Rand, but I don't like this Richard at all. Another (secondary) fault of Goodkind story is that you recognize some similarities between characters/events of "Wizard's first rule" and other books (the sorcerer with the deformed keeper of the Sword is almost the same as Brooks' two sorcerer sisters, the girl with that odd tool that tortures Richard is analogous to Jordan's Seanchans), but I insist this is only secondary. If you enjoyed Jordan and Martin, I don't think you will appreciate this book. If you like Ann Marston and similars, then buy this book too.
