Rating: Summary: the complete overview Review: -tries to shield past reviews with his pathetically small form- Do not listen to those clamoring about the cliffhanger and dragging storyline! Although these are two glaring attributes to this book, people are failing to mention the good side of this book, the things shannara fans take for granted. Storyline is compelling, dilogue is fantastic, and the characters are real, makng you think of other beloved characters such and Coll, Par, and Walker Boh (since walker boh is my all time fav. thats the driving reason I bought this book). Cliffhanger! roars the annoyed fans; I say a fantastic ending! Sciene is no place for shannara they moan; I say it gives the story dimension and scope. I am giving this book 4 stars because I must say the storyline drags near the begining, but it more then makes up for it in the end. Even if you are getting bored, just keep on reading. IT WILL GET BETTER. I also thought the keys too the islands and retrieving them could have had more obstacles and detail.Bottom Line, little cracks mar the surface of this book, but thats all they are, cracks. In general this book I cn honestly say ranks umong the the best of the shannara series. E mail me at spud3444@aol.com if you share my opinion or just wanna rant me out. Im open to both.
Rating: Summary: Worth reading. Review: I read the earlier Shannara books some time ago, whilst still at school. They had an impact on me, particularly 'The Elfstones of Shannara. 'Not having read much in the way of 'heroic fantasy' in a few years, I picked this up and was prepared not to be too interested. However, this is a well written novel, with strong characterisation and plot. It is nice to be lost in a world of magic and heroism ocassionally! If you want a bit of escapism over a weekend or holiday, this could be the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Clear and Easy to Read! Review: I really did like this book, it was different to the other Shannara books as it had more conversing with other characters. I could picture the scenes very clearly and easily in my mind. One thing I didn't really like in this book was that some of the characters that were involved in the first half of the book, in the second half were neglected, when I really wanted to know what they were doing/thinking. But then again there is other books to come out so maybe it will have more info on them later. But all in all a very good read!
Rating: Summary: AMAZING!!! SO WHEN'S THE NEXT ONE COMING OUT?? Review: WOW! Terry Brooks outdoes himself in the next instalment of the Shannara books. Plot twists and surprises help keep the reader on their toes. New characters (from your favourite old families) show depth and inventiveness. And some old favourites are along for the ride (hint hint: WALKER BOH). I just can't wait for the next book to come out!
Rating: Summary: Glad to see the Shannara Legend continues... Review: I could not put this book down. The storyline was excellent and kept me enthralled. I would recommend this book to everyone who loves fantasy fiction. The ending made me crazy especially when I realized that I have to wait for the next book. I anxiously await the sequel. This author just keeps getting better...
Rating: Summary: Back once again by popular demand Review: Yes chaps, the Shannara series is back once again. Set in a time 1000 years on from the Talismans of Shannara, we join Walker Boh, the still living druid, and his new found friends in an epic adventure to rediscover the magic of the Old World. Brooks is back, and this time with style. The Voyage of the Jerle Shannara is perhaps some of the best that Brooks has published. An intertwining storyline, with many pitfalls and tricks means that it is the sort of book that you will not be able to put down. Even though the storyline is perhaps slow to start off, it soon lifts off into an all exciting adventure, with a very unexpected ending. We find out the secrets about the characters, including the Isle Witch, the main enemy of the story. Brooks connects this book back to his Shannara series very well, which means that he hasn't lost his touch. This book is definately worth buying if you can get your hands on it.
Rating: Summary: THIS SHOULD GET BETTER Review: Well, I've been reading Terry's books since the sixth grade (so for about 17 years), and perhaps for that reason, I have a rather biased opinion on any of his works. I just love the guy's work. I can't say that I enjoyed this latest installment as much as any of the previous Shannara novels, but I remain hopeful that the next one will be considerably better. I really wish that the whole "airship" stuff never started...too much science that really hasn't been thought thru to convince me that it has a place in this series. I would have been happy if the ships just sailed on the water...keep it simple and the focus on the magic! Allanon would have done it better! Walker's cool, but I felt like he needed to be a stronger presence overall. Again, I'm looking forward to the next installment for help! I'm rolling with it for now. If you're a first time Terry Brooks reader, do yourself a favor and buy the Sword Of Shannara rignt now!! Start with that and let Terry finish this series before you get discouraged...
Rating: Summary: Is it magic or science? Review: I have always enjoyed Terry Brook's works, beginning with Magic Kingdon for Sale, through all of the Shannara books. However, and this may seeming to be nit-picking when accepting premises upon which fantasy novels depend, the use of science in the mechanism of the airships stood out as inconsistent, especially when those sophisticated machines had only arrows and spears and rocks to defend themselves. The book seems to be leading to a discovery of science, which no longer exists, in a world of magic, but the existence of science in the mechanism of the airships just throws the entire story line into confusion.
Rating: Summary: Exciting new adventure Review: Ilse Witch is a fantastic jumping-off point for Brook's new series. I found the characters and the plot to be the usual Brooks' fair; the real surprise was in the prose. Brooks has never written better than this: his settings jump off the page at you, as do his descriptions of action sequences, and his dialogue is just fabulous. The great writing (which has been absent now and then in Brooks' work, although his plots and characters have ALWAYS been good) really knocks the book up a notch. I am also glad to see that perhaps us readers of the Shannara series may finally get the answers to what happened to the "old" world (our own). In the rest of the series, the old world is only talked about every now and then, and glimpses of its ruins rarely seen (remember the mechanical spider in Sword of Shannara?). Well, it looks as though this whole trilogy will be set around answering these burning questions. Oh, and wow, what a cliffhanger. With "Isle Witch," Terry Brooks has truly re-invigorated a series that I thought beyond help. Great book.
Rating: Summary: Wait till the series is finished.... Review: I love Terry Brooks. Well, I guess I don't 'LOVE' Terry Brooks but I sure do enjoy his books. So, it is with heavy heart that I say that I didn't enjoy this book. I honestly think he could have done it in 50 pages and not 450. The story just is stretched out so far that it really gets dull. On top of that, it is not even a self-contained story. It ends without ANY resolution at all. It reminded me of the Lord of the Rings (but doesn't all of Brook's writing). Anyways, I can say that it is worth the read but I'd wait until the whole series is finished. If you don't it would be like reading the first 5 chapters and then waiting another year to read the next 5.
