Rating: Summary: I hope Robert Jordan gets the message Review: The series unfortunately, is becoming much like a daytime soap opera. It's unfortunate because he has so much material available to draw from that there really is no need for the characters to stay on any one minor plot for too long. The story started out like a winning racehorse right out of the gate. The horse can still run like the wind forever but the jockey is getting tired. When "The World of Robert Jordan's, The Wheel of Time," came out it gave so many things to look forward to. There are whole other continents and people that can be written about in this series that there is no need to linger about in the same places. Jordan could easily have the characters Traveling to the other regions and creating whole new interesting adventures without the fear of running out of story sub-plots, yet I don't feel that he really needs to explain everything either. Mystery is a cornerstone of all fantasy. It is what makes the fantastical immortal and enduring. Regardless of how Jordan handles the rest of the series until its end, he has shown his genius. I suppose a story is much like a child, as it grows it becomes harder to handle all the things it is getting into. Hell, and as far as this one goes, it's definitely a teenager. Maybe he needs to listen to his creativity and take more time. I know that sounds crazy considering the ever lengthening spans between each book, but I wouldn't mind waiting "a little" longer for better, for what he showed us he could do with the earlier books. Of course just as long as he does finish the story some day, so we can all have a drink and thank him for the memories.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant, Engrossing, Keep 'em Comin' Review: Anyone who read this book and thought it was anything less than the best book ever written by anyone, anywhere at anytime should seriously consider seeking psychiatric help. Robert Jordan is the best the genre has to offer to date and The Wheel of Time series is only getting better. The characters are fully fleshed out and totally engaging. The plot lines are intricate and so vast that many people just can't comprehend them and as such get easily befuddled. So much so that they fail to see the genius that is The Wheel of Time. I recommend reading the books multiple times so that you can come to terms with these facts. I for one am very disappointed by the three and a half star rating that this book has recieved, obviously these people wouldn't know a great book if it hit them in their behinds. I call on all true fans of Robert Jordan and the fantasy genre in general to rate this book as it deserves, with five stars all the way.
Rating: Summary: Series starting to lose some of its magic... Review: I'm a big fan of this series. I started to read this back in the early 90s. There are two main problems with this series right now: 1) Jordan writes them too slowly. I can't believe its been almost 10 years since I started reading the Wheel of Time. 2) The plot of the story moves way too slow. Jordan seems to have tried to correct the second problem in book 9. In previous books (books 6-8) he had 50 different plots and subplots running throughout the story. Who could remember all the names? There must at least be 100-200 different characters. The books dragged and by the end of the story we only learned a small detail about the main plot (Rand "The Dragon REBORN"). In book 9, Jordan seems to stick with only the top 4-5 main themes. The story line runs faster... The other main problem is that this series has become too predictable and stagnant. In the first 3-4 books, action was the common theme. Plus, Jordan used to write the greatest war/fight scenes. I recall in early books, Jordan would describe in detail about different fighting styles. I could basically hear the clang of steel as I read the novel. Now, he battle scenes are routine and, in fact, quite boring. This series has become less action and more planning. If you've read the first 8 books, I recommend reading this book as well. It's not bad... just not as good as book 2 or 3.
Rating: Summary: Jordan has set a new standard for boring Review: Jordan unfortunately has sold out and it seems is only interested in the money. Another boring book that is tiresome reading, i'd say about the last 30 pages were worth reading. Whats next 700 pages on how the sea folk build ships. Someone e-mail me when the last book comes out, maybe in about 20 years. I'd ask for Jordan to e-mail me but I couldn't handle 600 pages of boring e-mail.
Rating: Summary: Excelent, but... Review: First, I'd like to say I enjoyed this book a lot. There are only two points I did not like, although one of them I'm still not sure what to think of. The first of them is the extent of the parts of the book dedicated specifically to Perrin and Mat. I seem to remember that when the 3 major characters' plot lines started separating, the chapters dedicated to those plots were well distributed along the book. However, now they're all together in a block and that can be very tiring. I found myself wanting to skip the chapters about Perrin and Faile at the beginning of the book because its plot wasn't so interesting and it was way to long. The second point is about the lenghth of the whole series. I know many readers have been complaining about this and I must say I have to add my complaint to theirs (Mr. Jordan, if you ever get to read these reviews, please listen to us). I read in an interview with Jordan that he plans on AT LEAST 3 more books. That would make more than 15 years of Wheel of Time books being released and I must say that a lot of people will have given up before the last book comes out, which is a pity. On the other hand, I kind of have to aggree with its lenghth. With so many plots and subplots left hanging, there is not a chance to finish the series in less than 3 books and I certainly want to see EVERYTHING worked out (I have not spent hours of my life with this novel to see something still dangling loose at the end!). Besides, the long description he gives of places, peoples and scenes does add to the versimilitude of the series. Well, all in all, there are good sides and bad sides for everything. That's it. If you like the Wheel, read this book because something very important happens in it, and avery fan will love to see it happening. The last scene is its strongest and most thrilling part. Go on and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: I think I hurt my neck... Review: I must say that my physical therapy bill will be higher this month. My neck kept streching after falling asleep after each paragraph. After falling asleep many times trying to finish the book, I finally gave up reading and tried memorizing the dictionary. Doing that put me just a bit worse off, so I went back to the lesser evil and made it to chapter two. Ok ok. I'm exaggerating a bit, but only a little. Let look a the players: Mat - back in the game. Egwene - out of the ballpark. If Lanfear is back, in disguise, where is Morraine...who? Zzzz... Sorry...I seemed to have dozed off again. I see that the book ended. Rand cleansed all evil from the male side of the power...in what seemed about fifteen minutes. I think it look longer for him to get from his home to the village in the first chapters of the first book. Has someone lost the will to write? Or, is someone spending a little too much time on the other series. Maybe he should sell the series to Mad Magazine and let those 'creative' writers have at it. There probably would have been more action in it. Wouldn't you love to see Spy-vs-Spy go up against the Chosen? Probably would have seen more action! Seriously, I was very disappointed by the results of this book. The few loose ends it ties up, the strange timeline, missing characters like Loial, etc. really turned me off. Then I thought...maybe this was originally part of the last book. Maybe there was no real good point to break it up. Maybe RJ needed the money and figured we weren't smart enough to figure it out. He got mine...never again. Did anyone see the Gore-Bush campaign? It was more interesting...
Rating: Summary: getting back to his better style Review: I've been reading Robert Jordan since i was in Jr. high, and soon i will be a senior in college. this new book ran much of the way like the last few, which isnt all that good, and somwhat depressing, but the last 100 pages made up for the last 3 books alltogether. The last pages are much like the style Jordan had for books 1, 3, 4, and in parts of 5. (book 2 was good but was much like books 7 and 8) and that kept me reading the last 100 pages straight through.
Rating: Summary: MINDBOGGLINGLY HORRIBLE Review: I read this book because I have read them all and must find eventual absolution, even at the price of extreme boredom, but after the last few books I had few expectations. Well, I should have had NO expectations. This is even worse than Path of Daggers....This book goes on ad nauseum about nothing...Perrin doing nothing, Elayne doing nothing and plotting about nothing, Matt doing at least a little something, and Rand doing a bit, as well as doing his concubines. Unfortunately, to get to anything that is interesting, you have to wade through page after page of useless descriptions and dialogue that seem to be there only to take up space. They don't really matter. After the first painful 200 pages, I started just skipping most of it and just reading parts that seemed pertinent, and even most of them were not....
Rating: Summary: What's Everyone Crying About? Review: The reviews I've been reading complain that Jordan is losing steam. I think that the books are still very good, it's just difficult to fit so many plots and subplots into one text and still make it light enough to lift and carry from one room to another. Granted it seems like an eternity between sequels, but in my opinion, it's well worth the wait!
Rating: Summary: Good, but not enough to buy the hardback next time.. Review: It's much better than the last two books, this one at least keeps your attention, and keeps the pages turning. Hopefully, Jordan can finish this with as much impact as he started.. Mat Cauthon's sexual adventures are quite humorous. He's everybody's favorite tramp, and should occupy a signifigant portion of each book along with Rand, ElayneEgweneMinAviendhaNynaeve(they should only get one portion together, it's boring), and various Forsaken and Darkfriends. Two very intriguing characters that don't get enough attention are Cadsuane and Lan.. I think both need a real battle so we can measure the strength of each against the other heroes in the book. This looks like it may be a 15 book series ,if Jordan lives to be 120!! A mediocre Jordan is still in the top 5% of all fantasy, but save your hardback cash for the top 1%, maybe Jordan will get back to that level with the next book.
