Rating: Summary: Boring, boring boring -just get on with it Robert! Review: The least the author could do for us hapless readers (why oh why do I keep on reading them) is to supply a decent and updated cast of characters for each new book. Frankly I've forgotten who is who and why etc etc. The timeline is depressingly slow, a day's reading and barely a day has gone by in the book. There is such a thing as too much detail. My only consolation is that I have never bothered to acutally buy any of the books - accessing them from my local library instead. With Path of Daggers I find I am forcing myself to finish it. Dull as ditchwater - I really don't think I could be bothered to read anymore.
Rating: Summary: Jordan vs. Tolkien Review: Looking at things in the whole, Tolkien is a much more wholesome and enjoyable writer. Tolkien doesn't write books, he writes tales and stories. His world and characters are based on age-old mythology and resembles the heroism and near-literary-perfectness of such classics as Beowulf. His stories do not waste time on insignificant facts, and when reading them, you get the sense that the author is speaking of the history of a wellknown world. Tolkien paced his writing extroardinarily and had quite a few surprise elements, which Mr. Jordan's writings really seem to lack. You know exactly what he is leading up to and you are just waiting to finally get to the point where it actually finally happens. It often surprises me that the author of this series is not a woman. As someone previously mentioned, a lot of the scenes involving Elayne, Egwene, Nynaeve, and the other Aes Sedai seem like a slumber party. They giggle and gossip like school girls! Although, I find this mildly entertaining, I can only imagine what pleasure Mr. Jordan derives from this. The constant introducing of new characters and plots makes one think Mr. Jordan is writing for a television soap opera. One could say this book (along with the rest of the series) deserves a place on both the fantasy and romance shelves. The endless descriptions of insignificant things is a major turn off to Jordan's writings. While Tolkien would in most cases not even mention any inn servants or the dress the inn keeper is wearing, Mr. Jordan draws out their descriptions to near chapter length. In the end, if you're a female, you'll probably love Mr. Jordan's writings. The men are strong and hard, the social class of his world make the women even more powerful than the men, and there are dress descriptions galore. If you're a male, probably the only thing you could get out of this series is the inside look at what a female slumber party might look like.
Rating: Summary: Enough is enough Review: I started reading the Wheel of Time series in 1994, and I have remained a devout follower ever since. Robert Jordan has a gift with words, but now, even his gift is floundering. The tale is old and stale. Ever since his fifth book, nothing has really happened. This series was supposed to end in eight, but now I do not know if it will ever end but I must say that this serious is like a sick dog--it needs to be put to death. I doubt that I'll bother with the series now. If you are interested in good writing, there are several talented authors out there. Robin Hobb, Terry Goodkind, Elizibeth Haydon, JV Jones. . . Robert Jordan is a good author, but the tale is old and stale, and we learned absolutely nothing in this latest installment. It seems that he is more interested in making money than writing good books.
Rating: Summary: SCARY BUT WELL WORTH THE WAIT Review: Phew-WEE! After a long, stressful wait, it is finally here (and has been for several months now). The Path of Daggers is yet another brilliant installment in the fantastic series, the Wheel of Time...but it scares me. Why? Weeeell, Rand and his lovely Asha'man are struggling with the taint. I don't want Rand to die! Several of his Asha'man have turned out to be deserters! Argh, the pain of betrayal! Elayne and co. have used the Bowl of the Winds, and pretty soon it's a full-on storm fest - and about time too! Where is Mat? There's no sign of him here. This book is weird, because it sort of doesn't seem to conclude itself, or even begin itself. You know in previous books how there's a landmark event that closes the particular chapter? For instance, one of them ends with Aes Sedai swearing fealty to Rand - it's like a revolution in this world. But this book seems to leave things hanging. I get the irritating feeling that things aren't resolved, and that it's just a collection of events put down on paper. Am I crazy or what? One exciting thing is what's happening between MOrgase and Tallanvor. Perhaps she's finally getting a brain?! Anyway, I am obsessed with this series, so as usual I'd have to say that, since Jordan's writing skill has not degenerated in any visible way, this book gets five stars. You'll love it, but then, that's from someone who loves everything Jordan has written relating to his series.
Rating: Summary: DEPRESSING BUT NECESSARY; WAY TOO SHORT Review: Ah, how I wish it would never end. This series is the BEST, but it always ends FAR too prematurely. What is happening with Mat? Where are the Forsaken? Oh no, what will happen to Faile? It's a great book, as all WOT books seem to be, but now I'm hanging desperately for the ninth edition, and I just KNOW that's gonna be a disappointment too - not long enough. Why did I say depressing? - because of some things that happen with Randy boy and the rest of his sexy little Asha'man. Is Taim REALLY Demandred (not that they said he was - it's just that I've heard speculation from some various sources...) Surely it can't be. Anyway, this book is totally wicked, but I'm really hanging out for a number of things: -mORGASE AND Tallanvor (the spunk) to get it on. -Rand to find a cure for the taint on saidin. -Egwene to kick Elaida's butt. -Mat to meet his Seanchan Daughter of the Nine Moons and fall in lurve (would serve him right, the male prostitute!) -Robert JOrdan to announce that there will in fact be another ten books (maybe twenty...) before the series is complete. On that note, I will leave you all to get off your arses and start reading!
Rating: Summary: Unreadable Review: It is astounding how this author has taken an interesting, fascinating and imaginative story and turned it into a boring piece of drivel. If this series was a horse, it would have been shot long ago.
Rating: Summary: What HAve I gotten Myself into!!!!!? Review: I love this series!!!! I read book four cause I thought it would be good and got totally hooked!! I read books 6/7/8 in one awesome WOT marathon and am eagerly awaiting book #(. Now i find out RJ likes two years to write a book!!! Im o author but jeez!! I dont think I can wait that long. Come on have Rand fight the Dark one and get killed by that neverhealing wound in his side already! Im dying here, two years for a book, get to typin' RJ
Rating: Summary: What People Don't Understand About PoD Review: It seems that most of the reviewers have been looking at this book in the wrong way. This is not an action book. It is not a book of climax in the series. This entire book is denouement, rising action. Jordan is setting up for an explosive 9th and 10th books that will totally blow everyone away. I agree, however, that the plot lines have become diffused, but this is merely for effect. Does everyone remember the Great Hunt? Everyone was all over the place in most of the book, but at the very end they ALL ended up in Falme. I am confident that RJ will employ this literary device of near confusion to make the next few installments of the series an amazing climax of chance and intense battle action with Rand kicking plenty of @$$ in the end of each book. Book Nine will probably be roughly 800-1000 pages long, a Lord of Chaos sized book, with at least as much action as the Shadow Rising or the Fires of Heaven.
Rating: Summary: The plot does not seem to be going anywhere Review: I have read all the Wheel of Time books now and have found them entertaining reading up to number seven (Crown of Swords), However it now seems as if the series is never going to end. There are a lot of loose ends hanging around and it looks sa if it will take a further three books to tie them up.L Ron Hubbard also wrote a a ten book series (Mission Earth) and the last three where an agony to read. I hope Robert Jordan is not going to put us through the same pain. In this book we get to see the main character way to little and it seems as if he(Rand Al Thor)is stagnating. In the first few books everything happened at a fast pace now it just seems to drag along. I would love it if the author could rap this series up.
Rating: Summary: Booorrrinnnggggg...... Review: Time to wrap up the series Bob. Your main characters are getting stale and the ones you are introducing are lame. The plot is too long and again very boring. I love long stories but this is ridiculous. Lets bring it to a close huh? If I could give this no stars I would. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
