Rating: Summary: Not able to stand on its own Review: One of the maxims of a great novel, even a novel in a series, is an ability to stand on its own feet without the support of previous or later works. The first 5 books did this easily, The Path of Daggers does not. It is clear that Jordan has much to say, but his prose is getting sloppy, derivitive of himself, and is not engaging. I am not a writer, but have sympathy for the creative process, so if Mr. Jordan wants to end the series short of a climax, he should issue a press statement and let people know. Otherwise, return to tighter, more dynamic style written for the earlier books. This for his publisher, I WILL NOT BUY ANYMORE NEW BOOKS WRITTEN BY MR. JORDAN UNTIL HE ONCE AGAIN PROVES HIS ABILITY TO WRITE. I wanted to return Path of Daggers, but I'm willing to give him a chance. NO MORE HARDCOVERS, I'M NOT KIDDING!!
Rating: Summary: The lowest point in the entire history of the wheel.. Review: I have been a reader since first buying the Hardcover back in Feb. 1990. This book is the worst in the entire series, leaving many people wondering where this all is going. He was definitaly tired when writing this one, as happens when you write such detail for so long. You can get some info by periodically calling TOR, where you can reach an automated Jordan line. He was supposed to write the entire series in 7 books, but with the success of the series, both he and the publishers had a change of heart. It takes him about 2 years per novel to write, and he was taking a sabatical a short time ago. (gasp!) There is hope! He states he is growing enthused about the series again, and hopes to tie off some lose ends within the next few books. Hang in there, the next few should be a little more satisfying than this one!
Rating: Summary: Great book Review: Robert Jordan has got to be one of the best writers out there. Read the other books in the series first, or you won't get what's going on. If you do, you'll be hooked!
Rating: Summary: BORING!!! Review: I have read all 8 of his books and I think they're awesome, but this book has to be the most boring I've ever read! RJ needs to hurry some things up a bit - it's the exact same as the COS except a few new things happening in different places. Nothing gets solved except that they use the Bowl of Winds or whatever that was. Where was Mat?!? Don't leave me hanging, RJ - get the next book out soon!
Rating: Summary: An excellent build up Review: Not much happens in this book, but that's only because Jordan is building up the plot for the later books in the series. It may seem boring now, but the payback later in the series will be worth it. However, Mat needs to return, as he is the most interesting character.
Rating: Summary: Hoping the series will never end Review: Oh no this book is not to long, the series is not at all at a hold don't be too hasty. I awaited the sequel with impatience. Mr. Jordan created a whole world and he describes his world with so much precision that you are taken into it. He builds up his characters and if that takes to much time for you, then read a comic book. This is great.
Rating: Summary: I HIT ON A GREAT WAY TO READ THE WOT BOOKS! Review: I am on book 7 and have written reviews of them all here. Reviews which appear to have pretty much the same complaint as everyone else: the first four or five books were good, but... o The last two or three are horendously boring. o Jordan's portrayal of women is reprehensible, making them vindictive, judgemental, arrogant, ambitious, petty, spiteful, manipulative, etc., etc., etc. Basically the worst of all human qualities, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever! o Jordan just keeps opening up more and more plot lines without resolving any of them. The series would hold my attention more if he resolved some lines, even if he opened up others. o Much of what is in the books has become repetitive and redundant. How many times do we have to be told about je-i-to, or that Matt's wife is a jealous shrike, or that filling oneself with the one power feels great, but the male half is tainted, etc. o I have really lost interest in any of the characters or the outcomes of their trials. But I have hit upon a great way to read these books without so much frustration, waste of my time or drainage on my spiritual energy. I only read the first line of each paragraph, unless it has dialogue, in which case I read the whole thing. The books go MUCH faster that way, and though I may be missing some stuff, I guarantee you I don't miss much. At the end of book 7 I still know exactly what it going on, but I haven't spent so much time and energy getting there. Try it! It works!
Rating: Summary: Get on with it- I waited two years for this Review: I have been with this story from the beginning, and have enjoyed it. However, there seems to be a lack of direction in the last 2 novels. I like the progressin of the characters, the intrigue, the slowly evoling storyline, everything, but this has stoppped progressing and now just drags. There are parts of this book that are entertaining, but this book could have been condensed into a few chapters, rather than a 600 page book. Please, Mr. Jordan, continue evolving the story, so that I can finish it before my time here is done ( i only have 20-30 years left)
Rating: Summary: Sales ranking 692 Review: And that is exactly what the publisher wants. This book reminds me of those tele-marketing products, which at first, seemed all good and interesting and after buying only to find the horrible mistake that you have made. Alas, I am but one of the many victims fooled by RJ, again and again.
Rating: Summary: No major direction changes but... Review: I can't believe that readers expect all the books to be at the same pace and plot level. With this book I sense a plot build up that will boil over in future releases. Mark my words, when this series gets to book twelve, PoD, will be remembered as a turning point. This whole series deserves 5 stars.
