Rating: Summary: BEAUTIFULLY DONE AND AN EXQUISITE READ! Review: HAVING JUST FINISHED "PATH OF DAGGERS" NOT TEN MINUTES AGO, I JUST HAD TO GIVE UP MY THANKS TO MY LITERARY HERO! AS IN PAST BOOKS, JORDAN HAD TO MOVE AWAY FROM ONE MAJOR CHARACTER TO FOCUS ON SOME DETAIL WORK, WHICH IS A BRILLIANT WAY OF HANDLING AN OVER RUN STORY. BUT A FEW QUESTIONS: 1. LOIAL. THE POOR GUY IS RUNNING ALL OVER CREATION FOR HIS NOTES, BUT IS NOT MENTIONED IN THIS BOOK. WHY NOT? 2. THE SEANCHAN. I KNOW THAT MAT IS ALIVE SOMEWHERE AND THAT HE IS GOING TO HAVE TO MARRY THE DAUGHTER OF THE NINE MOON a.k.a THE EMPRESS OF THE SEANCHAN, BUT TO WHAT THAT EVERYONE HAD THOUGHT DEAD CAME BACK. IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE CADSUANE, AS YOU WOULD HAVE EVERYONE BELIEVE, OR IS MOIRAINE COMING BACK FROM THE DEAD? I KNOW YOU WON'T REVEAL YOUR STORY, BUT ANYONE WITH AN OPINION IS WELCOME TO WRITE. 4. MORIDIN. IS THIS GUY THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO CAN USE THE POWER COMING DIRECTLY FROM THE DARK ONE OR ARE THERE MORE? WHERE HAS HE BEEN FOR THE LAST THREE THOUSAND YEARS? IS HE AS MAD NOW AS HE'D BE IF HE WAS USING SAIDIN? THATS ALL I HAVE BUT ANYONE, PLEASE GIVE ME A RELEASE FROM MY WHEEL OF TIME CAGE!
Rating: Summary: Not what I was expecting! Review: Path of Daggers was a supreme dissapointment to me. As this series drags on, Jordan's plot developement slows as his verbose detail laden prose continues to balloon! I was expecting more from this book. I am an avid fantasy and sci-fi reader and have been a huge fan of Robert Jordans since I was first introduced to the Wheel of Time series, but now I find myself backing away. This latest book contained even more of the ever increasing amount of the men "mooning" over the women and vice versa than ever before. This eighth 500 page plus novel read more like a soap opera than any other book I have read in quite some time. Don't get me wrong, I was still engrossed by the book, I read the entire thing in one sitting, but when I was through, I was left wanting MUCH more. I guess that's quite a bit of the mastery of a serialized story like this, but come on already! If the heros haven't saved the world in almost five thousand pages, I think its time to either wrap things up or move on much more quickly than this 8th novel seemed to. After reading Path of Daggers, I can't help but think that Robert Jordan will still be writing this series when he dies! (may it be many years from now)
Rating: Summary: The book stands only by support of the whole. Review: Of course Robert hasn't lost his touch. Of course the series is the greatest ever. But "halting" is a very good way to describe this book. I can't help but feel that Robert should have waited until he could build some sort of resolution before publishing The Path of Daggers.
Rating: Summary: Good, but... Review: I rushed to my local bookstore to buy Path of Daggers, and...it was a real disappointment. The characters and story all seem to be stuck in an endless holding pattern. The author barely mentions entire plots and some of the main characters, and spends most of the book on the least interesting storylines. I especially missed the humor of the other eight books. Path of Daggers said less in 591 pages than most of the other books did in half that. I sincerely hope that Mr. Jordan isn't running out of steam, or ideas.
Rating: Summary: Just a Comment about reviewing... Review: I do have Path of Daggers, arrived at my door 12:00 on the 20th :) thankyou Amazon... but just a word about reviews... Ive been looking through many, and it seems that everyone whom wants to get lost in a different world, gave the book 5 stars, and the people whom just want a story, or expect it to be written at the same level as Dolstoyevsky (cant spell that one of my head, sorry), or tolstoy, They Gave it about 1-3 stars... Robert Jordon isnt one of the best writers I have read. Ask most anyone inclined to great literary and they will consider most all Fantasy 'schlock'. But thats not what WOT is about, its the only book of its kind I have read (though ive only read Tolkien, Eddings, Feist, Williams, and Jones). Its simply beyond an 'epic'. It truly is an entire world. although it was a rather quick read for me, having read books 1-7 in about 40 days, if you just want a story this ISNT the book for you. You shouldnt bother starting it, for it would be a waste of time. But if you love fantasy, and want to feel apart of a different world I believe that no fantasy can compare to WOT.
Rating: Summary: Where is the rest of this book? Review: I think Mr. Jordan forgot to finish this book. After a wait of over a year I had high expectations. I received the book Tuesday afternoon and left work excited. When I finished the book at 2:00 am I was still waiting for the good part. It does have some good background, but it is unusual for one of these books to ignore a central character (Matt Cauthon) and to have so little achieved by the other characters. I sincerely hope book 9 returns to Mr. Jordan's previous standard of excellence.
Rating: Summary: As usual Review: Jordan's always done well. How could we expect less? It was a little short for me, though, but I still loved it. And looks like I'm first to write a review. It's life in a box. A very big box.
Rating: Summary: Again A Winding Path Review: Jordan, clearly, enjoys strategy and machination, which is one of the fine points of his World of Time series. But, in his attempt to develop for the reader the deep structure of plots that motivate his multitude of characters, he fails, sometimes, in the more basic task of advancing the plot of his story. It is a balance, true, and in some volumes he strikes it better than in others. Book 6, Lord of Chaos, for example, was clearly the least profitable of the series in this regard; Book 7, Crown of Thorns, was slightly better, though less so than any of the first 5. I rate The Path of Daggers ("POD")just higher than No. 7, though still I prefer the first 5.That said, the events that do unfold in POD are, as they are throughout the series, clever and unexpected and, therefore, highly entertaining, and the expanding universe he has set in motion appears ready to begin its necessary blue shift soon. Further, Jordan in this book has set aside his Homer-like convention of repeating background information with each new occurance of an older trope--making POD a cleaner, more enjoyable read. And I'm sure I'm not the only fan who bought his copy the day it was released and finished it that same evening. So, glacial pace of the series notwithstanding, the book is well worth the read. But the prospect of waiting another year and a half for No. 9 can bring small pleasure, particularly--if it is anything like the last 3--in light of the tiny steps it will make toward resolution.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I've finally read the latest in the wheel of time series. For incurable Jordan addicts such as myself, it's mandatory reading, but... It does NOT resolve any significant issues. Yes, The weather is repaired (but we all saw that coming in the last volume) It seems that Jordan gives us 500 pages of writers' block. The overall plot doesn't really advance. When I finished it, I felt that nothing had gotten done; that Jordan was saving the answers and resolutions for the inevitable 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and probably 20th volumes.
