Rating: Summary: Is Jordan Selling Us Out? Review: I hate to say it, but this book is among the worst I have ever read. I have avidly read and loved every word of all seven of the other books over and over, but will probably never waste my time with this miserable book again.Only one or two plot lines were closed off, and a dozen new ones opened. When will this series end? I was hoping for a good, fulfilling close by book 12, but now see that Mr. Jordan is milking this for all it is worth. If the next book is similar to this, or takes as long to come out, I will give up on him.
Rating: Summary: Realistic fantasy?Oh,my! Review: I loved the WoT series.I didn't think it was special when I read EotW but books 2-4 were great.FoH was a bit slow, but then...Lord of Chaos.Nothing happened in the first 500 or so pages and CoS was even worse.PoD made me believe that this is not going to be the greatest fantasy ever written.Tolkien knew when to stop. And as for the complaints that in his books the good guys were all too perfect...Is there a woman in WoT who gets along with men?I don't think so.Min has turned from a charming tomboy to a stupid bimbo who can't even think when Rand is near.Nynaeve was one of my favorite characters in the first books but now she spends all her time tugging at her braid and Elayne,Egwene and Aviendha aren't so much better. The Aes Sedai are a joke. How did they ever get to be so powerful if the only thing they do is argue with each other?Despite all that I'm still going to continue reading these books. There is so little good fantasy around and I have to admit I'll read the books if only to get mad at the characters. But I'm borrowing them from my library and buying something better with my money. I really don't believe book 9 is going to be spectacular...that's what they predicted about PoD after CoS.Ucchan the Martial Spatula Girl
Rating: Summary: Nothing Happens Review: The main problem I, like many other have with this book is that nothing happens. P.S. The only reason I gave it one star is you can't give it less P.P.S. For those of you who give this book 4 and 5 stars, think just about this book and not the series. If you only read this book by Jordan would you ever read anything by him again. I don't think so.
Rating: Summary: Jordan can do better, this book was an anti-climax. Review: Jordan focused too much on setting the scene of this book, which was done already in the last 7 books. It was too slow and there wasn't enough to hold my intrest for the whole book, however the ninth book seems promising as there was a lot of build up towards an amazing amount of action.
Rating: Summary: Frustrating to the max Review: The wheel of Time series is by far the best series I have ever read, But this last book is completely frustrating. I expected this book to contain a lot more and actually end some of the mysteries involving the characters. but for the most part it contains none of this. I waited 2+ years for virtually nothing. Don't get me wrong I will be one of the first people to purchase the next book when it comes out (hopefully not another 2 years), but it better not be as stagnent as the last two. thanks. you could e-mail me if you wish to dicuss any thought on the thousands of mysteries involving this series. I absolutely love to discuss them
Rating: Summary: Show me the money! Review: I had my suspicions after the last poorly drafted WOT book, but this pathetic storyline cinched it. Robert Jordan is in it for the money folks! This book had at least 800 pages of pure fluff. Guess how many times the leader of the knitting circle gave people a stern look and they quivered. If you guessed less than 100, you aren't even in the ballpark. These books have no drama because Jordan is extending the story with claptrap to drag out the WOT and provide additional dinero. I have two regrets: 1) I encouraged him to continue milking his fans by buying this Path of Dull Daggars; 2) This site doesn't allow a zero star review which this book deserves. I will never buy another Jordan book again. Do NOT buy this book!
Rating: Summary: Relax and enjoy the cruise Review: Crown of Swords cost Jordan his spot at the peak of fantasy through its slowness, this book repeats the same sins. Rather than the neat ideas which flowed early on the book gets bogged down in minute plotting among minor characters. As usual, the immortal central cast have close runs with death and survive. A couple of darkfriends die or get tortured. The usual gang of braid pullers mince and act stupidly around men (and Jordan is really flattering men here if he thinks we have the power to make women act that way). The usual learn-by-rote quotes every book has get their run. But this book is still enjoyable, just not something to take seriously anymore. Just sit back and enjoy the ride rather than stocking up on missed expectations or flaws in the writing. A couple of surprises here and there as well, and anyway noone's likely to stop who's gotten this far. Wait for the paperback or borrow it from the library. This book crawled through a barrage of needless descriptions and details about the set of this or that characters chins or whatever, an agonising pace which makes me think the last battle is getting further off not sooner. But it was still fairly entertaining, and RJ himself acknowledged it was time to pick up the pace some. Just as well becuase at 1 book every 2-and-a-bit years it was getting to be a worry that the series would never finish (3-4 books at least left!). RJ is near 60 and has enough dollars now for a good retirement so p'raps we can take him at his word on this one.
Rating: Summary: Second half of a good book Review: Having just read book 8 (only published in Australia last week despite being out in USA and UK in October - Xmas market??) I am more positive than I expected to be. I had been unable to stop myself from reading early critiques of the book and was ready to be disappointed. Instead I found the old enthusiasm coming back. My view is that Books 7 & 8 together make one good book - total page count not much different to several earlier volumes. If we had got the pair together 2 years ago I believe we would have had a good reaction from the readers. Instead we have had 6 volumes in 6 - 7 years ( including the time to write Books 1 & 2) then 1 real volume in the past 4. This is what is causing the annoyance. Has RJ got into a comfort zone? Lots of cash coming in hence less impetus to write? Overall - Amazing series, good book but too slow.
Rating: Summary: A Let Down Review: Jordan has delivered in the past. But my jaw dropped at the let down in this book. Looks like they are just trying to soak the series for extra money. Jordan began incredibly well, but really dropped the ball with Path of Daggers. It read flat and linear. I hope 9 is better, but if it took 2 years to write this, I'm not holding my breath. I actually went out and bought 2 copies of vol 1 for some friends before finishing this one. After finishing it, I wouldn't have. If the book were alone and not part of a great epic, I would have given it 1 star. So Path of Daggers gets 1 star, and an extra +1 pity star because the other books were good.
Rating: Summary: Is that all there is? Review: I am reminded of the song, author unknown, whose title I am using as a one line summary. Definitely not worth the price nor the wait, If as I, you pester the clerks at the special order desks as I have done trying to find out when the next installment in the series is due. I expected more from an author who definitely has given what I want in past episodes; a large complex alternate reality. I hope for better in the future.
