Rating: Summary: The Most Boring Book I have ever read! Review: I had this book assigned to me for Honors English summer reading. It was very boring and completely pointless. I couldn't understand what anyone was saying and it contained way too much nonfiction about knights and armor. I wish I could've given this book 0 stars because that's how utterly dumb it was. It reminded me of a more boring medevil Jerry Springer episode. There were way too many characters and everyone had the same or similar names. For example: There were three women named Elaine, and four brothers named Gawaine, Agravaine, Geheris, and Gaerth (I never could distinguish one from another) It took me forever to read and all the time I just kept saying to myself, "Just five more pages, just five more pages" I used to think that King Arthur and his knights of the round table would be interesting until this book was assigned to me. It was horribly confusing and unoriginal. The book didn't even have what I think would be the most interesting section, where King Arthur dies. I would recommend this book to all of my worst enemies, and only hope they have as much fun reading it as I did. I wish I would've just bought the cliffnotes, so as to avoid this insult to literature. Unless you enjoy books that are uninteresting and plotless, I suggest you read a more interesting book such as Harry Potter (J.K Rowling) or Where the Red Fern Grows (Wilson Rawls).
Rating: Summary: Somewhat Disappointing Review: I greatly anticipated reading this books because I thought it would be a modern and humorous retelling of the King Arthur story. While White does do an excellent job of modernizing the story and keeping it readable and fun, in some ways he seems to reduce it all into a horrible joke. The story is dumbed-down way too much - the character of grown King Arthur that White creates is an idiot that I couldn't like very much, and a lot of the morals and philosophies that rightly belong in the story I don't think were handled very well. White also completely leaves out a lot of things from famous Arthurian stories that I wanted to read because I hoped the book would give a pretty thorough telling of all the classic King Arthur stuff. Lest this review sound too negative, I must say that it was still an entertaining and educating novel and certainly worth dedicating the time to read, it just did not live up to its reputation and could have been much better.
Rating: Summary: The Arthurian Tale Done Right! Review: This book is almost too good for words! I read "The Once and Future King" as a school project when I was a teenager. Never did I enjoy homework so much! T.H. White had me hanging on every word of this wonderfully done version of the story of King Arthur. Of particular interest was the attention paid to Lancelot. White brought this character alive and made him a living, breathing being. After reading this book as a young man I was dazzled with thoughts of chivalry and virtuous conduct. It really enriched my life. "The Once and Future King" is truly great literature! Buy this book now and bring a brilliant piece of olde English lore into your world.
Rating: Summary: Longest Book Ever Written (Almost) Review: The First Chapter went pretty quickly; however, the second was the longest and most boring chapter in the entire book- it took me at least a month to finish the first few pages of it. It becomes very complicated and confusing and I had to read it over and over again to actually understand what was going on. Of course, my opinion is biased because I am forced to read it for school for the summer. But anyway, it seems like a fairly good book. I gave it two stars because Chapter 2 was awful.
Rating: Summary: White's Marvelous Arthurian Romp Review: T.H. White's "Once and Future King" is one of the most amusing books ever written (in my not-so-humble opinion). White takes Mallory's "Morte d'Arthur" and makes it easier to follow (Mallory's tales are pretty complicated and not particularly linear), adds elements of humor, and still keeps the story lines intact. The first section of this novel was used as the basis for Disney's "The Sword in the Stone." I think anyone with an interest in medieval legend would thoroughly enjoy this book. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Rating: Summary: A book which shall be read in your future... Review: What a great book! T.H. White is an excellent writer, and, with this book, he has successfully written about the Arthurian Legend. Yet, I gave it four stars. The reasons are: when some of the animals in the book talk, it is very hard to understand them because they 'taulk lik thees'. Also, I found book 2 to be the most boring book in the entire book. Besides the fact that it is very long and I was forced to read it for english class in 2 weeks, it is a very good book. Before I was hesitant to read it because, one, of its intimidating size, and, two, because I was not really into King Arthur, Guenevere, and Sir Lancelot. It is a great book, I don't want to say much about it because some of it might be given away, but one thing, Sir Lancelot is quite different than I originally pictured him to be. If you want to read more on the Knights of the Round Table, read this. It is a great book.
Rating: Summary: Great book (or books) Review: This is my favorite book of all time, and I've read it several times. What I hadn't done on previously, though, was read the forward. It reveals several things, including the author's sexuality, and his inner struggle about World War II. This really enlightened me as to what White was trying to do. The focus is on the men in the book, and their platonic love for each other, while the women are relegated to supporting roles. The question of Might For Right, or not, is one of the central themes. The end is sad, but also triumphant, where White "lays down his pen" to fight for his country, against the Nazis (who were likened to mindless ants in the first book).
Rating: Summary: What an adventure!! Review: I read this book for my 9th lit class. I have read many books about the legend of Merlin and King Arthur, but this book by far was the most fictional. It allowed me to see another side of the story. Parts of it reminded me of "Monty Python" humour. That is part of the reason that I liked it so much. I did get confused by Merlin and how T H White tried to explain his aging.
Rating: Summary: My Favorite Book Ever Review: I think Every one should read this book. It has all the parts of a great book.I plan on reading it again. I wish every person in the world could read it. I think it was cool how no one could beat ir Lancealot. I think King Arthur took that Lance and Guinevere were lovers pretty well. I think T.H. White is a great writer.
Rating: Summary: Great book but... Review: This book overall was a very good book and I enjoyed it very much but the only draw back was that the descriptions of some of the scenes were very long and got boring after reading a page of them. Other than that i cannot think of any reason why someone would not like this book.In the beginning of the book it starts out from The Sword in the Stone. Which we see wart Arthur is really like and we see what kind of person he will become. This is also where they go into long detail about the scene and what it is like because they have to explain every new scene that Arthur goes through as he changes from animal to insect and so on. The book picks up from here and goes into Arthurs first years as king and his new ideas and what he has to do to achieve his goals that he has set. In this time of the book it often switches off between 2 diffrent characters and that is the 3 knights including Sir Grummermore, and the King Arthur. Some people really hate this because they always go to another scene when it get's to the good part but i think it is always worth it because when you do read what happens next it is always rewarding. Now in this section in the book it is the end of King Arthurs reign and he is slowly declining from power and it is sad to see the king that was once so strong now slowly fading away. Overall I thought this was a great book and I recommend it to everyone that enjoys reading.
