Rating: Summary: Very good but... Review: Very good book, but if you don't already know, it is all just one long anti-Jewish, pro-Arab commentary. I don't remember if Herbert acknowleged this or not; I could be wrong, but I think he did. We are meant to see the Fremen as Arabs, the Harkonnen as the "evil Jews" (they came to take the land of the Fremen away from them; they only care about profit; Baron Harkonnen drinks blood; etc.), the spice is very obviously oil, the Emperor is the USA. It is a testament to the book's worth that this less-than-savory inspiration for it nevertheless does not detract from Dune's overall artistic merit.
Rating: Summary: !!!The God of good books!!! Review: GREAT BOOK. Love the way Herbert has made up a "new" religion, based on Islam and Christianety...It gives the reader a perfect picture into a futur, where humans relly more on other people, then robots. Also the part about "making a perfect humaniod" is great.
Rating: Summary: A great book, wish there was a six star rating Review: An absolutely amazing book filled with 3 dimensional characters, wonderful settings, and fasinating events. I highly recommend this book. Anyone who would rate this book bellow five stars either never really read the book or has no taster.
Rating: Summary: Better than FIVE STARS Review: If ever there was a book that deserved more than five stars, Dune is it. Provocative in the extreme, imaginative beyond imagination, and creative beyond comprehension, this book is a powerful tale of Science Fiction that will stand alone as a peice of artistic literature for all eternity. Frank Herbert's ability to transport the readers mind into the places that he describes is unbelievable. This should be required reading for all true students of literature. Thank you Frank for a book that will never end up dusty on the bottom of my bookshelf.
Rating: Summary: The dissenting voice Review: When I read reviews on Amazon, I generally wade through the sea of 5's looking for the dissenting voice hoping to find honest criticism instead of yet more gushing praise. If you're like me, here's your review.Despite the cult that revolves around this book, it's just not that good. It holds up pretty well if you haven't read much complex fiction (i.e. you're 18), but when viewed as part of the greater mass of English literature, it rises only slightly above the rest of the SF genre. The characters are changeless cardboard, the epic historical veneer and societal exposition only paper thin, the political framework simplistic, and the technology overly convenient to the story. In a lot of ways it's a very ambitious project, and I think it is the ambition rather than the success of the project that has contributed more to the book's popularity. It's a bit of a shame that Herbert didn't stretch out more and really flesh out the world of Dune, but that would have made for a 1200 page story that was already pushing its luck at 400 pages. Within SF Dune is an unquestionable high-water mark, but outside the genre it's only barely worth the time to read it, if that.
Rating: Summary: Science Fiction At It's Best Review: Don't let the horrid 1984 film Dune scare you away from reading one of the finest science fiction books of all time. Frank Herbert's DUNE is a masterpiece, exceptionally well written, with it's uniquely thought-out plots, which are all woven together to form the ultimate science fiction story. But this book offers much more than just a story. It's packed with a plethera of philosphy and insight into the themes of government, religion, control, power, and life itself. A MUST HAVE for any science fiction reader.
Rating: Summary: Lotsa sand & and guys in stillsuits - what more do you want? Review: Presently, I write this review. Presently, Dune is a solid piece of SF, but not without its flaws. Presently, Herbert saw it necessary to use the word presently at least once every other page. I also find the idea of some futuristic fiefdom a little unlikely, and remained unconvinced by the end. Better than Star Wars. Not that that is any great feat. Can anyone direct me to a good stillsuit manufacturer? I am planning on moving to Arizona.
Rating: Summary: Unforgettable and Absolutely Unmatched in ANY genre. Review: Provocative and sometimes terrifying, DUNE transports us to Arrakis. A place like no other I have visited in my travels of the imagination. Brilliant in every sense.
Rating: Summary: The greatest book of all time! Review: Religion, politics, deception, wonder, and mystery pave the way for the greatest book in all of history. This is a journey about the mind and how things work. It is impossible for any reader to be dissapointed about this book.
Rating: Summary: The best book ever writen! Review: Frank Herbert did a great job on this book. I'm currently reading it for the second time and plan to read the rest of the series later this year.
