Rating: Summary: A Fantasy of Excellence Review: I never buy hardcover, but Martin has me waiting ever so impatiently for the remaining books of this series. Call me a fantasy snob, but the majority of works in this genre leave me feeling like I've wasted valuable reading time. Not so with Martin! He is a master of characterization, with a strong plot and endless creative twists! You will not find better fantasy! I am excited, too, to hear that there will be an end after 6 books. Lots to read, with closure. (What a novel idea!) Thank you, Mr. Martin!
Rating: Summary: A Solid Read Review: An exciting follow up that shows real promise of blooming into a great fantasy series. The plot moves along at a steady clip, but doesn't skip any of the in-depth character development that we saw in the first book. The book is a clasic tale of war and intrigue between kings. This series shows real promise of a great story. The books only major downfall is it's very crude and gratuitous look at sexuality. Although, it adds a little realism it isn't neccessary that is why it's called fantasy. Most of the adult insights are as important and deep as the shower scene in the Porky's movie.
Rating: Summary: realistic fantasy (oxymoron?) Review: All of the regular praise aside, I think the reason why I love this series -and we're talking only 2 books in a projected 5 book plus series- above all other fantasy epics is the gritty, realism of warfare and the naturalistic take on the fantasy world. Don't get me wrong, the Wheel of Time, Riftwar, Belgariad, Lord of the Rings, I all love. The strength of these two books is not only the characters but the overall feeling of a world that lives and breathes like our own world but still manages to be fantasy. Issues of rape, incest, and so on are found in the book when most fantasy authors are loathe to enter into those topics. Mr. Martin has his characters doing acts not typical of most in the genre. It delves into the ideas of what defines a hero. All the characters have deep flaws to balance their good points, and that is what makes it interesting. Throughout all the dark points, there seems to be a sense of promise throughout the book. Despite all the turmoil going on, you feel that the author has to have something happy occur soon, you just know it. It's the whole "light at the end of the tunnel" thing. Anyway, that is one aspect of why it is my favorite fantasy epic.
Rating: Summary: This one makes you fear Part III Review: I've never read a sequel that was so good. I would not say that KOK is better than GOT, but it succeeds on a completely different level. Where GOT was a chronicle of a decaying Empire, KOK is a grim, realistic, hard battlebook. Action gets fast and diverse and the speed increases much. So much that I am afraid of Part III. If it goes on like this, my little mind will not be able to cope with it all. Next month I'll start re-reading the books to have it all in fresh memory when Part III comes out in August.
Rating: Summary: I LOVE THIS SERIES! Review: THIS IS A GREAT SERIES TO READ. ONCE I BOUGHT THE BOOKS I COULD NOT PUT THEM DOWN. PROBLEM IS I FINISHED BOTH BOOKS WITHIN A WEEK AND NOW I'VE BEEN WAITING PATIENTLY FOR THE NEXT BOOK IN THE SERIES TO COME OUT. I LIKE THE FACT THAT IT IS NOT AS FAR FETCHED AS SOME OTHER FANTASY BOOKS. KEEP WITH THE REALISM. AND PLEASE HURRY WITH THE NEXT BOOK!
Rating: Summary: Another triumph Review: I was glad to see Martin did not lose the momentum of his story in this second book, the sequel to _A Game of Thrones_ which I also loved. This book is every bit as gripping as the first, and I could barely stand to close it until I had finished. And when I had finished, I was sorry there wasn't any more! :) I await the next book in the series impatiently, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.
Rating: Summary: He's done it again Review: After waiting for what seemed like an eternity the sequel to A Game of Thrones finnally came out. This book is absolutely fabulous. Myriad twists and turns, devasting battles and magic all intertwine to form this fabulous novel. The only problem I have now is waiting for the next book to come out so I can find out what happens next
Rating: Summary: Martin leaves us champing at the bit... Review: Continuing and expanding the excellent story begun in "A Game of Thrones", "A Clash of Kings" takes us further into the chaos that has descended upon the land of Westeros now that king Robert Baratheon is dead. The "Seven Kingdoms" are fracturing, war and madness reign, and through it all George R. R. Martin ties the plot together and cranks up the volume notch by notch. All of us who dove into this series are now frothing at the mouth waiting for the next book... "Clash" ends with so many cliffhangers that I spent a decent amount of time lying awake at night wondering what in god's name was going to happen NEXT. This series is one of the best fantasy epics I have ever read, and I have faith that Martin will keep the pressure on, and fan interest up, unlike Robert Jordan. If you have not started this series, go NOW and read the first book, and then (slowly!) read "A Clash of Kings", as the third book (Supposedly titled "A Storm of Swords") is not due out till Fall of this year. Hang on!
Rating: Summary: A worthy sequel Review: The plot from the previous book intensifies and we are thrown in the middle of the war in the Westeros. While the realm is in turmoil, there are other powerful threats gathering at the edge of the world of man. Keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way. The only thing that bothered me a bit was the unresolved twist at the end...but I guess Mr. Martin will see to it in the next book.
