Rating: Summary: Deeply Impressed Review: I was happily suprised to pull up other reviews of this book and find them glowing (as well they should be) since I came here with the intention of defending this story against all the "who cares about a book from a VIDEO GAME" people. To set the record straight (briefly) I'm a hard core gamer, an avid reader and an airforce firearms instructor. I'm not here to rack up praise for this novel just because I loved the game (though it was spectacular! anxiously awaiting the second chapter) but because it deserves a glowing review. When I first heard about the book I was truly worried. I was too enthralled with the game to pass up a chance for a deeper look into the story but I was very concerned as to the quality of the writing. My first thought was "gimick", but I took the plunge anyway. I can now say how thrilled I am to be proved wrong. Nylund did more than just fill in the background, he truly captured the essence of the story. This is a novel first and foremost, not just "video game hype". A work that easily stands on its own (With one exception, but I'm getting there). Nor do we simply follow the chief around growing up and getting a shiny green suit. The whole Halo universe is built up and explained - the chief's 'recruitment', training and operations together with his fellow teammates (the SPARTANS) is detailed along with the first encounters with the Covenant, fleet engagements (it's fun to find out where Captain Keyes came from and his involved history with the MasterChief) and the general history of the human race up to the point where the game picks up. You also get a more solid feel for the precarious nature of our situation that the game only hints at. The one shortcoming (if you choose to call it that, as some have) is that, while this story is a prequel, some experience with the game is necessary for the purposes of visualization. What I mean is that Nylund expects you to know what things LOOK like before you start reading, so he doesn't go into a lot of description of things that were present in the game. If you don't know what a warthog, hunter or Mojolnir suit look like before you start, you might be a little lost. If you've played the game for even a few hours, you should have little difficulty, however, and even just looking at the box art on the game as well as the book cover should give you some frame of reference (assuming you haven't played the game yet... and why not???) In summary, this is a book much deserving of praise. There was obviously a lot of thought and research put into the creation of a truly solid story. So if you're intrested in the world of Halo (as well as a little foreshadowing on the second game - Mr. Nylund worked with microsoft and bungie on this if I'm not mistaken) then ignore the "Video games are for kids" evil stigma and pick up an original, engrossing and fun book.
