Rating: Summary: halo: the fall of reach Review: i bought this book yesterday..thats right yesterday....and i have finished. that's how good this book is. it is quite definately the most enthrawling book i have ever read. i happen to be a massive fan of the game, which is partly the reason i bought the book, and i wasn't dissapointed. the book describes the lives of the 75 spartans who were grafted into the UNSC war machine at the age of six in order to train to be bio-engineered super soldiers. it traces through their training to early missions and on into the human-covenant war. the action never lets up and i felt genuinely upset when any of the characters died-the writer makes them so familiar to the reader. this is a must read for any sci-fi military fan. it may be a book of a game and for those of you that have seen mortal combat you will know that games dont translate well to other forms of media. however halo:the fall of reach is done really well. if you have played the game you will be able to visualise each detail from the alien vessels broadsiding human ships to the way the grunts tear after the main characters during battle....i wish i could give this book 6/5

Rating: Summary: Not even Harry Potter can cast a spell on this book Review: Where do i get started on how good this book is? Any person that has played Halo for Xbox would love this book. They would understand what a grunt, hunter, elite, and jackel would look like when it came up in the book. Any non-halo players might be a little clueless about what they look like, but of course the story-line would make up for it. The brutal covenant forces were sent by their god to destroy all mankind throughout the universe, taking no prisoners. the humans are trying to make sure the covenant do not find any trace of the planet Earth and what it looks like, and where it is located. Outnumbered and outgunned, the humans seem to have little chance against the vicious beasts. But Reach holds a very guarded secret. It is the training ground for the "Super Soldiers" Code named SPARTANs. These Highly advanced warriors, specially bioengineered and technologically augmented, are the best in the universe - quiet, professional, and deadly. Now as the ferocious covenant attack begins, a handful of SPARTANs stand ready to wage the ultimate war. They will kill, they will be destroyed, but they will never surrender. And at least one of them - The SPARTAN known as the Master Chief - will live to fight another day on a mysterious artificial world called Halo...I'm surely bad at using words but if that doesnt grab you then you should still buy this book. It is one of the greatest books i've ever read. This is like, bigger than the harry potter series.
Rating: Summary: A superior product. Review: When I picked up The Fall of Reach, I expected a fairly amateurish attempt to make a prequel to Halo. I was pleasantly surprised. Eric Nylund obviously put a lot of thought into the thing, and it shows. The book is a believable and knowledgable, staying close to the story of Halo while adding in interesting background information.
Rating: Summary: An easily recommendable work Review: As far as video-game based shoot-em ups go, this one is great. It's not high literature, but its a high as this genre can get It's lacking a bit in the human department; I wish that The Master Chief had had a more human touch to him. He is a genetically engineered super soldier with the mind of a combat machine... and not much else. We never witness him in any normal situations, such as just chit-chatting or lounging, but I spose as a combat warrior he doesnt do as much of this anyway. Still, he feels distant, and the reader may have trouble sympathizing totally with him Oh well. This isn't a character study, it's an action piece. This book reminds me in a way of the first Star Wars: an exciting and brillinat standalone work that is really only a set-up in the grand scheme of things. There is a titanic space battle between the Navy space Warships and the Covenant's, which is really cool and exciting, which is a surprise given the written medium.>Nylund is a smooth, clear writer who keeps the pace crisp. He also a genieus in the acedemic sense, and science is incorporated into the action in a way that is interesting and never boring. A great book, fun and enjoyable. Not as great as the DOOM series, but still ahead of Resdient Evil and a ... lot better than BRUTE FORCE. And, sorry to say, its a superior read than the follow up: THE FLOOD.
Rating: Summary: I didn't think Master Chief could get so corny... Review: Don't get me wrong, I'm a very big fan of Halo-it's one of my favorite games. Don't get me wrong again-I really did admire the game's interesting story (which, if I'm not mistaken is retold in Halo: The Flood). The Fall of Reach is a prequel to the game, which tells the story before Halo. It answers questions like, where did Master Chief, Cortana, and Captain Keyes come from, what is the deal with the Covenant, why was Master Chief in the "Hushed Casket" at the beginning of Halo the game. This takes everything ritious about the game and waters it down. It is interesting at some parts, but to give Master Chief a name is dumb unless it provides some kind of vital importance to the plot. I really didn't care what he did as a kid, I want to know more about the Spartans. I was really wondering, how in the world are they going to arrive at the beginning of the game. When they did, I was so disappointed. There are some good parts of the book. I kind of liked the character of Ensign Lowell too. I'm sure there's some enjoyment sci-fi readers will find, which is why I'm giving this a 2 instead of 1. But, oh man...the potential...how great this book could have been.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: I usually try to avoid books that are based on video games, as I find that they can be shallow at times. Plus, they usually try to follow the game storyline too closely and that results in a very predictable and sometimes undeveloped story. However, due to the game involving such an excellent storyline, I thought I'd give the book a [try], as it already had a pretty good game foundation. I was pleasantly surprised. Eric Nylund does an excellent job of writing the prequel to the video game. Not only does he stay true to the video game route, he makes the book interesting by adding in various aspects that are found in more creative titles. Such as explaining the space & terrestrial combat sequences with a creative flair that rivals most military fiction books. He also incorporates creative military strategy that is not clichéd, and sounds truly hypothesized. Although, don't let this fool you, as Mr. Nylund does not completely center this book around military action. Instead, he manages to successfully develop multiple characters through the course of the novel as well as character interaction. This is certainly the best game-based book since the first and second book of the "Doom" series in the mid-1990's. I'd highly recommend "Halo: The Fall of Reach" to any action/adventure or military fiction fan.
Rating: Summary: halo fall of reach Review: The author Eric Nyland did a great job writing this fantasy/action book. You keep interest all through out the book, none stop action with great vocab that pulls you in. The book takes place on a planet called Reach and a couple other planets. The main character name is John (Spartan 117) he was picked up as a child by captain Keys of the human military. His purpose was to make super soldiers called Spartans, faster, stronger, faster, and smarter than regular humans soldiers. All of these efforts are to fight a war with an evil alien race called the covenant. And by the way it takes place before the Xbox game, so you not confused.
Rating: Summary: SO GOOD, NEED MORE HALO Review: I love this book. Even though i am 11 it is the best game and book in the world. I recomend reading the book first. Then playing the game. It makes it so it goes in order. It really doesn't matter anyway. I think that this book should win a Newberry award for how well it is. I am glad that the other book about the flood is coming out because of how much this book kept me hanging. It took me about 4 weeks to read this. I read it almost 13 hours a day. I had to go back to understand a little bit of it but i still love it.
