Rating: Summary: A very good prequel Review: Ok, there is nothing much to say. This book was great. It is kind of slow in some parts but adventure packed most of the time. If you like the game you will love the book. It gives you a better picture about Halo.
Rating: Summary: Superior! Review: I loved this book to the highest exent and i recommend it to anyone who enjoys sci-fi/military books.
Rating: Summary: For the military Sci-fi genre, it's one of the best Review: I had not even realized, when purchasing this book, that it was inspired (or written for) a game. I had previously read other Nylund books, and had enjoyed all of them. I was not disappointed, and found the book an excellent read, with a nice, brisk, pace and well developed characters. It's no more than it purports to be, kind of a pulpish military sci-fi novel, but I have to give it 5 stars because it was obviously not thrown together to satifsy a contract. The plotline is good, the characters well done, and the action well placed throughout. As one reviewer pointed out, there is a Heinlein quality to the book, but I'd add that there is also an obvious nod to other military sci-fi authors as well. For all that, it's not in the lease derivative. Good job Eric. Keep writing!
Rating: Summary: A wonderful novel that does justice to the sci-fi genre Review: Nylund's "Halo: Fall of Reach" could be directly compared to Robert A. Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" in terms of its ability to create a war setting, futuristic characters for that setting, and make a reader care deeply about the novel's outcome. "The Fall of Reach" is a story meant to be the prequel for the Xbox game Halo: Combat Evolved, and as such it completes its task to every extent. The novel sets up the characters, gives gamers and readers alike a history of the future and its soldiers, and it never allows for a spare moment. This is a novel that can easily be read in four or five hours, due to its tenacious speed and overwhelming levels of brief, yet thorough, details. While I did want to give this novel five stars, I am compelled it lower that rating to four stars because it relies too heavily upon secondary sources (the video game) for its details. In other words, if you haven't played Halo: Combat Evolved, you are bound to misunderstand much of what the SPARTANS look like, what the Covenant look like, and what the machinery looks like. Nylund seemed a bit too quick when he introduced these elements of the novel, and that leads me to believe "Halo: Fall of Reach" is meant to compliment the video game, instead of the game complimenting the novel. In the end, if you are looking for a compelling novel that alludes to how (unintentially) cruel a military can be, I highly recommend Fall of Reach. Also, if you've played Halo, this is a must-read: the novel compliments the game so well that you'll return to the game's world just to re-experience the drama Nylund set forth.
Rating: Summary: Halo: The Fall of Reach Review: I am an avid gamer myself, not many games can really intrigue me. I played the game Halo the plot-line from the beggining is difficult to comprehend. I played through all the missions had fun, exept for the concrete storyline the game in almost all aspects perfect. I was looking for a much more in-depth view of the game. When i came across The Fall of Reach i read the book learned how everything happened how The Covenant came to be and who Master Cheif really was. I believe that Eric Nylund did a very good job in making this book. He put interesting twists and turns in it. All in all i would give this book a 10/10 for anyone who likes to play Sci-Fi first person shooter games, or anyone whos just bored.
Rating: Summary: Quite a surprise! Review: I love the game, that's the only reason I bought the book. Since it's the origin of the Master Chief, I had to buy it. I wasen't expecting much, but I was blown away! The author did an amazing job making an origin out of the Master Chief and the Covanent. The fight scene's are really well written, (which is a good thing for this type of novel)the characters are established well and the spce fight scenes will remind you of some star trek movie. Overall, this book is a great read, it sucked me in for a week, but unfortunately spat me out. It may seem like a long book, but once you get to the end, you'll want the book to go on.
Rating: Summary: Complicated Review: The book is extremely into the combat between the Covenants and the Spartans, and tell the reader some background information about the game Halo for X-Box. The bad part about this book is that there are not too many surprising parts that fits in with the game.
Rating: Summary: A definate must read Review: This is a grat book and wonderfully wrote. It takes from earth, to the depts of the planet Halo. I haven't read all the book, but sor far, I agree, it would make a killer movie!!!
Rating: Summary: Awsome Book! Review: I bought a copy of Halo with my Xbox a while back. And i wanted to know how it all came to be. My hopes were answered when this book was released. I didn't know if it would be good or not and I had my doubts. But I loved the game so I went to the nearest bookstore and purchased it. And I am about half way through it right now and I have to tell you that this is one of the best books ever. I love it! If you are thinking about buying it then do so because you wont be dissapointed. Unless you don't like sci-fi novels. So if you want to know the back story on the game Halo, then don't hesitate and pick this book up now!
Rating: Summary: I'd give this zero but it's not an option Review: Eric Nylund knows zilch about writing combat. This some of the worst amateur drivel I've ever had the misfortune to come across. It must have been a struggle to write something so flat and uncharasmatic as this. The action reads like it was written for members of the Oprah Book Club or as an after school special. It's not good scifi. It's not good action. It's not emotionally mature or challenging in any way. What is most surprising is Nylund's other books "Signal to Noise" etc. are pretty good. This on the other hand is a car accident with no survivors. There are dozens of fantastic authors writing military scifi. Nylund is not one of them. Want good miltiary scifi? Try John G Hemry's Stark series, Ian Douglas's "Semper Luna" trilogy, Steve Perry's "Matador" series, Walter Jon Williams "Metropolitan" series, David Weber "Honor Harrington" series, Joe Haldeman's "Forever Peace" and "Forever War".
