Rating: Summary: This tops em all Review: This is the best of the (current) trilogy. There is no resolution at all... just alot of really juicy character development. Thats really what this series is about, characters. If you read this for plot, you are going to be disappointed. Sure, it is unpredictable, but you won't be satisfied that loose ends are not tied up, good guys don't always win, etc.Why say more? Just go and buy this entire series... undeniably the best fantasy series I have ever read. Lord of the Rings was great in it's day, but you can only read the same book so many times. This is the next big fantasy series that defies and defines the genre!
Rating: Summary: G.R.R. Martin Rules the Fantasy Universe !!!!! Review: This book, as well as the ALL the others in this series (even the ones not yet written), is the most captivating fantasy literature I have EVER read. Martin has Perfected the art of putting you in the world he has created. He paints and engraves an extremely vivid picture of what he wants you to see and understand. His descriptions of people, places, and events are so acute that one has no choice but to see everything in their minds eye. The vision then stays put as you climb the walls in bated anticipation of his next masterpiece. His characters are intensely written and the events have the Perfect mixture of political imbroglio, intrigue, passion, lust, sin, violance, cunning, irony, pcychology, humor, paranormal, evil, honor, and high adventure. This stuff is most definitely not for the youthful. With Martin, any and all characters are fair game. No one escapes the grip of tragedy. The realism is superb, right down to the way they speak. The plots hit you with the boldness of a great axe yet inspire thought with the skillful delicacy of a sharp razor. If you haven't read George R.R. Martin yet, get ready to be ruined for life because, after this, nothing else will compare. Martin sets the standard for superior quality fantasy. JUST GET ALL THE BOOKS...
Rating: Summary: Five stars isn't enough Review: For the love of God I hope he doesn't wait 2 more years for the next installment... ... This is by far the best fantasy series I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: Captivating and gut wrenching Review: This book by far surpassed my expectations.I knew it would be great and all that, but damn G.R.R.M. plain and simply srewed up my world with the story line. This book was going just the way i suspected and wham....characters who i thought would make it die on me and then the unredemable find salvation. All i have left to say is if you haven`t read this excellent work of fiction,Then do so now.
Rating: Summary: Waiting for the sequel Review: I was obliged to buy the third book in English because it was not translated in French ! Very adult fantasy !
Rating: Summary: George is God Review: This book and others in the series, rate higher than any other Fantasy in any form Book, Game, Video, or other. I bought the third Book first and devoured it realising the book was what i had always wanted from the tired genre. I have often bought a book of new fantasy authors to see if they're any good, but i am often disapointed by the quality of writing. I learned to read using Gamebooks and Fighting Fantasy and Lonewolf series and later Forgotten Realms Books. But the Novels of most Fantasy authors left me cold many sit half read on my shelves. Yet Martin griped me on the first page, and after further reading i soon realised that this is the best book i'd ever read./ Harsh it might be but realisticaly true and absorbing. The use of detail creates the impression of reality and the number of thoughts that the story provides are infinate. I've read Tolkien it was a more tiresome book compared to the Song of fire and ice and infinately less believable. So Read George R. R. Martin and enyoy!.
Rating: Summary: Writing leaves much to be desired Review: I agree with the majority of reviewers that Martin's concept is rather refreshing in the fantasy genre. However, I can't agree with the five-star ratings or the comparison to Tolkien, because I'm less than impressed with his writing. A good book should make you care about individual characters, not just the circumstances or the events surrounding them. My engagement level with the characters rapidly dwindled with each page - all three books, not just 'A Storm of Swords', and it was a torture to read through nearly 1,000 pages filled with crudity, unlovable characters, incest, and mindless violence and butchery. Many reviewers seem to think this more accurately reflects the real world, but, to my knowledge, the human history has had its share of heroism, courage, and virtue as well as depravity and violence. Martin seems intent on focusing on the latter and ignore the former. There are reasons why people like styles of Eddings and Tolkiens.
Rating: Summary: excellent read Review: A Storm Of Swords was one of the best books ive read in years, with hundreds of characters fully developed and twists at every turn. I only hope the next in the series comes soon i've only just finished and im already wanting more
Rating: Summary: Why, oh why isn't Book 4 ready, now?? Review: The best praise I can give a story would be when I have the great urge to tear my hair over the knowledge that I must now wait at least a year to find out what happens to all these, fine, wonderful, & wicked people. Yes, people. When you've invested almost 3000 pages in a story (and you're only half way there), the characters are no longer _just_ characters, or plot devices. And Mr. Martin is very good at giving his readers people to care about, and cry about. Oh, and be careful about attachments to these folks, because you will cry, but it's still worth it. The plots are diverse, the twists wonderful, and I can't wait to get my hands on book four (oh please hurry, Mr. Martin!)
Rating: Summary: Now I Just Feel Abused Review: Engaging but not riveting; this installment focuses much more on story development than on gut-wrenching, heart-squeezing plot twists...until the middle. Wait for it, it'll just about make you stop reading! But don't ;) Martin continues to deliver, but I hope the slight slowdown isn't an indication that he's running out of things to do..... Bonus points for not being quite as vulgar as Book 2.
