Rating: Summary: Unbelievable and Simple the best!!!! more like 100 stars... Review: If you like real life themes than this is for you. Martin does makes you feel like you are reading our world history, were the "good guys" aren't always good and the "bad guys" aren't always bad. People say tolkien is the best, but I have to disagree. He is certainly the MOST important of all the fantasy writers because he showed everyone how it is to be done, but I found his stories wanting, and a little boring, almost kiddy like. And I certainly don't love his characters. His books are for children, Martin writes for adults. For me, I like the sense of reality, which isn't always nice and clean, but mostly grim and grey. I would say that tolkien is on the "nice" end of the spectrum and Martin is on the "not so nice" end of the spectrum in terms of violence and adult like themes. (Robert Jordan kind of fits right in the middle there and he is a great writer also!!) If you like for all the "good charecters" to live happily ever efter than this is not for you. But if you like suspense and a heart pumping thriller, than start with book 1, A Game Of Thrones, and be drawn into martin's world....!!!!!
Rating: Summary: The series marches forth... in strong fashion! Review: The series thus far in a word: rocks! Action and intrigue that keeps you riveted and begging for more. Just don't get too attached to any character; heads roll any time, any where (The Red Wedding crept up and bit hard!). The first book in this series brought me back to reading fantasy, and each subsequent tale has built up the tension. I can't wait for the next book to be released!
Rating: Summary: Settle down every one Review: I can't beleive people who read part of a series and even when they don't know how many books there will be they go WOW its just as good as Tolken. the Tolken series is complete and better then anything else i have read. could this be as good, eh its got a small shot wich is saying alot. Things that ... though is the lack of a big climax in any of the books. You will not finish this book and feel food about how it ended. you will instead wonder how much longer you are going to have to wait until the next book so you can see what happend. Other things that ... Ok i know Stories right themselves and you just see things happen but MY GOD STOP KILLING EVERYONE. The Red wedding shocked me cause even though there are no heros's in the book the king in the north was the guy i wanted to win. why i kept reading My favorite charecter died i don't know. Good things in this book. YOU NEVER KNOW.you get easily attached to the chars and just when you love them the most there head can and most of the time will come off. it dosn't even matter that another charecter was on a 2 book long quest to get to that char they die. You fear for your chars because they can die. Other Good things. theres good guys and bad guys but most of the good guys can do bad things (stannis) and the bad char can do good things (Hound) and even chars that did Horrible things can make you like them (Jaime) have fun reading it
Rating: Summary: Why does he take so long to write these? Review: Perhaps it's because everything is so intricately detailed? I don't know, but I do know that it's going to be very hard to wait until August, 2002 to read the next book in this series. It is a truly wonderful series, and this book continues that tradition, ratcheting up the suspense and the intrigue to a level that's almost hard to take.In this series, there are no *true* heroes. Everybody's flawed in some ways, they do nasty things to their enemies. They even sometimes, out of necessity, do nasty things to their friends. Even the truly evil characters end up having some redeeming characteristics. It doesn't make them any less likable, but it does make them a lot more human. The characters are spread all over the world, even more so in this book then in the previous ones. There are so many plotlines to follow that it can sometimes be confusing. But if you work at it a little bit, it's not that hard. Each chapter is told in a different character's point of view. Some characters never have their view told, and we only see them through the eyes of others. We never see Robb's point of view, but we see him through Catelyn's eyes, for example. In this book, we get our first look at Jaime Lannister. Through the first two books, he appears mostly as a scumbag. But Martin shows that he does have a sense of honour, even though it is a bit warped. It provided a very interesting contrast from the first two books. Another hallmark of this series is that you can never tell what's going to happen. Just because a character is one of the "main" characters, doesn't mean that character will survive the book. Martin has no qualms about killing off his major characters. It makes a refreshing change. Finally, throughout the first three books, magic of a sorts is slowly making its way back into the world. The series starts out as more medieval then fantasy, but it's going to be moving a bit more toward the fantastic. This series (and this book) is the perfect cure for the person who thinks that fantasy has become old hat. Do yourself a favour and pick it up. Martin has promised it will only be 6 books, so you don't even need to worry about that like you do about Robert Jordan.
Rating: Summary: GREAT book Review: I can't wait for the next one to come out. This one was great. It continues on the story of the Starks, Lannisters, Daenerys with her dragons, and everyone. It keeps you on your toes and wanting more. It keeps you guessing. You get in to the characters and everyone almost seems real, so that when something happens, it'll either shock you, or make you happy. A wonderful book.
Rating: Summary: Greatness continued Review: George R. R. Martin's masterful tales of royal intrigue are a relieving respite from the works of Robert Jordan. The development of each character and their cultural influences are a treat to the mind. I highly recommend this series to any reader, young and old. I must say, it is my favorite, and maybe it'll become yours too.
Rating: Summary: Incredible Review: Who actually gave this book less than 5 stars? I saw the rating when looking through Amazon today, and I couldn't believe someone could rate this less than 5. Martin doesn't care who dies, nor does he care who wins. More than that, there are no lines of good and evil drawn. Anyone that's read other reviews, or the book will see this. More than this, though, is his style. He can write, and he can write well. Not all of the Fantasy of our Era is well written. This, however, is well written. Full marks for a well written book, book 4 is highly anticipated.
Rating: Summary: It doesn't get better than this Review: In what I've finally convinced myself to be a series to rival Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire has slipped itself into my life, and it's all I can do to not read it all the time. I'm currently on Storm of Swords, and already I'm awaiting the release of Martin's next one. Fabulous read, whether you're a fan of fantasy or not, you grow to love, hate, or feel both for his characters. Extraordinary.
Rating: Summary: A mastery of interwoven plots and characters Review: I thoroughly enjoyed all three of these volumes. This book has an exteremely lifelike presence to it with all of its vibrant characters and detailed storylines. Keep going Martin.
Rating: Summary: For the first time I am waiting for the sequel... Review: Never before has a series of novels gotten better with each edition. It has been a year since Storm of Swords, and I scan the lists weekly searching for the release date of book four. No higher praise can I give.
