Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: I just Finished. Review: I just finished the book and it's wonderful. If you are a WOT fan, I would suggest reading this book. It fills in a lot of details that are only hinted at in the other books. If you are a Wheel of Time fan you should read this book.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: A Voice Of Reason Review: To begin with I must qualify to myself, and to the readers of this review, why I gave this book only 4 stars. I am a HUGE fan of the Wheel. Oddly enough, I love Wheel of Time for a lot of the same reasons many people don't. A big one is the characters have flaws. Many times characters make wrong choices, act stupidly, and have personal problems. Other times they just don't have enough information to make the right choices. I see this tendency in Jordan's writing as a strength. It keeps him away from the mass-produced characters that get old really quick. Also, Jordan has come up with more original concepts and approaches to magic, war, world features, cultures etc. in the Wheel than most authors can hope for in a lifetime of writing. Don't get me wrong, Brooks, Goodking, Card, Salvatore, I own and still enjoy many of their works, but to me Jordan stands on top of the mountain. There were probably few people who looked forward to "A New Spring" more than I did. When I read the first short story with the same title my only complaint was that there wasn't more of it. Many view prequels as a quick money idea, but I feel it's a genuine opportunity to add depth and texture to a series. "A New Spring" was written for just that. Now, to my point. I enjoyed this novel form of the story a lot. But, I do have some complaints. (hence 4 instead of 5 stars) First: Robert Jordan writes the best battles I've ever encountered. A little Aiel War would have been most welcome. Second: The addition of the plot line where Moiraine was being cornered into taking the Sun Throne was unnecessary I felt. Third: Why was the section where Moiraine reads by Rand's name deleted? I loved that part of the short story. Fourth: The final battle between Ryne and Lan deserved more attention. Naming the forms,(another brilliant innovation by Jordan) and giving some first person perspective would have added a lot. Yes, they are picky complaints, but I'm writing them as suggestions for improvement, not whinning. Speaking of which, would everyone get off of the subject of when WoT is going to conclude. It'll end when it needs to. Let the man tell his story. I hope someone is able to glean some meaning out of the thoughts I've written. In summary I'd say this book could be improved, but it was still a more than worthwhile read. Enjoy MhalkyChris
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: WOT = Waste Of Time Review: The WOT books have been stretched so thin, they only have one side. Former readers and fans slammed the prior three books so hard, that it registered an earthquake in Cali. Fact is, fans left the series due to the fact Jordan became so disillusioned and the publishers tried to squeeze to much money from the fan base. So what do they do? They "TRY" to bring back fans and win back new ones with a prequel book. Fact is, it did not work. The series have been so long and very drawn out, that readers lost interest many books ago. In fact, my copies can be found in some library collecting dust in the boxes they were given in. Jordan lost the fan base, and I don't imagine him ever getting them back. Avoid him and his books at all costs. Invest your money in another author or series and you will be that much richer.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Madness pure madness Review: A story should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. I think it was Aristotle who first noticed this over two thousand years ago. Jordan is not only putting the end of a ten book series aside to restart the beginning of it, he is also restarting a short story he began for a compendium a few years back. So, you get a new beginning to a ten book (plus) series that is in need of anything but a new beginning. And you don't even really get a new beginning because this prequel ends where the short story ends. So you get two hundred some new pages to restart the ending of a story you already read. It's really sort of funny when you think about how insane it has all become. If you want a new starting point for both a ten book series and a short story all wrapped into one, here it is. If you stop and think and realize that you know the end of the prequel because you read the short story and you really know the end of the prequels because you've already started the ten book series then you might assume, like I did, that this was really a waste of time. Bring on the conclusion, then, after we have digested the series play around with prequels all you want. There might be irony in the prequels if we saw how they foreshadow the conclusion of the series. But that would require the conclusion come first. There is a third category of readers I feel obligated to warn. If you have never touched these books and are thinking that perhaps the prequels are a good starting point, know that the series itself, all ten books of it - to date - has no ending. The author seems to be lost in his storyline. There was a beginning, there was a middle, there was a promise to end it all, and now, instead, there is a new beginning. This may be a giant object lesson that the Wheel of Time really is a wheel and will just keep rotating in circles for all time never ending or beginning. Perhaps you feel that is some sort of genius. After reading it all, I feel that it is horridly self-indulgent of the author. A book, even a series of books, should conclude the story line at some point. There should be conflict and resolution not delays and revisions.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Still Loving WOT Review: I read a few of the other reviews so I could get a feel for what was being said about this book, before I bought it. Though, of course (for me) there was no way I could NOT buy it, and in hardback even!! I love this series so much I have all of them so far in hardback but PLEASE!! Mr. Jordan, please give me the final book(s)!! Believe me, I'm a fan, but I gotta see the end some day, I might die before it happens at this rate. And then I can't will the entire set to my son...do you want that on your conscience?? (just joking there...) Good book, a little short but what the heck, I liked the fill-in and additional story. I like prequels but would prefer them after the conclusion of the story. In fact, if I read right, and I need to check this, more prequels would be pretty cool. But can't we conclude the other first?? Pretty Please?? Thank you...
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: New Spring...there is nothing new about it! Review: A presequel for the ongoing series of "Wheel of Time". After alittle on-line research, at least, 2 more presequels are due between conclusion of WOT series (estimating ~ 3 more books) Robert Jordan is averaging 2 years a book. Guess, there are ten more years to go. Really! My suggestion is to borrow it from the library like I did.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good, But.... Review: Right up front--I would rather be reading the next book in the series instead of a prequel. Any day of the week. And although I love the Wheel of Time, I feel it's time to wrap this story up. Prequels would be a great way to go to give fans more AFTER the series wraps up.... But that aside, New Spring was a good read. I didn't feel like I was reading a throw away book or anything. It did a good job of filling in some of the holes (and lord knows, there are plenty to fill!) and was an enjoyable read. And lacking ANY of the usual "This song was called so and so by the such and such but known as the other thing by these guys" or "He attacked using the Puppy Dog Growling which the other dudes refer to as Angry Cockatiel" it comes in at a reasonable length to provide a few days of fun escape. Bring on the next book, I say, but this was a nice Jordan fix until then.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: 15 years Jordan...finish it already!!! Review: The first Wheel of Time book was released 15 years ago, that's 1/4 of the average human lifespan. People who bought the first book as an adolescent teenager, are now grown adults with teenage children of their own. People who were sent to prison for multiple homicides have served out theie terms and been relased, only to find that they are not behind in their Robert Jordan reading list. What exactly is Jordan thinking? DRagging this series out far, far beyond human endurance, and nearly lifespan, and now he releases a PREQUEL, before the actual series is finished????? Jordan started out realeasing a WOT book every year, and that's not unreasonable for a trilogy, but for a series of 10+ (nobody knows how many it will be), that's simply not ok. Even worse though, it started to stretch out to 2 years between books, and now even 3 years in some cases. This is insane. Years ago, fed up with what I call the "trickling trilogy" publishing method, I decided I would never again read a book in a series that wasn't actually COMPLETED. Jordan reminds me of why every time I think about it. Well, I'm done. I'm done with Jordan, I'm done with the WOT, just sick and tired of this whole series. The books have groud to a halt, the publishing has ground to a halt, I suspect Jordan himself has been deceased for a while and TOR publishing is hiding that fact. Let me pose this hypothetical question to readers and publishers alike: Knowing that a series is unfinished, and no set date for finishing or even number of books exists, what possible motivation would someone have to begin reading it? I feel like someone owes me my money back.
Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: If you're new to the series.... Review: "The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow. Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time." Robert Jordan's epic "Wheel of Time" series brings you into world of swords and magic, legends and prophecies come to life. This book is a neccesity to learn the full story of the Wheel of Time, and the series is perfect for any fantasy book reader. But if one were to start reading from the first "Wheel of Time" book, they would be tossed into this world without an ounce of knowledge of the situation. Thats where New Spring: the Novel comes in. New Spring is the prequal to the "Wheel of Time" series. It tells the story of two young women and their path to the rank of an Aes Sedai, female weilders of a powerful magic called saidar. Durring this training they end up being tied into a prophecy brought to life, the birth of a boy child- the Dragon reborn- that is fated to save the world from a powerful evil, yet end up in insanity. Moraine and Siuan, the two women, end up in a search for this child, to find and raise him for his fate as the savior of the world. But many obstacles stand in the way of their search, others known as Darkfiends and the Black Ajah. The uncrowned king of a kingdom long destroyed, Lan, and his companions aid Moraine in her search (though ignorant of their cause). Most of the book carries on spectacularly borring, with brief points of excitement that come from small moments of action. The main focus of this book is to explain the events that occur after the child is reborn and the discovery of evil inside the White Tower of the Aes Sedai, leading to the outbreak of the Black Ajah. Up until the end of the book it's just flat out dull. Unless you plan to read the "Wheel of Time" series, this book would be a complete waste of time to read. If you do plan to read on, this book might be worth the time to learn the situation taking place in the series. --- This is the first book i've read relating to the WoT series, I've just started reading Eye of the World, so I'm speaking without knowledge of the full series, and intend this review for new readers like me!
