Summary: Intrigue, Depth, Mystery, Kingmaking!......and Magic..?
Review: I haven't read Martin since his Haviland Tuf series, and thought he only wrote SF. Being a fan of both genres, I was more than pleasantly suprised to find 'A Game of Thrones' which has apparently been released for some time now. Creating such a rich and action packed novel makes this a great read and very hard to put down. The threads that started in this book will not be woven for a while, which makes the for even more anticipation. What about the Dragons? What about Winter? Will there be a King of the North? I look forward to more...

Summary: one of the best fantasy books ever written
Review: I had almost given up on fantasy as a genre because so few authors can break out of the mold established by Tolkien, etc. "A Game of Thrones" is easily the best fantasy novel written in the last decade;much more imaginative than Robert Jordan's works, for example, and better written than Raymond Feist's. The plot is concise and believable, yet full of surprises; the characters complex yet convincing; dialogue is crisp, the action sequences absorbing, and the "background story" or mythos underlying the fantastic world is coherent. "A Game of Thrones" is one of the few fantasy novels that probably should not be stocked under the "Sci-Fi/Fantasy" section, since it transcends genre and should attract a wide audience. If you read no other fantasy book in the 1990s, skip Jordan, skip Modesitt, skip Donaldson-- READ THIS ONE.

Summary: Fast Reading, Couldn't put it down
Review: I have gotten through all of Jordan's Wheel of Time series and loved it but...this book surpasses Jordan. I knew it would be good but I was not prepared for the thrill and speed that I devoured this book Read it!! Everyone!!

Summary: Eines der innovativsten Fantasy- Bücher der Neuzeit
Review: A game of thrones (in germany called: "Die Herren von Winterfell and Das Erbe von Winterfell. A two- book- realease)ist eines der besten Fantasy Bücher, das ich in letzter Zeit gelesen habe. In der Qualität nur noch mit Tad Williams vergleichbar. Die Charakteresierung ist fantastisch und die Handlung ungemein spannend. Kein Tolkien- Epigon, sondern ein wirklich phantasievolles und eigenständiges Werk. Hervorragend !!!

Summary: More than Outstanding
Review: A Game of Thrones is the premier fantasy novel of the post-Tolkien era. Expounding the Tolkien view of the use of magic in the text -- namely that less is more -- and painting the complex relationships that underlie the various rivalries and factions in the text, Martin has created a believable world that is fascinating and engaging. The only problem is the long wait between the first and second volumes of what will likely be a four or five-book series.

Summary: All you could ask for!
Review: I tore through this book. I read it 2 1/2 days simply to see what happened to the charactors. It earned Jordan's praise.

Summary: This is truely brilliant writing!
Review: A great read!! Some of the best reading I've done in a long time. Takes you in depth to the realm of political power behind the throne of a king and his noble subjects. I just can't put into words the brilliance of this work.

Summary: Wonderful. Biggest disappointment is that sequel is not out
Review: Really an exciting and riveting book. I love books by Raymond Feist, Robert Jordan, and the like. This book was recommended to me at Kepler's Bookstore in Palo Alto, just a little note on the shelf, like at a wine store. The heroes were believable, the villains were not hopeless fiends, well maybe one or two were over the top. Very enjoyable and I look forward to April 1999 when the sequel is rumored to come out.

Summary: Fantasy, mixed with political and machiavellistic insights
Review: At last, a different approach in Fantasy!!!!

Most fantasy is characterized by a main figure that meets friends, they split up and each has its own adventure. That is the way that fantasy is written in books of 500 or more pages. It seems to be a race of who writes the thickes volumes, no matter the content. Characters are flat, do not evolve, good guys are good, bad is bad. Eddings is a good example of creating such boaring characters. This story is something completely different. Its changing perspective is a refreshing way of showing how people experience the dawning of a new era. Its full of intrigues and it shows a feeling of how political interests are evaluated.

In the reviews I saw many comparisons with Robert Jordan. Although I appreciate Jordan's epic Wheel of Time, this book is of another level. This is absolutely the best I have read in years when it comes to fantasy. I'm looking forward to the next episode!!
