Summary: An all-time classic
Review: I don't want to drag on, so I'll just say this. This book is the greatest which I have ever read and it bodes extremely well for the sequel. 'A game of thrones' is a rollercoaster ride of excitement and intrigue. George Martin, I salute you.

Summary: When this is over, I will miss these noble characters.
Review: At first the switching of charcters at each chapter is a little fraustrating, but by the fourth chapter the intrige has pulled you in. The setting is close enough to the our own medeviel history to be believable but has enough fantasy, like prehistoric wolves and zombies, to make things interesting. The characters are charismatica. Some are noble and courageous. Others are unlikable at first but grow on you quickly. You're never quite sure who the good guys are, who is the bad, and even the ugly are unpredictable. I'm looking forward to reading the "Clash of Crowns", but I know when this epic reaches it final page, I gonna miss these people.

Summary: A True Treasure
Review: I made the mistake of starting to read this Martin's 'A Game of Thrones' right before my finals, at ITT Tech. It cost me close to a grade level. This 'Thrones' entrapped me in it's magical way of developing characters and setting them onlong paths that many would leave less travelled. Martin mixes fantasy and human nature in a way that spellbound and enlighten me in the same breath.

Summary: Great writing , bleak story.
Review: The book IS bleak and depressing ,however well written. Objectively , very few good events take place in the story. The characters you can identify with seem to have, almost, only bad things happen to them. Maybe it is only setting things up for the future , but if you want something thats fun to read, and that buoys your spirits,DON'T READ THIS BOOK. If you want a story that holds your attention, has intensity, but at the same time brings down your ambient temperature of attitude and hope, read it!

Summary: DO NOT MISS READING THIS FANTASTIC BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: Book given to me by a friend. Did not know it was a series of books, this being number one, Clash of the Kings is the next one. Both are absolutely fantastic, non-stop action fantasy. Do not miss this one. The day Clash of Kings was released I was in the store buying it and 5 days later, finished it. Can't wait for the next one. Keep up the great work.

Summary: Finally, fantasy that delivers on both ends
Review: The usually fantasy drivel, with the exception of a few masters, usually leaves me empty, and giving up before the second installment is even out. THIS is another case entirely.

The most intriguing aspect is Martin's exploration of the dark side of the human soul. I'll refrain from calling it "evil" because Martin's characters would sooner slit my throat then be labelled so arbitrarily.

Black and white moralities are blurred beyond recognition. On nearly every page, honor duels with survival, and it is painfully clear that, in most cases, one must win and one must lose. There is no "win-win" here. As in life, principles come with a price, and those willing to live without them often profit at the expense of more honorable men.

And as an important aside, don't let my universal use of the word "men" throw you. Martin is more comfortable than most fantasy authors in allowing women (and children, for that matter) their rightful, and inevitable, place in, among and behind the seats of power.

I cheer Martin for bringing us a "true" photograph of the deceit and corruption that power inevitably brings. We read the headlines every day, depicting this gruesome murder or that, but rarely does a fantasy author delve into both the details and the overriding motives of these acts with such success. Thomas Covenant has nothing on these folks - the classic anti-hero is a knight in shining armor compared to most of the twisted souls inhabiting Martin's captivating world.

Don't pick it up unless you have the time not to put it down. As well-written as it is conceived.

Summary: one word -awesome-
Review: one word -awesome- , this is the awesomest book ive read so far in my life. i give this book 5 stars because it has surpassed even the wonderful world of J.R.R Tolkien. There is not much to say just that this is one book that should be treasured. ( but mebe he went a bit overboard with the brothels:)

Summary: Masterly story telling
Review: A magnificent and unique fantasy of epic proportions. In another time and place a summer of 10 years is coming to and end and winter is approaching. King Robert Barathon (the usurper) with the aid of his brother-in-law Jaime Lannister (the Kingslayer) has taken the throne of the seven kingdoms. After the demise of his "Hand" he asks his good friend Eddard Stark to be his new "hand" and sets the scene for murder, treachery and intrigue. With a plot which includes family rivalry, incest, political manoeuvring and the ever present threat of invasion from "wildings" with just a hint of magic and sorcery, this book opens new vistas in Fantasy writing. The cast includes cruel indulged children, dreamy eyed maidens, brave and heroic children, fierce warriors, a dwarf, noble knights and opportunistic miscreants. I have been an avid reader of Fantasy since first reading Tolkien's works in the early seventies and while I love stories involving elves, magic and battles between good and evil, I also loved this book. Martin should be compared to no one; he is a master storyteller with his own unique and very readable style. Be prepared, however, for a very large cast. I was suprised by Martin's disregard for his main characters who may be discarded once they have served his purpose. His heroes, like all of us, have their dark side and even some of the villains of the piece have some redeeming features. A thoroughly good read.
