Summary: Enthralling. One of the best books I've read.
Review: I was very impressed by A Game of Thrones (Song of Ice and Fire, Vol 1). I originally read it because I was given a mini book - an excerpt from this book - with the purchase of another title at my local bookstore.

For all true lovers of Fantasy Fiction, this is a feast. The intricacies of the interwoven plot lines astounds me. Each of the characters exhibits the nuance and attention to detail that really brings out their humanity to me. I empathise with every one of them.

It's a truly original masterpiece. I've been in suspense since I finished it, about 12 months ago, and I can't wait to read the next one!

Do yourself a favour and read it - NOW!

Summary: Outstanding Novel!!!!!!
Review: Once I read this novel all I could think about was when book #2 would come out!The characters were vivid and even though it was a "cast of thousands" it was easy to keep track of all the goings on. In my opinion this should sit on the shelf next to the Lord of the Rings. It had everything you could ask for;action, intrigue, wit. It is also a large novel(which I love) so it gives you a chance to cover all the bases and to get the scope of this wide ranging saga.

Summary: a real page turner.
Review: This is the best book that I have ever read. It was totally unpredictable. Unlike most books that have the same storyline, this book was unique. The villains aren't completely psycho or cruel. I've reread this book several times,

Summary: Epic fantasy at its best!
Review: After reading this book, I suggest you wait awhile before diving into something written by a different author, because you'll probably be dissapointed. This story is so good it ruins you for most other fantasies. Great characters. Realistic, brutally realized world. Knights in shinning (and sometimes not-so-shining) armor. Direwolves. Court intrigue. Direwolves. Ancient evil lurking just beyond the Wall. And Direwolves! Robert Jordan had better get his act together as he writes his next book if he wants to continue his reign as the current king of fantasy.

Summary: Verbose (but you could tell that by the size of the book!)
Review: I'm not a big fan of books that have so many characters that you need a cross referenced geneology appendix in the back - but Martin managed to pull it off in this book. He created interesting, well-developed personalities that you really got to know and care about. Of course, with all of the character background and development there was little time to actually develop the plot - but I suppose that's why this is a series. If you like to really get into the characters of a book, and are willing to read 800 pages of what is basically an introduction, Martin has really started to create a wonderful tapestry of personalities and events.

Summary: Everything that Jordan ISN'T these days...
Review: For everyone out there who has been wishing that Robert Jordan would get his act together and start writing compelling fanasty again (instead of the 1500 pages of pointless drivel that was his last two books) this new series by George Martin will get you excited about epic fantasy again. I swore I would never get involved in another fantasy series again, but this one is more than worth it...

Summary: Did the negative reviewers actually read this book?
Review: Ok, first off: I really liked this book. One of the more engrossing books I've read since I first stumbled upon "The Riftwar Saga" about 8 years ago. I was a bit baffled by the use of the f-word, but it really didn't matter to me as Martin got the point across by using such blunt language. However, some people took great offense to this use of vulgarity and reviewed his book in a negative manner. After reading some of the more scathing reviews, I felt like asking those people if they were reviewing "A Game of Thrones" or books 4-8 from the "Wheel of Time" series! Don't let the timid sway you: read this book.

Summary: One of the Best Books I've ever read
Review: I am not a reviewer in the least but I really enjoy great books. This book held me in a trance, absolute page turner. The plot involves so many characters and events that to try and describe all in this little review area would be an injustice. All that I can say is that everyone who can read should read this book. The sequal is out now after, what feels like, a very long time. The plot just gets that much deeper. As I said I am not a reviewer but I had to try. This book is really awesome and deserves more praise then I can describe or give

Summary: Fantastic !!!!
Review: This is by far the best fantasy book i have ever read. From chap1 when the Others slayed the Night Watch brother, chap 2 the finding of the direwolves, this book grips you and won't let go. It is not like other fantasy book which starts very slowly and only peaks up at the last few chapters. The characters development is really good, the heroes are not perfect neither are the bad guys without any good points for e.g. Jaime Lannister's men will gladly die for him and even Tywin Lannister, for all his avarice, he is really a cool and excellent strategist. I love the intrigue, suspense and politics that are developed by George Martin especially when the seemingly evil guy may be the good guy and the helpful guy is actually the viper. Lord Eddard Stark is too honourable, too orthodox, he cannot play the Game of Throne (contrast with Tyrion In the Clash of Kings).

Finally, i think some of the readers comments about the book being too violent and sexual is not justified ! The sex scenes are not explicit and it made the book realistic while the violence mostly are done by the Dothrakis (who seemed to be modelled after Gengkhis Khan and the mongols). Again, it made the book more realistic and the violence part is again not explicit at all. Great book, wonderful stuffs !!!!

Summary: Long live King George!
Review: I have read some fantasy series and this ranks as one of the best. Only Tolkien and Cherryh are comparable. For those hooked on Jordan, Brooks, and the other derivatives this is the one you should be reading.

A Game of Thrones is a well written, gritty, real feeleng, diamond. It involves the reader while deftly sidestepping cliches of the genre. Yes, magic and dragons are here, but they are renderered subtly, believably and as something hard edged. The intrigue and warfare are brilliantly depicted. Best of all, there is no clear cut evil menace which must be destroyed. There are only various shades of grey, each with their own motives. Highly reccomended.
