Rating: Summary: A good begining to a hopefully good series Review: This was an extremely good begining to the series (ASoIaF) Good character development, etc.. all that stuff. Basically a fun read. Having read a lot of fantasy epics, I must say that this is a nice change from the good vs. evil books. Because here there is no good or evil. The author gives the "Bad Guys" in the book chapters to defend themselves. So you realize that power hungry Lannisters, aren't much different from Vengence seeking starks. Deffinatly a good read!! (Although despite what some say not all that different from Jordan....)
Rating: Summary: Dark Fantasy Review: I'm kind of finicky about giving five stars to every book as it seems everyone here does. However, this is an excellent book (although not the "best book I've ever read <multiple exclamation points...must be REALLY good>"). Tyrion alone was worth the price I paid for the book, although all the characters were just outstanding. You might hate them or love them, but you feel something for them. The weakest point of the book was "the annoying evil", as my husband and I refer to it. Okay, okay, I know this is a fantasy novel and there has to be a fantasy element, but it's the most boring part of the book. I was far more interested in all the political intrigue. Luckily, the evil has mostly lurked, although the third book is sure to feature it. But that's a really just a personal, minor point that in no way detracts from one of the better books to come along in many a year.
Rating: Summary: If you do not enjoy this book, fantasy is not for you!! Review: I just finished Martin's book 'A Game of Thrones' and am disappointed that the second book is not yet available in paperback! Martin shall quickly remind my other cherished fantasy authors what it is like to create a world rich in passion, intrique, hope, horror, plot twists, turns, and keep the pace moving. You are drawn to each character, good and bad, you laugh and cry along with them. So well did our author draw them with words! What will Jon discover beyond the wall? Will Arya survive her adventure? Will Robb wear the crown? Will Cercei and Jamie get what they deserve? Daenerys... ahh Daenerys!! If you do not enjoy this book, fantasy reading is not for you!!
Rating: Summary: Gruesome - but awesome Review: Waiting for Robert Jordan to get going - I got turned onto this book by reviews and it truly captured my complete attention. I could not put it down!! Martin weaves a great story with non-stop unexpected action, plots and twists. I haven;t read anything this good since the early works of Jordan and the Sword of Shinara (sp?) A must read for fantasy lovers - but a bit too gruesome for kids. Forewarned is forearmed.
Rating: Summary: Best fantasy in a long time.. Review: This is a superb novel. It is the type of fantasy I like: not too heavy on the magic, good amount of gore, and thick but not fluffed up on purpose. Also, I like the book design.. it's approx. the same length as Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind, but it is much more compact and durable. I just wish paperbacks would come out sooner, hardback is difficult for poor college students to afford.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book! Review: As hundred of reviewers have justly written before me, this an awesome book! Great in-depth characters, intricately woven plot with some very surprising twists. The author is not afraid to break the usual stereotypes of the genre and he weaves a wonderfully written story! A must read for lovers of fantasy (especially Tolkien fans and dissapointed fans of R.J.)! Read this book!
Rating: Summary: Oh......my........GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: I've promised myself never to give a book five stars, but this one is definitely worth the rating, as well as every one of the positive comments it has already received. I was given this book when it was first published, tore through it in one sitting, and then realized that I had to wait for the sequel! AAARRRRGH!!! However, the long wait was actually a blessing in disguise as I have had time to reread this masterpiece several times, picking up nuances of plot and character description that I had missed before. I'm going to use an already overtired analogy here, but I can't resist -- Martin's gourgeous prose weaves an incredibly complex tapestry of people and events which some may find a little difficult to keep straight, but I got used to it quickly. And yes, as some have commented, there are MANY threads left dangling at the end of the book, but to me the thrilling "non-conclusion" had the effect of making me almost unbearably eager for the sequel! I can't wait to read all of "A Song of Ice and Fire" and see what the finished tapestry looks like!!!
Rating: Summary: Great Read!!!! Review: I could not put this book down it is a great read with awesome characters! I recommend it to anyone who likes Robert Jordan as he used to be before the story stopped moving and we learned all about the characters clothes and cooking utensils.
Rating: Summary: excellent! Review: an excellent read. i thought it better than jordan, but maybe because of the disappointment of PoD. my only issue was that some of the principle characters seemed to make decisions contrary to expectations. e.g. catelyn taking the imp to her sister and ned stark's "confession". but, in fact, a hard book to put down ...
Rating: Summary: A Rival to Brooks or Jordan Review: This first book of A Song of Fire And Ice shattered all my preconcieved notions that I had grown so used to in other mainstream fantasy writers...Inspite of my expansive reading in this genre, I have yet to find a story by Salvatore, Brooks, Anthony, or even Robert Jordan's epic Wheel of time,(of which I have undying esteem) that has suprised me so much. Characters that seem to die and come back to life as credible plot twists, multiple antagonistic groups, subplots that are easy to grasp and yet myriad. I look forward to reading this story through to the end...I just hope it has a happy one.
