Summary: Those *#@% Lannisters!
Review: Them Lannisters really burn my hide! Sneaking, rotten, greedy, plotting, bastards! The Neverborn approach! Tyrion is the most enduring character in this novel. Anytime you combine a hunchback-cripple with a sardonic, bitter attitude, you've got a winning combination. The novel is so good, the last line makes you want to dash outside into the cold and snow and cry defiance to the frigid northern winds, THE KING IN THE NORTH! Read it today.

Summary: Absolutely Incredible!
Review: I'm afraid I'm going to have to sound redundant here and agree with so many others when I say that this is probably the BEST book I have read in a VERY long time (and I'm sorry, but I just cannot contain my enthusiasm about that)!! I admit that at first I was daunted by the incredible length of this novel, but I polished it off in exactly one week, and, considering the small print size, that was no small task. But I simply could not drag myself away. Never have I read a story that pulled me in so completely, that forced me to actually turn to the back of the book and read the family histories because I couldn't stand the thought of missing some important little tidbit. And there are so many characters, so many different viewpoints to see things through...I was thoroughly captivated. I'm still trying to decide which character I'm rooting for the most (Jon Snow, I think). And I know that I've really gotten into a book when I can read a part of it and say (to the world in general), "No, that was NOT suppo

Summary: I couldn't put it down. Deserves an 11(best ever)!
Review: What a fantastic book!!800+ pages of pure joy and even after that I still wanted more. A Game of Thrones has everything - politics, plots, subplots, conspiracy, treason, murder, betrayal, sex, violence, romance, heroes, villains, hatred, love, war, evil, religion, royalty, savages, wolves, swords, horses, talking crows, castles, dragons....read it, today. You will never forget it.

Summary: Abandon Hope all ye who enter!
Review: I purchased this for a good subway book. As such I was disappointed. Not that the book is bad- it is good. It was just so damn depressing. Sweaty, late August Manhattan rush hour mixed with betrayal and beheadings is grisly. I wanted a little hope and passion. I had to finish it to purge the emotional funk it was pulling me into. One moment did hint of hope for the Starks: THE KING IN THE NORTH!

Summary: Excellent!
Review: "A Game of Thrones" is a book of divided loyalties, honor, and deep intrigue (if you liked the Kelewan novels by Feist and Wurts, then this is the book for you). There is so much happening in this book that it would be pointless to try to summarize the plot in the space of a few lines, but suffice to say that every character has an important part to play, and even at over 600 pages, there is no wasted prose. Martin keeps everything moving at a brisk pace, which makes "Thrones" very hard to put down. Plan to stay up late for a few nights once you start reading it.

He also has a knack for getting inside the psyche of his main characters, which helps you bond with them. You'll even find yourself quietly wishing good fortune to some of the "bad guys." Sympathy for the Devil is not easy to achieve, but Martin pulls it off in a completely believable manner.

A Game of Thrones is a terrific novel, but I'm not ready to name Martin as the next J.R.R. Tolkien just yet. It's clear that Martin intends "A Game of Thrones" as the jumping off point to a much deeper work; it is a big book, with lots of interesting characters, plots, subplots, and enough foreshadowing to make me desperate to read the next book, but it lacks the wonder that made "The Hobbit" "literature" and not just "fantasy". Having said that, I will happily add that "Thrones" is the best fantasy novel I've read in the last five years, and would heartily recommend it to everyone.

Review: Great story. Could not put it down but didn't want to finish it. Where is the sequel?

Summary: Game of Thrones: Putting it all together
Review: This is the most exciting book I have read in a long time. The characters are very engaging, and each is unique without becoming a caricature. The sense of an entire world's history culminating in a fierce and dramatic confrontation in which the characters are well drawn and engaging is irresistable. I also love the way the landscape becomes such a real part of the story. The plains, the frozen Northern lands beyond the Wall, the fertile Southern valleys all become so real I could picture them. What else can I say? Martin brings together myth, adventure, fantasy, romance, just about everything that a great tale could possibly have. I eagerly await the sequel. It'll probably be the first hardbound book I buy new in years. I can't imagine waiting for the paperback version to find out what happens to the characters I have grown to care about.

Summary: Renew your faltering love of Fantasy here!
Review: I was getting tired of reading fantasy lately. All the stories seemed alike. Then along came "A Game of Thrones". Its been about a year since I read this book and I still can't stop singing its praises!!! I'm in anguish waiting for the sequel! The characters in this book are complex and extremely readable. One minute you like them, the next you can't stand them!!! They are all very human and incredibly interesting. The midget, the mother, the Princess... WOW!!!, and what about Jon??? Anyone who asks for me to recommend a fantasy book, this one is on the top of the list. Mr. Martin, congratulations on some stunning work! Keep it up and you've got a new fan in me! Take heed, winter is coming...

Summary: Argh! I can't believe I have to wait 6 months!
Review: This is a wicked, wicked book. Not only does it leave you just ITCHING for the next installment, it makes whatever book you read directly afterwards seem shallow and unfulfilling. Martin's characterizations are profound, his plotlines are intricate, and he manages to somehow make plot twists both totally surprising and perfectly logical.

At first, I was somewhat hesitant about giving this book my highest marks; it appeared to be falling into fantasy's most common pitfall. You know what I'm talking about -- the 'good guys' in fantasy tend to be shining and pristine, and the 'bad guys' are evil in every way. That's how it honestly looked for a while, but Martin soon pulled out of that particular nosedive. In the end, the book was more a tale of people fighting for their conflicting goals than outright good versus outright evil. (Other books which are exceptional in this respect are Guy Gavriel Kay's _Tigana_, where you never know who to root for, and of course Tad Williams' "Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn" series.)

I'm tempted to advise an interested reader to wait until the series is completed before they begin on the first book, but it's just so darn good you might as well just dive right in and subject yourself to a painful wait.
