Rating: Summary: A Great New Fantasy Review: I had a lot of trouble getting into this book; in fact, I put it down twice before actually readying it through. Once I did, I was hooked. This series of books, Game of Thrones being the first, is exceptional! Once I got through the first few chapters, I found myself completely invested in the characters and their stories. Martin's greatest achievement with this series of books is the characters -- they are three dimensional and highly developed, which is a rarity in fantasy fiction these days. Some have compared Martin to Robert Jordon and I think that's a good assessment. Martin shows the kind of character development and plot control of early Jordon books (pre Path of Daggers). Unlike Jordon, I can only hope he's able to maintain this control. I also hope that Martin can wrap this series up before it becomes too convoluted like the Wheel of Time series.
Rating: Summary: As good as it gets! Review: I love this book! Writing is superb, and the characters are even more than that. This book, in my opinion, is better than Tolkiens Lord of the Rings. Everything is just perfect here. There isn't too much descriptions or conversations, the story is very dynamic, things happen very quickly, but it's not hard to understand it, actually it's very easy. There is a lot of treachery, so you never know are the good characters good, and are the bad ones really bad. Oh, and you won't find chapters is this book. Since there are a lot of characters here (most of them die but new ones just keep coming), a different writing was required. When you start reading it you will feel that you're looking a movie, because the story every once in a while concentrates on a one character, for example you'll have ten to twenty pages about Ned, then ten to twenty pages of Daenerys, so you'll find about ten "chapters" for every character. Since there is a lot of killing and blood in this book I wouldn't recommend it to the youngest ones, but to anyone else it would be shame not to read it.
Rating: Summary: Amazing fantasy... without much fantasy! Review: This is a great book, one of the best fantasy books ever. The author is an amazing writer. He writes with such literary grace that I can't believe this is mainstream fantasy. The book also has very little magic in it. This story isn't about magic, it is about people, and the world they live in. Great book. Buy it but it buy it! Good book. Seriously.By the way, if you don't like realistic stuff don't buy it. Don't buy it if you expect a flowery world where the good guy always wins.
Rating: Summary: Break from the norm Review: This series is one of the truly unique,(not tolkein clones) fantasy novels in a long time. Excellent.
Rating: Summary: **Warning, this series contains sexualy explicit material** Review: There are several passages in Martin's series that are so graphic, they could not be published on this web site. What does that tell you? If you want to consume filth, save your money and watch some more television.
Rating: Summary: Why are you reading this? Review: One of the best epic fantasy books ever written! Why are you wasting time reading these reviews when you could be reading the book? Go get it and start reading right now...
Rating: Summary: It doesn't get better than this Review: Simply put go buy this book now it is the greatest fantasy book I have ever read. I've read all the other proclaimed greats: Tolkien (Excellent) Jordan(Good) Goodkind(Average) Brooks(Good) etc., but I swear to you this has to be up there with Lord of the Rings and Middle Earth. The detail and vastness of this series is incredible. If it weren't fiction it may have been a documentary on another land. In no way though is this series boring. It's everything a reader really wants in a book, action, intrigue, emotions that the reader can feel and a very good plot. Martin has beautifully weaved a masterful tale that can't really be described with words.I love this book. I'm a high school senior and I never used to read on my spare time. The first three books of this series got me to read, and now I love to read. That's how good Martin is. Buy this now you won't regret it, that I can guarantee. The only cons I can see about this book, if there are any, is some people like whimsical magic, etc. This doesn't have too much of that but it's still the best book series I have read to date. I've read 40 different sci-fi/fantasy books and most were of series and so far this is the greatest. Just buy it you will not be sorry.
Rating: Summary: George is good Review: Martin writes a very good fantasy novel. I have read a ton of fantasy and his writings are some of the better I have read. Very good.
Rating: Summary: Can i give this more than 5 stars? Review: Book 1 of A Song of Ice and Fire With all the heaps of praise already lavished on this book and the series as a whole, it seems almost silly for me to add my voice to everyone else's. The reason I am doing so is simply that the book is just that good. This is the first book of a proposed 6 book series (three have been published, book four is eventually on its way) and is a spectacular start to the series. George Martin is weaving several different stories to create a larger tapestry and only at the end will we see quite how everything pulls together. The largest story arc in this novel is that of the Starks. Lord Eddard Stark is Lord of Winterfell in the North. He is a personal friend of the King and he is an upright and moral man. He is called down to King's Landing (the capital city) to assist Robert Baratheon as the Hand of the King. We are introduced the Starks: Lady Catelyn (his wife), Robb (heir), Bran (son), Rickon (youngest son), Sansa (eldest daughter), Arya (daughter), and Jon Snow (illegitimate son). Even though this is already a large number of characters, each character is important and most of them get chapters from their own viewpoint. George Martin uses multiple narrators to tell the story. In Eddard's appointment as Hand, there is a lot of intrigue, some attempted murder, and action. The enemies of the Stark family are the Lannisters. While the Starks are presented as the protagonists and the heroes, the Lannisters are the villains, but as the novel goes by this is not quite as black and white as it first appears (and becomes less clear still as the series progresses). The wife of the King is a Lannister, and they seem to be behind a lot of the political intrigue surrounding the King. Tyrion Lannister, the deformed son, is perhaps the most interesting character of the series and I believe the most well-developed. He is easily my favorite character out of the many that are presented. If there is not enough ground to cover with the Starks and the Lannisters, we are also introduced to Daenerys, a scion of the former ruling family of the Seven Kingdoms (15 years before, Robert Baratheon led a coup to remove the previous King). She is in a land far to the East and along with her brother they are trying to find away to go back home and to take back their father's throne from the usurper. Eventually this will tie into the main conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters. This series (and even this book) is absolutely stunning in scope. It is a huge story and in this first book we are only feeling out the edges of what the true story is. There is incredible depth and the story is revealed from the viewpoints of many characters, some of them would not normally be considered a "good guy", and this only adds to the richness of Westeros. Simply put, this is one of the best fantasy series that I have read, and this is just the beginning of this deep, deep saga. Coming in at nearly 800 pages, I didn't want this book to end. To any fan of fantasy: I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Rating: Summary: The Best Modern Fantasy Book...Period Review: This book is undoubtedly the best I have ever read. It is full of rich detail and description, making the world and characters feel full and alive and above all...real. The characters are as human and vulnerable as I have ever encountered in fantasy literature, and Martin really has you caring about them as if you knew them in real life. Tyrion Lannister is one of the most brilliant characters I have ever read about, and throughout the book you build up a love of Eddard Stark and his family and friends (Like Hodor, a character who makes me laugh every time he speaks). Brilliant, realistic, brutal, emotionally charged and involving. I think even people who don't generally care for fantasy books would love this book.
