Rating: Summary: Halo First Strike Review: I loved Halo first Strike. My first reason would be that I'm a huge Halo fan. I also love the plots different twists and turns it takes. I also love how Eric portrayes the Master Chief. The Best and most exiting part of the book was when the Chief had to take the Covenant flagship and reach the Human armada before the Covenant. Before they obliterate the Human fleet. Eric Nylund did a fantastic job portraing the charactors and most importantly the conflict. The charactors were portrayed so good you could see the chief issueing the Marines orders. The coflict was so very vivid you could see the Human fleet all fire their heavy MAC guns at the Covenant armada only to see their shields shimmer then die out.
Rating: Summary: The Best Book in the Series So Far Review: Great book!!! I'm not a game player, but am a great fan of military SF (e.g., the Dorsai series by Gordon Dixon and the "In Death Ground" and "Shiva Option" by Weber/White) and this is one of the best. The Spartans are an obvious upgrade of the original "Starship Troopers" (Heinlein), but the stories are fantastic and "First Strike" is the best so far. It was great to see that the Spartans weren't totally wiped out at "The Fall of Reach". Given the Epilogue however, we need to find out where Dr. Halsey has gone and what the mysterious "SIII" is/are. Let's hope, given the plans of "The Prophet", they are enhanced Spartan IIs, and they are on-line...
Rating: Summary: Unfamiliar greatness Review: I know you read this a lot, but this is a great book for any Halo fan. I mean, it's one thing to immerse yourself in the game, a fun thing that is, but to immerse yourself in the story is great too. In this book Nylund is bridging the gap between Master Chief's defeat of the Covenant on Halo itself and the return to Earth that is Halo II. This book is not just about picking up fallen remnants of what happened previously, but it also takes new twists of its own. Other than the fact that this is a Halo book, it is just also a good little story to read and I recommended it. Oh, and don't forget to read the other two first.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: This book doesn't read as well as his other Halo novel "The Fall of Reach" but it is very good nonetheless. This is a must read for Halo gamers.
Rating: Summary: A must read for any Halo fans! Review: These books are very good. They give great depth to the whole Halo experience. They fill in parts of the story that the games don't and they give you a overwhelming feeling that you can relate to the characters plight given there situation. Plus slaughtering the aliens gives you a feeling that one man can make a difference even in the face of genocide.
Rating: Summary: Why do so many of you hate it? Review: I think it's a very good book. You have to read them in order though. Read The Fall of Reach first, then the first chapter of First Strike, play the game or read The Flood(I haven't read it), then finish First Strike. For any moms, hmmmm. There is some language, no girly stuff, and it's a great book I think.
Rating: Summary: Must Have For Halo Fans!!!!! Review: Wow, if your a true Halo fan you will really enjoy this novel. It's a must have for any Halo: Combat Evolved owner. And even the artiqulates out there will have a great time with the tons of action this book contains. Although I just want to type every detail I will let you do the reading. Hope this helps, have a great time, and enjoy!
Rating: Summary: Thinking Out of the Box Review: First Strike is the third novel in the Halo series, following The Flood. In the previous volume, the Master Chief and Cortana manage to set the Pillar of Autumn to blow her engines after she is taken by the Covenant forces. The explosion blew a sector out of the ringworld, knocking out most of the alien systems. Meanwhile the Helljumpers capture the Covenant command ship, but it is already overrun with Flood carrier and combat forms, so the marines crash the ship into Halo and take out all onboard. In this novel, the Master Chief and Cortana are lurking in the vicinity of Halo in a Longsword attack craft. They have repeatedly scanned the volume for other survivors, but none have been found. However, they do discover an oversized Covenant ship coming out of slipspace. Quickly powering down most systems to avoid detection, they discover that the Covenant flagship is using the same frequency bands as their equipment and Cortana manages to analyze the scattered returns sufficiently to register an object that they find to be a trio of cyropods. Using thrusters only, they maneuver the Longsword near the cyropods and the Master Chief goes EVA to bring them back inside. Two Covenant cruisers enter the vicinity and start to move toward them. However, a previously unnoticed Pelican drop ship hidden on an asteroid fires three missiles at the Covenanters and the cruisers turn to chase the Pelican. The Master Chief hustles the pods onboard and Cortana seals the hatch and fires their engines. As the Covenant ships lose the Pelican in the surrounding debris, the Master Chief takes the cruisers under fire and Cortana starts an evasion run. The Master Chief, Cortana and those on the Pelican are at large, but unable to escape, since neither craft has a Shaw-Fujikawa drive. In fact, the only slipspace capable vessels in the system are Covenant. The Master Chief starts making plans to take over the Covenant flagship. Meanwhile, in a flashback to the fall of Reach, it appears that the Covenant forces didn't glass the whole planet with plasma fire. The area occupied by the top secret ONI facility, Castlebase, was not hit from orbit, but Covenant ground forces were starting to dig their way into the underground facility. Several SPARTAN survivors from the orbital generator facility battle rally nearby, infiltrate the enemy, hijack two Wraith tanks, destroy the digging equipment, and then slip inside the base through another entrance. In this story, the Master Chief and a few other survivors from Halo return to Reach in the captured Covenant flagship. Cortana has gathered valuable information on Covenant weapons and slipspace technology. Moreover, she has determined that the local Covenant forces are gathering ships to attack Earth in the very near future. Somehow, they have to get all this critical data back to Earth as soon as possible. This story is typical of the series, in that a lot of 7.62mm ammo is expended to take out an unbelievable number of Covenant troops. How they carry all that ammo and other munitions is a puzzler. However, there is a semblance of a plot and a higher mission. Best of all, some of the characters that were thought to be lost with the fall of Reach are now discovered to be alive and shooting, but the list of MIAs and KIAs is still long. The story also displays aspects of Covenant society that were not mentioned in the previous books and gives more hints about the forerunners. However, this installment ends with humanity on the edge of destruction. The last scene hints of at least one more volume. Highly recommended for Halo fans and for anyone else who enjoys nonstop firefights with a variety of horrifying and powerful opponents.
Rating: Summary: Wow (I'm now stunned beyond words) Review: I love this book! I just got it and I finished it the first time through in a day. No kidding. This book is awesome and goes beyond what my words can describe. It holds your interest from page one to three hundred something-ish. It holds much more rich story detail than the advanced graphics of Xbox show. It also helps that the plot is wonderful. This book fills the gap between HALO and HALO 2 (due out this fall!) with a plot that covers everything from rejoice to massacre to treachery. Another bonus in this book is that it reaches back into Master Chief/John's life and explains what it was like to train as a SPARTAN. It's not as easy as it seemed. All in all, this book is a must have for any sci-fi fan who is even vaguely familar with the plot of HALO: Combat Evolved.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST HALO BOOK SINCE FALL OF REACH! Review: I have to admit it: I'm a Halo geek. I read the books, play the game on COM and XBOX, and even check game magazines if they mention it before I buy it. This book far exceeds The Flood. I love The Flood, but since I play and beat the game every day, I waited for this book since I beat it the day after I got it. It's the same author of The Fall of Reach, the prequel to the game. It takes place after you escape from Halo in your Longsword Fighter. There will be more survivors of Halo, more Covenent enemies, and there might be another Spartan that survived. I give this book 5 outta 5 stars. Read it. I guarantee you'll like it and make you read the first book all over again ;)
