Rating: Summary: Power to the women! Review: "The Journal of Callie Wade" is full of hope, sorrow, joy, and truth. Dawn Miller wrote a diary that reads fast - too fast. I didn't want the story to end. I wanted it to go on forever, to see how their lives lived out in their new homes. This book is another perfect example of what women endured while traveling to find new homes and lives. A strong and powerful message is conveyed. I recommend.

Rating: Summary: young pioneer woman describes experience of traveling west Review: Based on some true stories told to author by grandmother. Story is very believable.A young reader could relate to the young woman's heartache and certainly joyful experiences while crossing the country by covered wagon.
Rating: Summary: A young pioneer woman's diary. Review: I am 13 and I loved this book, even though it was meant for adults. The narrator, seventeen year old Callie Wade, really draws you into the story. Her voice rings true to the time and place of the story, the Overland Trail in the 1850s. You come to really care for the characters and find yourself wishing that all their hopes and dreams come true. I reccomend this for ages 13 and up.
Rating: Summary: entertaining Review: I enjoyed this novel. Very realistic feel to the language and format. A fast read, which is not deep, but entertaining.
Rating: Summary: A Story in Journal Format! Review: I enjoyed this story of a young woman's journey via wagon train from Missouri to California. It was well written and easy to read, however, I found myself wishing for a MAP and kept pulling out the modern day atlas to track their journey. I wished Ms. Miller had included a rough map of what the territories were like in the period in which this was written. It would have better emphasized the reading (like Nancy E. Turner did in These Is My Words : The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 Arizona Territories.)I was also a bit disappointed that the author did not write more in the style of the time period (as was so nicely done by Sandra Dallas in the Diary of Mattie Spencer). The author was a supposed collector of vintage diaries, but her writing did not show this well. Her wording was too modern and did not reflect how Callie really would have written. I did enjoy the book, but it is a romanticized story, not as realistic as other books I have ready. It didn't have the full grit that I was hoping to find. I've kept journals for more than 30 yrs, and this did not get personal enough. It is written like a novel, not a TRUE journal in which people keep their secrets. But if a reader likes a western romance, then this will suffice.

Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: I initially chose to read this book because of the pretty cover. I also love historical journal/diary form books. This seemed like a perfect pick for me. Boy, am I glad I chose it! This has become my favorite book of all time. I make a point to read it every two years. If I read it any sooner, I will remember everything and it won't be as exciting. Callie Wade is angry at her father for dragging her away from the house she loves, her best friend, and the life that she has known forever. Using a diary her mother gave her before she died, Callie records the perilous, and sometimes wonderful events of her wagon train ride west. She records illnesses on the train, including her young sister, Rose's. She also records her blossoming love for a mysterious blacksmith named Quinn. She must learn to deal with the dangers of wagon life, from dealing with death to dealing with a devilish preacher's son. Throughout it all, Callie's endurance and her love for Quinn and Rose is constant. This is a marvelous book. Warning to readers: Do not listen to reviewers beforehand who claim that this book is not very good because it is not accurate. If some minute detail isn't correct, the outstanding characters and the plot itself makes up for it. This is a charming book that will endear itself to your heart forever!
