Rating: Summary: The Hab Theory Review: I first read this book, aged 19, in 1976. It had a huge impact on me then & I talked about it for years. This year, I discovered it had been reprinted & I ordered a copy. It is better than I remembered & I'm taking in much more of the facts nowadays, in light of recent discoveries. I cannot put the book down. It is absolutely brilliant. Good science fiction, but also, amazing true life facts, previously unexplained, but all brought together in an amazingly well written, gripping and thought provoking book. An absolutely brilliant read.
Rating: Summary: HAB Review Revisted Review: I read this book many, many years ago, but the story had such an impact that I have discussed the premise of this book with countless people over the years. It is all too plausible & brings together many of the other mysteries discovered in archeological digs...and has a big message about what awaits us in the future. I can't tell you how thrilled I am to finally get a copy to read again and share with my friends. When my original copy was lost or thrown away, I never would have believed how it is the one fiction book that impacted me more than any other.
Rating: Summary: Incredibly bad edition Review: I was very disappointed with this book, in particular since I am a HUGE fan of Allan Eckert's series of books about the settlement of the American West (I've read and absolutely loved every one of them).... I am still surprised that there are so few reviews less than 5 stars. The basic premise of HAB Theory is scientifically very weak, and the dialog and action between characters is unrealistic. I also felt that the book seemed 'dated', and therefore has lost some of its energy over the years. Finally, what pushed me over the edge to give this book a bad review is the SHAMEFULLY BAD printing of the Backprint.com edition of the book. It is very distracting to have a new paragraph begin in the middle of a sentence! This editorial blunder occurs about every 10-15 pages, and is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the poor job of printing. If a reader decides to give this book a try, I suggest finding an out-of-print used copy.
Rating: Summary: Learning from your child - The HAB Theory Review: My son lent this book to me when I visited him after the birth of his first child in January. He made it clear it was an out-of-print and hard-to-come-by copy and I was to treat it with tender loving care. He called me a few days after I returned home and my words were that the book seemed to drag and I had a hard time getting into the story. When my son asked me where I was in the book, I answered, "the HAB theory guy just wound up in the hospital and the writer guy is starting to interview him." "Keep reading, mother," is all he said. I called him back a few days later, stunned with the knowledge of all the incredible facts which I was reading. I had only one question to ask my son, "Is this real?" So, here I am looking to ask the rest of you... are the facts really real?
Rating: Summary: The Hab Theory - When is this Going to Happen? Review: I've read this book from cover to cover. Several times I've gone back and read portions I was especially interested in. In every case, the feeling that I get is "when is this going to happen - it's way overdue now".Periodically, news events turn up which once more turn my attention to the premise of this book, and again I wonder - is now the time. This is just an exciting, riveting book, and I'm deleted to see it in reprint as I'm afraid my copy won't last much longer.
Rating: Summary: Impressive theory, hard to dismiss...and a great read Review: Being a geographist (spec. geophysical survey) I think I would have a hard time undermining this theory, even though a few of the scientific 'facts' are dated by now. I will keep a keen look out for anything which even remotely has anything to do with this subject. I'll spread 'the word' amongst my friends and fellow geographists/geologists. Suggest you read it and do the same.
Rating: Summary: unforgettable concepts Review: I read this book a long time ago. I don't know how I came by it or what happened to it. I forgot the author and have never read his other works. But what I cannot foget is the theory. It makes so much sense and ties together an incredible number of loose ends that exist all around us. If you can get ahold of a copy you are going to be dazzled. If not sell the copy to me.
Rating: Summary: I thought I was the only one! Review: I am completely BLOWN AWAY to see all the reviews for this book! I thought I was the only one who had ever heard of the HAB Theory, let alone been so affected and haunted by it's content. Now I see it seems to have a cult following and I'm not alone after all. I've also located a very good unofficial website devoted to the book and the science of the theories put forth. [...] Let the "HABBIES" of the world unite!
Rating: Summary: Thought provoking (I think)! Review: One of the few novels that grips your from start to finish - or in my case nearly the finish. I have a 1977 UK copy and at page 645 there is a major printing error as it then repeats pages 65 - 85 and then continues on from page 680! I am therefore somewhat frustrated that I cannot finish reading the best book I've nearly read in ages. I would dearly love this book to be reprinted so that I can finish the novel and then re-read it.
Rating: Summary: Back in print ! wooo hoooo Review: This is the finest sci fi I have ever read... or is it sci fi? Allen W. Eckertwrites what he know's about and study's.....could it happen? I recently e-mailed Allen Eckert and this was the response I got; 08/22/00 - 10:51 P To: Scott A. Smith Subj.: Re: Thank you __________________ Dear Mr. Smith, I very much appreciate the kind and generous remarks you've made about my writing and am delighted that my book, The HAB Theory made such an indelible impression upon you when you first read it some two decades ago. It has been out of print for many years now and copies have been extremely difficult to find and very expensive when -- and if -- located. However, I have some news now that may interest you. I'm pleased to tell you now that finally, after being out of print for more than 20 years, The HAB Theory is coming back into print and will be ready for shipment about the latter part of October. This book is being reprinted in what the publishers term a Trade Paperback edition. Unlike the usual mass market paperbacks, which are small and have small type, the Trade Paperback has the same dimensions as the original hardcover edition and has the same number of pages -- 566. Nothing has been abridged or omitted. The only difference, in fact, is that the new edition is soft-covered rather than hard.... If you wish to have me personally inscribe and autographed the book to you (or to someone else), I'll certainly be glad to do just that... Kindest regards, Allan W. Eckert
