Rating: Summary: She's turning into Jack Vance???? Review: I am a Tepper fan who started with The True Game - and have enjoyed the rest of her books. Imagine my joy when, picking up the Family Tree, it appears two of my favourite writers seem to be merging! The imaginativeness of her work has been augmented by the fantastical world and peoples of the future. And so like Jack Vance's worlds and peoples. If you enjoyed the future Earth, then I strongly recommend you investigate Jack's works here on Amazon.com.
Rating: Summary: Slow start, but worth it Review: I found the going slow at first and the narration by different characters somewhat confusing. I'm glad I stuck with it, because it was worth it. As someone else said, it reminded me of Ishmael in terms of being thought-provoking.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely charming! Review: The Family Tree is charming, thoughtful and rich in concept. It has been some time since a work of fiction has captured me so completely.Tepper's imagination gives her delightful, impossible, thoroughly believable characters depth and range. As a cautionary tale this book is as powerful as Daniel Quinn's Ishmael. As fantasy, It truly stands alone. A treat for the mind and soul indeed.
Rating: Summary: Just Incredible!! Another great book by Tepper! Review: A great story written by a great author. I couldn't put it down. One unbelieveable twist after another. READ THIS BOOK! When I was done, all I could think to say was, "This woman's insane!" A great author can make you re-think what you believe to be the norm and Sherri Tepper is a great author!
Rating: Summary: The best book ever, It has war, peace, love and action Review: The True Game draws you into a wonderful alternative world, or is it a future world. It twists it turns it entertains and for some reason I can never put it down. It is the only book that I have ever read more than twice. Even knowing what is around the corner in the plot doesnÕt take away any of the pleasure of reading the book. It starts following the life of one character then weaves so many characters in that you will need to read the books written for them as well. It is a tale of the endless quest between good and evil. If you look very carefully you may even learn something about human nature. It is a must read.
Rating: Summary: Another wonderful fantasy from a masterful writer. Review: I don't know how she did it but she absolutely blew my mind again, and she managed to do it at the same time the main character's mind is blown, so that you share the same emotions. In all of her works I've only read one which I didn't think was very good, the others have all been fabulous.
Rating: Summary: Restored my faith in Sheri S. Tepper
Review: I've been a fan of Tepper's for years, but after "Gibbon's Decline and Fall" I thought she might be losing her edge. Although that book had several good points, overall I was disappointed. But, willing to give her another chance after masterpieces like "Grass", "Shadow's End", and "Beauty", I picked up "The Family Tree". It was more than worth it. In this frequently astounding book, Tepper interweaves the contemporary with the mythical, skillfully bringing together two apparently disparate storylines into a single narrative that has the qualities of both. It's a testimony to Tepper's skill as a writer that she manages this with grace and such apparent ease, never losing her grasp of the plot or of her delightful cast of characters. If I have any criticism at all, it's that the climax, well, wasn't quite climactic enough. On the other hand, the denouement more than made up for this, though I'd seen a few elements of it coming. Tepper explores many of the same themes in "The Family Tree" as she did in "Gibbon's Decline and Fall". However, here she manages it far better, by discarding some of the more overtly feminist elements that, while valid, tended to distract the reader from the main storyline. This is a fine effort and one that should be read by anyone who appreciates excellent, unusual fantastic fiction.
Rating: Summary: An Amazing book, and not what you expect Review: This is simply the best book I've read thus far this year. An interesting story, combining elements of quest myths, science fiction and fantasy with compelling characters and some neat twists. If you're a fan of the fantastic (and even if youre not) read this one NOW!!! Highly recommended
Rating: Summary: What you may think, may not be what truly is... Review: Family Tree is an engrossing story of human nature, our anthropomorphic views, and our destiny. It is more than your basic science fiction or fantasy novel. Beginning on page 1, you are already deep into the story. Tepper does not wait for you to catch up, but continues on ahead as you hold on tight. The obviuos is not to be trusted in this book. Dig deep and enjoy...
Rating: Summary: So clever I was numb with admiration. Review: Tepper's trademark plot twist is letting the major characters--and readers--discover near the
end of a book that nothing is what it seems to be,
that there is a perfectly logical and unforeseen
explanation to the world she has taken you into,
but it's nothing like what you thought it was. This book delivers, and then some. Even better,
Tepper doesn't waste her brilliant surprises on
anything that isn't important and meaningful. She is clever about all the right things. I will be reading this book again just to appreciate in closer detail how wonderfully well written it is.
I gave it a less than perfect score, though, because it just isn't as compelling as some of
her earlier (pre BEAUTY) novels. I liked her
characters--but I wasn't in a state of urgency
to find out what would happen to them next.
