Rating: Summary: fun read, but a bit too mushy Review: Since I used to live in Alaska I thoroughly enjoyed the cold climate story-telling. That brought back memories. Being ex-military I could also relate to lots of the story. I liked the exciting pace, and was never bored. Some stretches were too Harlequin romance novel for me, though. I just rolled my eyes, skipped the couple of sappy lines here and there (and most of the epilogue) and moved on. All in all, it didn't spoil it for me, but I knocked a star off for it. A little hanky-panky is fine, but when we're moving to reunite families and crying over children and squeezing tears out all over the place, it's just too much for my taste.

Rating: Summary: Overkill in the Arctic Review: The author blasts his story through polar ice, sweeping squalls, Grendels (wait until you meet those beasts!), heartless Russians, not so innocent Americans, sub-marines, mad scientists, victimized Inuits, all at the Northern polar cap of our blue marble. Writings in Cyrillic and Inuktitut must urgently be deciphered, but the madness cannot be stopped. Many explosions later the ones who deserve to live, miraculously prevail. James Rollings has a sophisticated writing style and much knowledge about the animal kingdom due to being a veterinarian. The worst animals in his stories, however, seem to be the species human with a relentless "kill!"-gene, mostly each other. This is my third book by this author. I think the plotting of his stories is too raw, human values not blended in to make for satisfying reading. On a normal scale the adversities presented are not endurable, but overkill!
Rating: Summary: good, but not a ten! Review: This adventure/suspense novel really takes off and moves well in the early chapters. I felt it became bogged down a bit with repetitiousness once the characters were all 'assembled' at the ice station. But all in all, a good read, it just doesn't deserve a ten. I had hopes it was going to flow better...akin to the better novels by Doug Preston. Still, I will recommend it to my adventure readers at our library where I am the director.
Rating: Summary: A great adventure! Review: This book is all about non-stop action. It was a really fun read.
Rating: Summary: Ice Hunt: James Rollins vision of the USA as the great satan Review: This book is nothing but a complete disappointment. James Rollins makes a shameful portrayal of the US government as inclined towards secret human experimentation and ongoing abuse of it's citizens. Mr Rollins ends his amatuerish and unbelievable tale with, in his own words: "A partial list of historical abuses collated and copyrighted by the Health News Network" and proceeds to accuse the US government of numerous improprieties. I have really grown tired of people who seek nothing other than to degrade this great nation which has blessed it's citizens with more freedom, liberty and opportunity than any other country on earth. Left wing California writers [and hollywood moviemakers] roll out storyline after storyline with the US goverment as the mother of all evil; is this a juvenile attempt at furthering their failed political agenda or just a lack of creativity? I suspect a combination of both. In any case, this book ia a waste of your time & money. Well, perhaps fans of Michael Moorer would find some enjoyment in this novel.
Rating: Summary: Fairly dismal - Rollins writing for a movie, not the reader Review: This book is shockingly mediocre. After reading the hype here and in other book reviews I was exciting to read some hokey fun, a scratch that has been dying to be itched ever since Clive Cussler and the rest have lost their touch. In fact, I wouldn't even rate it next to Cussler. Consider it Cussler-lite. At least ol' Clive injects some spirit and humor (as absurd as it is) into his works, something Ice Hunt is sorely lacking. I thought I was reading an early treatment for a film screenplay. There are way too many characters, all are so bland and indistinguishable that Rollins has to lay out their positions with a little index in the front of the book. The Grendels are rather uninteresting and unoriginal as far as monsters go. The combat is rendered clumsily and Rollins' refrains from giving us a concept of the enviroment...I'm always wondering where the bullets are coming from and in what direction when I read this book. It's almost as if Rollins is just letting the Director of Photography worry about such problems. Definitely not recommended. I give it 2 stars instead of just 1 because the cover art is cool and dorky in a 50's sci-fi way.
Rating: Summary: Excellent book! I wished I lived up North! Review: This book was excellent! This was my first book by Mr. Rollins, and I must say I was impressed. The story, characters, and plot are woven into each other very nicely. I did think the book had too many characters, but that I just 0.02. Although I did appreciate the character list, and the visuals at the front of the book. I thought the book was original, and well developed. The only thing I didn't like was the book cover and the title of the book. The title didn't seem to fit the story. The cover art didn't look like it was finished.
Rating: Summary: A little boring toward the end, not my favorite Review: This book was ok, not my favorite Rollins at all. In this one the writing wasn't as annoying as it was in Amazonia, not the kind of repetitive dialogue there was in his last paperback.
Ice Hunt is a thriller that is typical Rollins. And adventure mission, a secret, and of course impossible ferocious man eating beasts thrown in. I really liked Subterranean and Excavation but this one really dragged on. The first third of the book was really good, but after awhile I got tierd of ending each chapter with "His time was running out" and "all went dark" and "He knew he would die". That and "The russians are coming! The Russians are coming!" just seriously all the time.
If this is going to be your first Rollins book, I recommend 'Subterranean' and 'Excavtion' first! It will give you a chance to give him a chance :)
