Summary: The Citadel
Review: This book starts off slow but will pick up after the first few pages. You will meet a young doctor who is off to his first job fresh out of college. He is ecited to be able to work for the first time but also seems nervious. When he arrives at the home of doctor page he is met at the door by mrs page. she is described as a mid aged woman that is a little plump. To me she comes off with an attitude that she is better than everyone else. Andrew askes to meet doctor page who has recently sufferd from a stroke and is in bad shape. Andrew knows that it is not likely that he will ever recover. The drama starts soon enough for andrew. he sees his first cases and is stumped about what they are and why they are sick. As you read this book you will meet one of doctor andrews freinds his name is denny. The make up there mind on what they are goin to do about all the illnesses stricking the town. They narrow it down to the sewer system is leaking in the drinking wells. The plan denny comes up with is to blow the sewer up. They do and do get a new one. The town seems to get no medicl help from any one else around. The local doctors are on there own.
Mrs. page is a whole story own her own she comes off to be a mean bully to ever one who works for her. You will find out that in the book she trys to rip off andrew of his pay. He stands up to her she does not like this at all. But he does do it and she doesnt seem to give him much more trouble after tht little incident. Andrew does fall in love in this story and that is one of the best parts about the book. He regrets some things that he does and it all keeps you wanting to read more. I think that if you want to read just simply a good book then this is the one for you to read. It has it all action, heroism, and love at the componets of a great book.

Summary: Fictionalized Autobiography
Review: This fictionalized autobiography by Dr. Archibald Joseph Cronin, written in the 1930's, tells of the struggles of a young doctor. Financial difficulties and the desire to become successful, early in his career, push him to make tough ethical choices. Unfortunately, he doesn't always make the "right" choice and suffers greatly for it. Cronin has the gift of telling a gripping story that will hardly allow you to set the book down.

Summary: idealism, corruption and redemption
Review: this is a very well written book about a young doctor who fights for his ideals, succumbs to the material world and eventually after much suffering finds again his old ideals. The landscape and people are described in a realistic and poetical vein. One notices that the author is describing something he knows well. The book is kind of autobiographical.

Sometimes "The Citadel" in its preaching of high ideals looks dated. But the 30s were the time for ideologies, time that lasted, one could say, till the seventies. Though the book is somewhat predictable, it is great reading. It's really a moving story. It's better written than most of the books written nowadays when most of the writers seem to have forgotten how to tell a good story. Maybe if Cronin were a little less sentimental, this book would be one of the masterpieces of the XXth century, but on account of the powerful writing I give this book 4 stars.

Review: This is the best of A.J. Cronin. This book has the capability to move one and all. This is a powerful book which makes the reader pause at times and think about the meaning of life.

A must read for all. This book is guaranteed to change one's view of life and sure to affect everyone who reads it

Summary: You must read it!
Review: When my friend read this book, I thought from the title,'What kind of book is it going to be?' and the answer is that it was incredibly well written. Usually we just believe doctors, without any doubts but just we believe them. Yet after you read it, you'll think about that one more time. You also will learn the life from Andrew. How he degraded his life and how he took it back and you'll think about what is the real meaning of our lives.
