Rating: Summary: Please, tell me there's a sequel! Review: I have read many Janette Oke books, but this was, by far, the best. It means nothing to me about historical accuracy, but another reviewer was absolutely right when she said that it's a story about how racism and hatred can hurt innocent people. But God's love was shown beautifully through 2 women of different cultures. This book had more quality storyline than any previous books by the same author. The only down side was the book ended and I was left crying my eyes out! I would certainly hope that Janette Oke & T Davis Bunn will write a sequel!
Rating: Summary: Response to questions concerning "historical accuracy" Review: I have worked with Janette Oke for over 20 years and with T. Davis Bunn for 10, and I know firsthand of these authors' careful research and attention to historical details. The fact is that when the French first came to Acadia in the mid-17th century, French Huguenot settlements have been identified among them in the historical records. Some of these French Protestants settled in New York and beyond, including the area of Nova Scotia. The expulsion of the French a century later, the historical fiction setting of THE MEETING PLACE, has been cast even today as a religious conflict between the "Protestant British" and the "Catholic French," but such was not the case. The roots of the conflict were to be found half a world away between two European superpowers struggling for dominance in the New World. Whether there remained a French Protestant village on Cobiquid Bay at that time is not now known, but there may well have been.
Rating: Summary: Oke does it again, with Bunn's help! Review: I just finished this book and thoroughly enjoyed it! Oke and Bunn really made their characters "live" this time. Set in Acadia in the 1750's, the story revolves around the conflicts between the French and English. When a Frenchwoman and Englishwoman accidently meet in a meadow, they begin a tentative friendship which grows as they discover how much they have in common. As each one grows in her relationship with God, they become closer friends, and soon involve their families, which brings difficulties for all involved. The story was entertaining, of course, but also challenging; how is my relationship with God and with my friends? I'm already waiting (im)patiently for the sequel, due in early 2000!
Rating: Summary: Better view of my heritage Review: I live in French Canada. It also helped me understand part of my county's heritage. I hated history class and didn't listen much when stories of "l"Acadie" came up.This is a well written book. Wonderfull story, and thankyou very much for this setting, I felt for these fictional characters. I was very pleased to read the sequel "The Sacred Shore"

Rating: Summary: I was very disappointed at the historical inaccuracies Review: I love Janette Oke's writing and have read almost all of her work. In The Meeting Place I was very distracted by the liberties taken with history. The Acadian people were of one faith - they were staunch Roman Catholics. They were not Huguenots. For me the historical inaccuracies coloured what would otherwise be a warm, sensitive story of two women caught in a political battle that was not their own. The story is wonderful, I just expect more in the way of acurate research for historical fiction.
Rating: Summary: Awesome!!!! Review: I love this series! This is my favorite book out of this series! It is a really good book. Janete Oke is one of my favorite authors. You have got to read "The Meeting Place"!!!!
Rating: Summary: sequel information? Review: I loved the book. Please tell me when the sequel is due out. I can't wait. Thank you.
Rating: Summary: I agree, it's their best so far! Review: I loved the storyline, but I also was really drawn into the characters, and almost felt as if they were friends of mine. I identified deeply with the two ladies, and I felt their conflicts. I've read all of Janette Oke's books, and all of their combined efforts, and this one touched my heart the most.
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Book! Review: I think that this book is the best that Oke & Bunn have written so far. Especially as a young mother myself, I was drawn deeply into the lives of the young women in this story. It not only makes you think, but it makes you feel for these people, and it makes it feel as if it could have been you just as easily. I greatly look forward to the sequel!
